PATRICK QUINN, OF CAMBRIDGEPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALE TO FREDERICK XV. BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
oasss roara.
PECIPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,725, dated July 10, 1888.
Application filed April 16, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK QUINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carnbridgeport, in the county of Middlcsex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress- Forms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures ofreference marked thereon, which Form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal and vertical section of the waist-form and ofthe upper portion of the skirt-frame of a (lressform provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal sec tion taken on line a w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the upper portion of the supporting-standard and the handle carrying the nut, which works on the screw cut thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in dress-forms made in sections, the skirt-frame being made of wirework and the waist-form of a material capable of being molded into shape-suc11 as paper-pulp, for instance; and my said improvements have reference more particularly to the devices for adjusting or expanding and contracting the dressform at its neck and waist portions, the said devices being operated independently of each other.
In carrying out my invention I arrange within the standard A, which is tubular and is supported on a foot so that it can be revolved horizontally thereon, a rod, B, sus pended by its head a from a bearing, b, in the upper part of a knob or handle, 0. Said handle is screw-threaded in its lower part to engage with the screw d, formed on the outer surface of the upper portion ofthe standard A. The thread of the screw dis. pitched to such an extent as to require but a few turns of the form to contract or to expand it to bringit to the required size. The rod B extends down- Serial No. 271,985. (No model.)
to receive a like number of slotted arms,i,piv-
otcd at e to a tul'mlar head, 7', movable on the standard and having means for clamping it thereto. Pins k, fixed in the forked end of the arms h, extend through the slots Z in said arms 2', shown. Fastened near each end of the arms i, and on each side thereof, there is a curved rail or bearer, hi, there being a pair of said rails or bearers to each arm i, and said rails each have a bearing in an eye, a, secured to and projecting from each of the ring sections D, of the form as represented.
The sections of the dress-form are sustained in position on the standard by arms o,pivoted to eyes asecured to the ring sections D and to 6 a tubular head, 1), having means for clamping it to the standard, as shown.
\Vithin the neck portion of the .form and arranged on the standard isa flanged slide,E, which has in its flange openings q, in which 73 are arranged rods r,pivotcd to a tubular slide,
8, arranged on the standard, and to eyes 25, secured to the neck portions of the waist-sections F, as shown. By applying the hand to the enlarged portion at of the sleeve E and 75 moving the same vertically on the standard, the size of the neck portion of the form will be varied, or increased or diminished, as may be desired, and by laying hold of the handle 0 with one hand and revolving the dress-form on its axis with the other the arms 1' will be moved by the pins k, acting within the slots 1 so as to turn them on their pivots zand cause the curved rails in, acting within the eyes a,
to either force the sections D apart from or draw them nearer to each other, as may be desired, tic-expand or contract the form, as circumstances may require. Thus it will be seen that the waist and skirt portions of the form can be varied in size without affecting the neck 0 portion, which can be varied at pleasure by moving the slide E on the standard, as described.
Having described my invention, what Iclaim in a dressform, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the tubular standard and the skirt-frame and waistform, made in sections connected together, as shown, said sections being sustained in position on the tubular standard, as described, of the tubular head 9, having the rigid arms h and supported on the standard by the rod B, connected to the said head 9, and arranged within the standard, and sustained in the handle O,which is adjustable in altitude on the standard by means of the screw connecting it therewith, the s otted arms 2', connected to the rigid arms 71, as shown, and jointed to the tubular head 9', clamped to the standard, said arms having the curved rails or bearers m to operate the eye a, secured to the ring-sections D, in such manner that when the head 9 and its arms h are raised on the standard by revolving the dress form in one direction the sections will be expanded and contracted on the form being revolvedin the opposite direction, all substantiall y as described and represented.
2. The combination ofthe tubular standard, screw-threaded at its upper part and provided with slotsff, as shown, the handle 0, having a female screw to connect with the screw d of n a i having prongs extending through the slotsf f 25 and connecting it with the head 9, provided With the rigid arms h, the slotted arms '5, con nected to the arms 7t and provided with the curved rails or bearers m, and pivoted to the head j, said head having means for clamping it to the standard, with the dress-form made in sections connected to the standard,as shown, and provided with eyes a, for connecting said sections to the bearers m, to admit of said sections being expanded or contracted by revolving the dress-form on its axis, all as described and represented.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK QUINN.
