NUT-LOCK FOR VALVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,888, dated July 10, 1888.

To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLLLM H. Van Warn, of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Nut-Lock for Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
As well known in valves in which a compressible packing is employed between the gland or packing-nut and the valve-casing, through which the valve-stem passes, said packing frequently becomes so consolidated on and about the said packing-nut and valve-stem as to cause through the turning of the valve stem in one direction a corresponding rotation and unscrewing of the packingring; and the object of the present invention is to provide a device which will be adjustable and attach-' able on the valve-casing that will securely maintain the packing-nut against unloosening or unscrewing under the turning of the valvestem; and it consists in a construction and combination of parts which are capable of operation on and in relation to a valve, all substantially as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a valve having the device of the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a partial central sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a plan View of the paekingnutsecuring device detached from the valve. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the packing-nut-securing device of modified construction, to be hereinafter particularly referred to; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating a further modified construction.
The tubular neck B of the valve-casing A receives about and upon its exteriorly-screwthreaded end an apertured packiug-nut or gland, C, between the inner side of which and the end of the neck B of valve-casing a suitable compressible packing, D, is employed to form a steam-tightjoint.
Around aportion of the neck B, or some other suitable part of the valve, is disposed a strap, yoke, or ring, E, the ends of which nearly meet each other, and are provided with lugs or ear-pieces a a, through which a thumb or set screw, Z), passes in a manner to draw the ring to a more or less contracted circumference, and thereby to firmly bind it upon the valve-casing against rotation, said strap being provided with a rigid angular or outward extension, F, projecting in a plane coincident with that of the flat faces (I of the polygonal rim of the packing-nut C, and when the locking'device is in place any tendency of the packing-nut to rotate to unscrew will be prevented by its abutment against the projection F, held by the binding carrying-strap as one with the valve-casing. \Vhen desired to remove the packing-nut, the strap is freed from its bind upon the valvecasing by unloosening the screw 0, when it may freely turn thereon with the nut.
In valves of large size, where straps of necessarily heavy construction are employed, such as will not permit of a spring contraction, it is preferable to form such straps in two members hinged together, as at f, Fig. 4, whereby a certain and easy adjustment and attachment thereof maybe secured on the valve-casing, and, if desired, the set-screw-fastening eontrivance may consist in providing at one earpiece a of the contractingstrap a pivotal or swinging connection of the screw 1), as at h, and an open slot, as at k, in the other carpiece, a thumb-nut, b screwing on the outer end portion of the screw, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device for locking the packingnuts of valves, the same consisting of a strap or ring which is divided transversely, a screw for clamping the divided ends together, and a rigid lug which is permanently and rigidly attached to the body of said ring and extends therefrom at right angles to the plane of the latter, as shown and described, whereby the device is adapted to be clamped to the neck of a valve and adjusted around it to bring the rigid lug into parallelism with one of the lateral faces of the packing-hui,21hd thereby lock end, and the rigid lug F, permanently and rigit, as specified.
