Description
F. HEWITT.
Lamp Top. No. 38,826. Patented June 9.1863.
 umgmm- UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERIO HEWITT, OF NEWARK, NEWV JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAM P-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,826, dated June 9, 1863.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
 Be it known that I, FREDERIO HEWITT, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have-invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamptop, showing my improvementthereon atD D;
' and Figs. 2 and 3 show the separate parts of the lamp top having my improvement thereon I at O G and D D.
The same letters indicate like parts in all I the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in dispensin g with the screw-joint now used to connect the top or burner of the lamp to the main body of the lamp, and substituting in place thereof two wedge-shaped pieces or cams on one part and fittinginto correspondingwedges, cavities, or sockets on the other part, thus formin g the required joint in a more effective and simple manner than is now in use.
In the drawings, A is the top or burner. B is the top of the main body of the lamp, which is most generally made separate and soldered or fastened onto the body of the lamp. 0 C, Fig. 2, are wedges, cams, or projections forming a part of the top or burner of the lamp, substantially as shown. D D are sockets or cavities fitted to receive the parts 0 O, and form a part of the top or top piece of the lamp. These cams or wedges and their corresponding parts may be made separate and soldered to their places, or they maybe struck up or cast solid with the pieces of which they form a part. The shape, plan, and adjustment of the wedges O O and the sockets D D may be variously changed, adjusted, and modified,
Without, however, affecting the character of my said invention. For example, the sockets D D may be placed upon the part A, and O 0. upon the part B, or one socket and wedge only may be exchanged, and the form and shape varied to facilitate the process of manufacture.
The advantages of my said invention are as follows: First. Thescrewas nowemployedisa constant source of difficulty by becomingworn, and by the frequent crossing of the threads in in the act of adjustment, and when the parts are heated or expanded frequently become set and fastened together. All these disadvantages are obviated by my invention. Second. The parts as improved by me can be much more easily and quickly united and seperated than by the present method. Third. Being heavy and strong, and presenting broad surfaces of contact, they will be far more durable than the screw.
I do not claim the fastening of two pieces generally by means of wedge-shaped pieces or cams, as that has been done on other articles for instance, hose couplings; but
What I do claim as new and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
 1. The fastening together of the two specific parts of a lamp-via, the top or burner and the main body or fluid-receptacleby means of corresponding wed ged'shaped pieces, substantially as described.
 2. As new, the combination of the parts A, O O, B, and D D, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described, all being parts of a lamp, as herein set forth.
 DANIEL F. ToMPKINs,
WILLIAM WATTS.
