Description
G. P. LINDLEY.
LANTERN GLOBE.
No. 38,754. Patented June 2,1863.
QOOO OOOQ TQZne five afar 0 W, per My 44, I 7' I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. LIN DLEY, OF WATERBIIRY, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERN- GLOBES.
Specification forming part oi Letters Patent No. 38,754, dated J une 2, 1863.
.To all whom it may concern Be it-known that I, CHARLES P. LINDLEY', of Waterbury, New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in the Constructionbf Globes for Lanterns; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and
correct dec iption of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which.
Figu'e 1 is aview' of my improved globe for lanterns, when the same is provided with the opening and lip; Fig. 2, a view of the same when provided with. the opening, but
not the lip; Fig. 3, a view of the same when provided with the solid bottom'andair-holes; Fig. 4, a view of the globe and reflector combined, the-reflector being opened Fig. 5, a detached view of reflector; Fig. 6, a view showing my improved globe as combined with the base and top of an ordinary lantern.
- Like parts of the inventionare indicated by the same letters of reference in the drawings.
The nature of m y invention consists, first, in-' the construction of a globe of glass for lanterns,
which globe shall be provided with the opening a, for the purpose of allowing the lamp placed within said globe andvat the bottom of the lantern to be filled-,trimmed, andj regulated without the ne'cessity of removing the same from the lantern; second, in providing said opening a with the projecting"'lip.b,'for the purpose hereinafter shown; thir'd, incombining with a globe for lanterns provided with the opening a the reflector O, for the purpose or purposes hereinafter set forth; fourth, in
providing a globe for lanterns having an opening, as at-a, with'a solid bottom and the airholes, as fully described.
, To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will speak of its construction and operation.
A- shows an improved globe for lanterns,
- which globe, in process of manufacture, is providcd with the opening a. This opening a is,
insome cases, provided with the lip b, projecting outward, over which lip b the ring B, provided with the reflector O, fits snugly, and
in any ready manner.
B is a metallic ring, corresponding in size to the opening a in the globe, or made to fit snugly over the lip b. This ring B has hinged to it the reflector 0, made of metal -or any is held firmly in position by putty, cement, or
suitable material, metal being generally used.
D shows the bottom of an ordinary lantern,
within which the lamp d is placed, and E the top ofthe ordinary lantern, provided with the air-openings e.
In Fig. 3 a view of a globe provided with a solid bottom, D is shown, in which case the air-openingse may be inserted on the side or in the bottom D.
My improved globe for lanterns, being thus constructed, is inserted in. the bottom D of the lantern, and held there by means of putty or be opened and shut at pleasure, and, when closed, excludes the air from the flame within, but also as a reflector.
For railroad-cars, for the use of railroad conductors, employs, and all parties using lanterns my invention will be found particularly valuable, on account of the strong light thrown by it and the readiness with which the lamp can be attended to and the necessity of not removing it'from the lantern. In case of stormy or windy weather this latter consideration will be found .especiallyvaluable. While in the present instance I have shown a reflector of concave shape, I do not intend toconfine myself to it, as I am well aware that a convex, or even a plane, surface may be employed. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. Providing a lantern-globe with an open- .ing,-a, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the same,-the lip 11,
for the purpose described.
3. In combination with the globe provided with the opening a, the use or employment of the reflector O, or its eouivalent. for the purpose herein set forth.
CHARLES P. LINDLEY.
In presence of- '0. O. GORDON,
J. IAUGE.
