BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is known that in most looms the reed striking the pick is mounted on the end of an oscillating lever and is adapted to receive between its teeth the sheet of warp threads some of which are lifted and others lowered. In certain cases, this lever being relatively short the reed inclination attains substantial values in the rear position thereof, so that during its forward movement and in case the raised thread comprises a knot, this thread is caused to rise until it is located very close to the upper binding of the reed.
Now, in this position the knot cannot pass between the reed teeth without being torn and therefore without breaking the thread, since at this location the teeth cannot spread by their inherent flexibility.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a device of particularly simple design which is capable of avoiding this inconvenience.
This device consists of a section member of generally inverted trough configuration which is adapted to fit straddlewise on the upper binding of the reed, and at least one of the two wings or lips of which extends downwards to constitute a barrier located at a sufficient distance below the binding of said reed to cause a thread retained by a knot and therefore tending to move upwards to be stopped during this upward movement and retained at a level whereat the elasticity of the reed teeth is still sufficient to permit their divarication and consequently the unobstrusive passage of said knot without any damage to the thread.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the retaining lip of the device has an outflaring operative postion to avoid any risk of jamming a knot between this lip and the reed teeth.
On the other hand, the aforesaid pair of lips have either the same height or different heights in this last case it is possible, by simply fitting the device in one way or the other, to select the operative lip giving the best results.
Advantageously, this device is made from a relatively rigid material but having nevertheless an inherent resiliency sufficient to permit the fitting thereof by a simple clip-like action to the top, back or binding of a reed.
At the same time, this device may be used as a substitute for the wooden protection handle usually fitted on the binding.

configuration the central portion 1 of which has a pair of downwardly extending lateral extensions in the form of wings or lips 2, 3, respectively which, in the embodiment illustrated, have different lengths. Furthermore, these lips have lower rounded portion which are outflared at their ends as shown.
This device has a narrow entranceway for the central portion and is adapted to fit resiliently like a clip on the upper binding 4 of the loom reed 5.
In FIGS. 1 and 2 the woven fabric is designated by the reference numeral 6, the two sheets of warp threads are designated at 7 and 8 10, 11 are the heddles through which said sheets are caused to travel to provide the shed opening, and 7a designates one of the threads of the lifted sheet 7 which has a knot 9 formed therein which, by engaging the reed teeth, was caused to rise along these teeth so as to emerge from the plane containg the other threads of this sheet.
It is clear that the upward movement of this specific. thread 7a is limited by the engagement between the thread and the lip 2, thus preventing the knot 9 from attaining the level of the reed binding 4. Since the knot is still maintained in a reed portion whereat the teeth preserve a certain flexibility, said knot, during the forward movement of the reed, will spread said teeth and thus pass therethrough without any damage to the thread.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the long lip 2 is disposed ahead of the reed and occupies a position extending tangentially to the warp threads of the upper, but it is also possible, as shown in FIG. 3, to dispose the short lip 3, in this forward position by simply turning the device the other way, so that the operator may select between two levels for the operation of the device.
Finally, it will readily appear to those conversant with the art and as clearly apparent from the foregoing that this invention should not be construed as being strictly limited by the specific embodiment illustrated and described herein since various modifications may be brought thereto without departing from the basic principle of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
l. A device for use with the reed of a loom, the reed having an upper binding with depending teeth, the device being adapted to be fitted on the upper binding of the reed, said device comprising a body of inverted trough section having a central portion and downwardly extending opposite wings, said body being made of a material of adequate rigidity but having nevertheless an elasticity sufficient to permit fitting of the body on the reed binding by simple clipping action so that the wings straddle the reed on opposite sides thereof, at least one of said wings including a lower rounded portion which is outflared in a direction away from the central portion in such a position as to extend tangentially to warp threads of the upper sheet passing through the reed and at a level substantially below the upper binding and adjacent the teeth of the reed to constitute a barrier to stop a knot in a warp thread in upward movement thereof at a level adjacent the teeth 4 provide said clipping engagement of said body on the reed binding.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein both said lips have lower rounded outflared portions.

Claims (4)

1. A device for use with the reed of a loom, the reed having an upper binding with depending teeth, the device being adapted to be fitted on the upper binding of the reed, said device comprising a body of inverted trough section having a central portion and downwardly extending opposite wings, said body being made of a material of adequate rigidity but having nevertheless an elasticity sufficient to permit fitting of the body on the reed binding by simple clipping action so that the wings straddle the reed on opposite sides thereof, at least one of said wings including a lower rounded portion which is outflared in a direction away from the central portion in such a position as to extend tangentially to warp threads of the upper sheet passing through the reed and at a level substantially below the upper binding and adjacent the teeth of the reed to constitute a barrier to stop a knot in a warp thread in upward movement thereof at a level adjacent the teeth whereat the teeth can spread and permit passage of the knot therebetween without damage to the thread.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said wings have different lengths.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said wings define a narrow entranceway for said central portion to provide said clipping engagement of said body on the reed binding.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein both said lips have lower rounded outflared portions.
