Abstract

My sound reproducing device has sound transmitting means adapted to extend into the interior space of a loudspeaker diaphragm and be bonded to the latter. Said means extends to a sound receiving panel which latter is bonded to a support at a point adjacent a cut-out in said support, said panel being spaced from said diaphragm in position of use. Connecting cleats are connected to said loudspeaker and to said support.

1e erger 2,005,300 6/1935 Pfalzer 181/31 B 8 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures CT I SOUND REPRODUCING DEVICE My principal object is to improve the bass response of a loudspeaker by transmitting sound vibrations to a said panel of a larger area than that provided by the diaphragm of a loud speaker, and by spacing said sound receiving panel from said diaphragm to the degree that will attain the best results.
To accomplish this I provide cylindrical transmitting means that is connected to said speaker and to said receiving panel, preferably in the form of two tubular, conical members in telescopic engagement.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawing, nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my invention.

FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of my device, but omitting the loud speaker.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view otherwise similar to FIG. 1; but including a loud speaker.
FIG. 3 is a rear elevational view of my device omitting the loud speaker.
As illustrated, my device has transmitter means 10, which as shown, has a hollow, cylindrical transmitter member or tube 12 into which nests another similar member 14 of lesser circumference. Said members 12 and 14 are preferably of truncated conical-shape and may be made of styrene or other suitable material. For instance, said member 12 may be 2 /8 inches, overall width at its outer extremity and 1% inches deep. Said member 14 may be 2% inches overall width at its outer or free end extremity and 1 7/16 inches deep. However, these dimensions are illustrative only, as the size of said transmitter members 12 and 14 may vary greatly depending upon the sizes of the parts such as the diaphragm, the results desired and the space available.
A sound receiving panel 16 is connected to said transmitter means by bonding said member 14 to it, as by an adhesive. Grooves or channels 18 are formed in said panel 16, their size and depth being determined by circumstances such as the diameter of said panel 16. This panel is formed of well known material such as polystyrene. Good results are attained if it is at least twice the diameter of said diaphragm.
By bonding the transmitter member 14 to said panel 16, and the latter to a support 20, later referred to, it enables the attainment of a positive center alignment of said transmitter members 12 and 14, said sound receiving panel l6 and said support 20.
Said support 20 is rearwardly of said receiving panel 16 and the latter is adhesively united to the outer surface thereof. Said support may be made of wood or other firm material, and has a circular cut-out 22 intermediate its side extremities. Said panel 16 is positioned opposite said cut-out and is bonded to said support by an adhesive at a point adjacent the periphery of said cut-out.
My device is used with a well-known loudspeaker 26, which may be suspended as shown, or in any wellknown way. It has the usual truncated, concical-shaped diaphragm 28 and outer rim 30 to which the diaphragm is attached. Said transmitter member 12 extends into the interior space of said diaphragm and is centrally bonded to it as by an adhesive.
Said speaker diaphragm 28 is rearwardly of and spaced from said receiving panel 16, the space depending upon conditions and results desired. Ordinarily the minimum would be 1/8 inch and the maximum 1 inch.
Said speaker is preferably supported by cleats 32 that are fastened, as by screws 34, to said outer rim 30. Said cleats are also fastened by screws 36 to said support 20.
My device may be mounted in a cabinet and paper or cloth prints may be attached to and cover the surface of said panel 16, as shown at 38, thus a picture or print thereon may become part of the sound receiving panel.
Said panel 16 may vary in size and depth of grooves 18 according to the resident and physical requirements of the loud speaker used. For example, relatively deep grooving is preferred for short stroke speakers, while grooving of lesser depth is preferred to long stroke speakers.
What I claim is:
l. A sound reproducing device comprising a loud speaker embodying a diaphragm, a supporting member having a cut-out therethrough, said diaphragm being opposite said cut-out, connecting means connecting said diaphragm to said supporting member, a sound receiving panel opposite said cut-out, and sound transmitting tubular means attached to said diaphragm and to said panel.
2. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said tubular means having two tubes communicating with each other, the first said tube being attached to said diaphragm and the other said tube being attached to said panel.
3. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said panel having endless recesses therein opposite said cut-out.
4. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said panel being spaced from and of greater diameter than said diaphragm.
5. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 2, said sound transmitting tubes being of truncated conical shape and telescopically engaged.
6. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 2, said other sound transmitting tube extending into the interior of said first sound transmitting tube and being of lesser exterior diameter at its outer end extremity than the interior diameter of said first sound transmitting tube at its outer end extremity.
7. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim I, said sound transmitting tubes being respectively attached centrally to said diaphragm and to said receiving panel.
8. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said receiving panel being at least twice the diameter of said diaphragm.

Claims (8)

1. A sound reproducing device comprising a loud speaker embodying a diaphragm, a supporting member having a cut-out therethrough, said diaphragm being opposite said cut-out, connecting means connecting said diaphragm to said supporting member, a sound receiving panel opposite said cut-out, and sound transmitting tubular means attached to said diaphragm and to said panel.
2. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said tubular means having two tubes communicating with each other, the first said tube being attached to said diaphragm and the other said tube being attached to said panel.
3. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said panel having endless recesses therein opposite said cut-out.
4. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said panel being spaced from and of greater diameter than said diaphragm.
5. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 2, said sound transmitting tubes being of truncated conical shape and telescopically engaged.
6. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 2, said other sound transmitting tube extending into the interior of said first sound transmitting tube and being of lesser exterior diameter at its outer end extremity than the interior diameter of said first sound transmitting tube at its outer end extremity.
7. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said sound transmitting tubes being respectively attached centrally to said diaphragm and to said receiving panel.
8. A sound reproducing device as set forth in claim 1, said receiving panel being at least twice the diameter of said diaphragm.
