Abstract

An anti-pollution exhaust gas cleaning system in which a horizontal extension from the vertical stack is provided with a pair of spaced off-set filter baffles to produce a tortuous flow of the exhaust gases. A steam jet is provided for mingling steam with the exhaust gases upstream from the baffle. A drain system is provided beneath the horizontal portion of the pipe for draining off condensed steam water droplets containing solid particles entrained therein removed from the exhaust gases.

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to anti-pollution exhaust gas scrubbing systems.
2. Summary of the Invention An exhaust gas scrubbing system in which the exhaust gases are subjected to a steam spray and then passed over a tortuous path produced by off-set filter baffles overlying a drain system for draining off the condensed steam with entrained pollutant particles.
The primary object of the invention is to clean solid particles from exhaust gases to produce a non-polluting exhaust stream.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a front elevation of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the invention; and
FIG. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view, taken along the line 33 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral indicates generally an exhaust gas steam scrubbing system constructed in accordance with the invention.
The system 10 includes a stack 11 having an annular flange 12 formed on the upper end thereof. The stack 11 is connected to any system for conducting pollutant containing exhaust gases to the atmosphere.
An elbow 13 of tubular form is provided with an annular flange 14 detachably secured to the flange 12 by a plurality of bolts 15. The elbow 13 has a vertical por tion 16 leading upwardly from the flange l4 and a horizontal portion 17 having its axis generally perpendicularly to the axis of the vertical portion 16.
A solid baffle 18 is positioned in the base of the horizontal portion 17 adjacent the vertical portion 16 as can be seen in FIGS. 2 and 3. Drain ports 19 open through the bottom of the horizontal portion 17 and communicates with a manifold drain pipe 20 extending downwardly therefrom. The baffle 18 is upstream from the drain port 19 so as to prevent the flow of liquid back down in the stack 11.
A generally U-shaped baffle bracket 21 is rigidly secured in the horizontal portion 17 of the system 10 downstream from the solid baffle l8 and extending at an angle downwardly from the upper portion of the horizontal portion 17. A second generally U-shaped baffle bracket 22 is rigidly secured in the horizontal portion 17 downstream from the bracket 21, extending upwardly from the base of the horizontal portion 17 and arranged parallel and spaced from the bracket 21. A filter baffle 23 is mounted in the frame 24 and secured to each of the brackets 21, 22 in spaced parallel relation. The filter baffles 23 are of course material of a nature commonly used for filters.
A steam pipe 25 extends from a source of steam under pressure (not shown) and leads to a steam jet nozzle 26 arranged at the juncture of the vertical portion 16 and the horizontal portion 17 of the elbow 13. The steam jet nozzle 26 is arranged with its axis parallel to the axis of the horizontal portion 17 of the elbow 13 and above the upper edge of the baffle 18.
In the use and operation of the invention the stack 11 receives exhaust gases from a system such as a steam boiler with the exhaust gases containing polluting materials some of which are of a solid nature. Steam is mingled with the exhaust gases by passage through the steam pipes 25 and the steam nozzle 26 and the mingled exhaust gases and steam passes through the spaces over the baffle 18 under the baffle 23 supported by the baffle support 21 and over the baffle 23 supported by the baffle support 22. Some of the mingled gases will pass through the coarse filters 23.
The mingled gases on passing over the baffle l8 and around the baffles 23 will change direction and some condensation of the steam will take place. The condensing of the steam forms water droplets which en train a portion at least of the solid materials in the gas and this water with entrained solids flows downwardly to the drain ports 19 and out through the manifold pipe 20 to leave the system 10. The exhaust gases then pass to the atmosphere.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In an exhaust gas steam scrubbing system in combination with a stack for conducting pollutant containing exhaust gases, said stack being provided with an annular flange on the upper end thereof, a tubular elbow including a vertically disposed portion and a horizontally disposed portion that are arranged substantially at right angles with respect to each other, said elbow having an annular flange detachably secured to the flange on said stack. the vertical portion of said elbow leading upwardly from its flange. the horizontal portion of said elbow having its axis generally perpendicular to the axis of the vertical portion, a single solid baffle arranged to extend in an upwardly inclined relation from the base of the horizontal portion adjacent the vertical portion, a plurality of spaced apart drain ports opening through the bottom of the horizontal portion, a manifold drain pipe communicating with said drain ports and projecting downwardly therefrom, said baffle being positioned upsteam from the drain ports in order to prevent the flow of liquid back down in the stack, a generally U- shaped first baffle bracket rigidly affixed in the horizontal portion of the elbow downsteam from the baffle and projecting at an angle downwardly from the upper portion of the horizontal portion of the elbow, a second generally U-shaped bracket rigidly affixed in the horizontal portion of the elbow downstream from the first bracket and projecting upwardly from the base of the horizontal portion and positioned parallel and spaced from the first bracket, a filter baffle positioned in a frame and secured to each of said brackets, said filter baffles being arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other and extending towards the opposite portion but spaced therefrom. a steam pipe extending from a source of steam under pressure. a steam jet filter baffles and wherein the mingled gases on passing over the solid baffle and around the filter baffles change direction whereby some condensation of the steam takes place so that the condensing of the steam forms water droplets which entrain a portion at least of the solid materials in the gas, the water droplets with entrained solids flowing downwardly to the drain ports and out through the manifold pipe.

Claims (1)

1. In an exhaust gas steam scrubbing system in combination with a stack for conducting pollutant containing exhaust gases, said stack being provided with an annular flange on the upper end thereof, a tubular elbow including a vertically disposed portion and a horizontally disposed portion that are arranged substantially at right angles with respect to each other, said elbow having an annular flange detachably secured to the flange on said stack, the vertical portion of said elbow leading upwardly from its flange, the horizontal portion of said elbow having its axis generally perpendicular to the axis of the vertical portion, a single solid baffle arranged to extend in an upwardly inclined relation from the base of the horizontal portion adjacent the vertical portion, a plurality of spaced apart drain ports opening through the bottom of the horizontal portion, a manifold drain pipe communicating with said drain ports and projecting downwardly therefrom, said baffle being positioned upsteam from the drain ports in order to prevent the flow of liquid back down in the stack, a generally U-shaped first baffle bracket rigidly affixed in the horizontal portion of the elbow downsteam from the baffle and projecting at an angle downwardly from the upper portion of the horizontal portion of the elbow, a second generally U-shaped bracket rigidly affixed in the horizontal portion of the elbow downstream from the first bracket and projecting upwardly from the base of the horizontal portion and positioned parallel and spaced from the first bracket, a filter baffle positioned in a frame and secured to each of said brackets, said filter baffles being arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other and extending towards the opposite portion but spaced therefrom, a steam pipe extending from a source of steam under pressure, a steam jet nozzle operatively connected to said steam pipe and said steam jet nozzle being positioned at the juncture of the vertical portion and the horizontal portion of the elbow, and said steam jet nozzle being positioned with its axis parallel to the axis of the horizontal portion of the elbow and arranged above the upper edge of the solid baffle, and whereby steam is mingled with the eXhaust gases by passage through the steam pipe and the steam nozzle and the mingled exhaust gases and steam pass through the spaces over the solid baffle beyond the filter baffles, and wherein the mingled gases on passing over the solid baffle and around the filter baffles change direction whereby some condensation of the steam takes place so that the condensing of the steam forms water droplets which entrain a portion at least of the solid materials in the gas, the water droplets with entrained solids flowing downwardly to the drain ports and out through the manifold pipe.
