Such windings as described above are often used in high pressure presses and similar machines so as to increase the effective strength of the elements being wound. The winding usually has an oval or circular contour, the former contour existing when the winding surrounds, for example, a press stand, and the latter when it is fitted around a cylindrical high pressure vessel, suggesting for example a cylinder within which is disposed a working piston.
The forces to be taken up by such windings are extremely great, and are proportional to the product of the prestressing of the winding material and the number of turns of the winding. As the prestressing is limited by the yield point of the winding material used, the number of turns of winding material will by necessity be large, i.e., each winding will be made up of a large number of radial layers, one disposed upon the other.
It will be understood that the turns in one layer of the winding would tend to be pressed down and between the turns in the winding layer immediately below, tending to force them apart. Such an occurance obviously lowers the efficiency of the overall winding. It has been found that, if the turns of the different layers cross one another or arebonded to turns in an adjacent layer, some stabilization is attained. However, the degree of stabilization obtained by this method is not extremely high, and it has been found that a small disturbance along a side of the winding may cause canting of the winding member.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of this invention to provide a device for mechanically stabilizing a multi-layered winding, the device being extremely effective in operation, meanwhile being simple in design and use.
Broadly stated, the invention is in combination with a member having a winding thereabout made up of a plurality of layers of a tensile-prestressed elongated winding member which runs generally continuously in the winding direction. The improvement comprises a plurality of support elements disposed between adjacent layers of winding and extending generally across the winding direction.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification and drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view, in section, showing a winding incorporating the invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view, partially in section, showing a winding incorporating a second embodiment of the invention; and
FIG. 3 is a perspective view, partially in section, showing a winding incorporating a third embodiment of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Shown in cross section is a winding which is made by winding flat rolled wire 1 about a member 6. The wire 1 making up the winding is a continuous single element which is wound about the member 6, the wire 1 being axially traversed along the member 6 to form each individual layer of winding. The wire is tensile-prestressed, and runs generally continuously in the winding direction. Rigidly attached to the wound member 6 on either side thereof are fastening elements (one shown at 5), being disposed on either side of the winding. Disposed between adjacent layers of the winding is a support element 2 in the form of a friction band, which runs generally across the winding direction. The ends of the support element 2 are fixed to the fastening elements 5.
These friction bands 2 may with advantage be spaced at substantially regular intervals in the winding direction, and may also be positioned in a manner such that all bands between adjacent layers of winding are positioned in different radial planes from the band between preceding adjacent layers of winding.
In this embodiment, the fastening elements 5 may be eliminated, and the position of each band 2 will be fixed by pressure exerted on that band by the uppermost of the pair of layers between which that friction band 2 is placed.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIG. 2, the fastening elements (one shown at 5) are substantially U-shaped in cross-section. Each fastening element 5 fixed thereto within the U-shaped cross-section at least one rod 3. Each support element or band 2 has loops formed at its ends, and each loop is disposed about a rod 3 as shown. Each loop defines an aperture, and is secured to a rod 3 by means of a bolt 4 disposed through the aperture in the loop and threadably engaged with a bore in the rod 3. This construction, it will be seen, insures extremely effective stabilization in the winding.
FIG. 3 shows yet another embodiment of the invention, wherein each of the support elements or bands 2 are joined together outwardly of the winding itself. The bands 2 actually take the form of a continuous element bent back and forth as the elements of the winding are applied. It will be seen that the fastening elements 5 in either form as shown are not needed in this embodiment.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a member having a winding thereabout made up of a plurality of layers of a tensile prestressed elongated winding member which runs generally continuously in the winding direction, the improvement which comprises a plurality of support elements disposed between adjacent layers of winding extending generally across the winding direction, wherein the support elements comprise bands spaced at substantially regular intervals in the winding direction, and wherein all bands between adjacent layers of winding are positioned in different radial planes from the bands between the next preceding adjacent layers of winding.
2. In combination with a member having a winding thereabout made up of a plurality of layers of a tensileprestressed elongated winding member which runs generally continuously in the winding direction, the improvement which comprises a plurality of support elements disposed between adjacent layers of winding exits ends, each loop being disposed about a rod. and means for securing each loop to its associated rod.
3. The combination of claim I further comprising fastening elements fixed relative to the member having the winding thereabout, on either side of the winding, the
ends of the bands being fixed to the fastening elements.

Claims (3)

1. In combination with a member having a winding thereabout made up of a plurality of layers of a tensile prestressed elongated winding member which runs generally continuously in the winding direction, the improvement which comprises a plurality of support elements disposed between adjacent layers of winding extending generally across the winding direction, wherein the support elements comprise bands spaced at substantially regular intervals in the winding direction, and wherein all bands between adjacent layers of winding are positioned in different radial planes from the bands between the next preceding adjacent layers of winding.
2. In combination with a member having a winding thereabout made up of a plurality of layers of a tensile-prestressed elongated winding member which runs generally continuously in the winding direction, the improvement which comprises a plurality of support elements disposed between adjacent layers of winding extending generally across the winding direction and which further comprises fastening elements fixed relative to the member having the winding thereabout on either side of said winding, each fastening element being substantially U-shaped in cross-section, and having a rod fixed thereto within the U-shaped cross-section, each support element having loops formed at its ends, each loop being disposed about a rod, and means for securing each loop to its associated rod.
3. The combination of claim 1 further comprising fastening elements fixed relative to the member having the winding thereabout, on either side of the winding, the ends of the bands being fixed to the fastening elements.
