3 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures TWO POINTED NAIL ANI) HOLDER This invention relates generally to nails and hammers.
A principle object of the present invention is to provide an improved nail that is pointed at each opposite end so that both ends can be driven into two objects which are intended to be fastened together.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a holder that is designed specifically for holding the double pointed nail during a nail driving action.
Still another object is to provide a two pointed nail and holder which can be manufactured in any of different sizes so to be adaptable for fastening small or large objects together.
Still another object is to provide a two pointed nail and holder which can be used for fastening objects together such as, for example, mending a broken leg of a piece of furniture, by using the two pointed nail instead of a dowel in which no nail heads are visible, and the like. I
Further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the above and related objects, this invention may be embodied in the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, that the drawings are illustrative only, and that changes may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described within the scope of the appended claims.
FIG. I is a front perspective view of the hammer.
FIG. 2 is a side perspective view thereof.
FIG. 3 is a side view of the double pointed nail.
FIG. 4 is a side view of a modified design thereof which includes a split spreadable one end for secure anchoring after being driven.
Referring now to the drawing in detail. the reference numeral represents a two pointed nail and holder according to the present invention wherein there is a nail II and a holder I2 designed to grip the side of the nail while it is being hammered.
The nail II. as shown in FIG. 3 consists of a straight metal shank I3 made in any of various lengths and thicknesses and which at its opposite ends is tapered to a point 14 so to easily enter the material of objects being fastened together.
The holder 12 consists of a hammering implement that includes a handle 15 at one end and a hammer head 16 at its other end which includes a central opening I7 with a V-shaped groove I8 along its edge so that the side of the nail shank can be seated therein.
Within the opening 17 there is located a flexible spring steel band 19 which at one end 20 is firmly anchored within the hammer head, and the other end 21 of the band is extended into a lever 22 which is pivotally attached at one end to the hammerhead by means of a ball and socket joint 23 so that the lever can pivot, as indicated by arrow 24. The end 21 of the band is secured to a slide 25 slidablc along the lever.
In operative use. to drive one end of the nail into an object, the nail is seated in the V-groovc l8, and the band I9 is then pulled tightly around it by pulling the slide 25 along the lever 22. The lever is then pivoted toward the handle I5 as indicated by arrow 24 so that the band applies a still greater holding pressure against the side of the nail shank, and the lever is held together 2 with handle I5 ina per son'shand during a nail driving action. A j
It is to be noted that the increased tension on the band provided by pivoting the lever is caused by the hand first being passed through an opening 26 in the hammer head and then into the opening 27 extending diametrically through the ball 28 of joint 23, the ball being integral with the lever while the spherical socket 29 is a part of the hammerhead. Accordingly. when the lever is pivoted, the ball 28 rotates about its center causing the band at the ball circumference to be pulled sidewardly a short distance so that it is fitted in a short groove 30 upon the ball periphery. This short extra pull on the band provides the increased tension for gripping hard against the nail. It is further noted that the slide 25 can include means for being firmly locked on the shank after being pulled. such as by means of a panel on the slide engaging a toothed ratchet rack, along the lever, or by like gripping means.
The nail 31 shown in FIG. 4 can have either one or both pointed end 32 with an off-center split groove 33 so to form split tips 34 and 35 of different thickness and which will tend at different rate to spread apart as the nail is hammered by holder 12 into an object, so that the spread apart tips, when spread apart at a wide angle, thus firmly anchor the nail so it cannot come out. In a further modified design. one end of the shank can be of smaller diameter than the other remaining end thereof for specific applications, and these ends can be at an angle respective to each other and yet be driven by holder 12 if the shank axis between the driven point and holder grasp is straight.
Thus there is proved a two pointed nail and holder set that serves a useful purpose.
While certain novel features of this invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation can be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a two-pointed nail and holder set, the combination of a double-ended nail and a holder having means to grasp said nail about its middle while said nail is being driven at one end into an object; said nail comprising an elongated metal shank which is tapered at each end to a point at least one of said pointed ends having an off-center longitudinal split groove, thus forming a pair of split tips one of which is longer and thicker than the other split tip in order that they spread apart at different rates while being driven.
