FLORA POLLACK, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
GRATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,879, dated July 10, 1888.
Application filed April 24, 1888. Serial No. 271,757. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLORA POLLAOK, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Graters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in graters for reducing or comminuting various articles for food or consumption-as, for instance, stale bread, potatoes, horse-radish, c0- coanut, &c.having for its object to expe (lite and lessen the labor of the grating or reducing operation; and it consists of the combinations, of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved grater in position in its supporting bracket or frame. Figs. 2 and 3 are a longitudinal and a transverse seetion, respectively, of the grater removed from said bracket or frame; and Fig. iisa detail view of a portion of the said bracket or frame.
In carrying out my invention I employ a rotary cylindric grater, A, having a shaft, a, passing centrallythrongh it in the direction of its length, said shaft being supported and fastened in cross-pieces a, fastened to the edges of the open ends of the cylinder, which shaft projects beyond the cylinder.
13 is an open-bottomed can or hopper, which contains the grater A, and which is provided with a door, B, formed by hinging one side thereof at one edge, say, to the back of the can or hopper, while its opposite edge fits or abuts against one edge of the front of the can or hopper. The connection between the door 13 and the hopper or can B may be effected by the use of a movable or sliding rod, I), having its upper end adapted for convenient manipulation. It may be by forming thereon a ring or knob, while the rod bodily passes first through a tubular eye, Z), at the upper end of the can or hopper, then through a similar eye, b upon the door, and finally through a second eye, If, upon the can or hopper. By
withdrawing the rod 1) from the lower eye, I), of the hopper or can and the middle or door eye, If, the door can be readily swung open, the rod remaining and being held in the upper eye, Z), of the hopper or can.
The projecting ends of the cylinder or grater shaft (t rest one in an aperture, 0, in or bearing upon the rear or back of the hopper or can A,while N the other end is passed into and rests in a slotted aperture, 0, in the front side of the hopper or can,and is provided with a crank or handle, B", for rotating the cylinder or grater.
C is a feeder or follower, which is disposed in the can or hopper B above the cylinder or grater, being semi-cylimlric and having elougated slots (1 in its ends, which receive the shaft a beyond the grater or cylinder A and inside of the can or hopper. This feeder or follower is provided with a handle or rod, 0, to permit of pressure being exerted downward thereon in holding in place the substance asit is acted upon by the grater, and to effect the forcible feeding of the same as it is gradually reduced or ground away. By grasping and suitably manipulating the rodor handle 0 the followeror feeder G can be readily disposed in the can or hopper B or removed therefrom, as occasion may require.
D is a frame or bracket, whichis suitably secured in position at any convenientpoint, and has a follower, D,within which frame and between it and the follower is held the can or hopper D. The follower D has upon its front side,at the ends, cleats c e, as preferred means for effecting contact between the follower and the can or hopper and to aid in properly disposing the can or hopper in position.
In order to actuate the follower D, ascrew, E, is arranged to work in a nut, f, in the frame I), and applied to the follower D so as to carry it to and from the can or hopper in securing the latter in the frameD or in removing itthcrefrom. From the frame D depends, through the medium of an arm or bracket, g, a ring or circular frame, F,whiehreceives and supports a bowl or vessel to receive the reduced or comminuted substance as it falls from the grater or cylinder A. This invention 0hviates the direct application of the hand to the substance in holding it upon the grater or cylinder, the hand being applied to the rod or handle of the follower, which takes the place of the hand for the first-named purpose. The construction of this contrivance is such that it can be readily cleaned and all the adhering particles of the previously-grated substance removcd, thus avoiding the commixture of the too having an open lower end, the grater proper or cylinder, the cylinder-shaft supported in :5
said can or hopper and provided with a handle or crank, and the can or hopper door pro vided with an eye, with the movable or sliding rod passing through said eye and eyes upon the can or hopper, the screw-actuated follower 20 provided with holding-cleats, the supporting frame arm having the circular frame, and the semicircular follower or feeder provided with a rod or handle, substantially as set forth.
FLORA POLLAOK.
