QUICK-RELEASE MECHANISM FOR CLAMPING A TOOL ON A HUB BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In pending application Ser. No. 392,850 filed Aug. 30, 1973, there is disclosed a roughing brush that is mountedto a rotatable shaft to effect a roughing operation on the margin of a shoe upper during the rotation of the brush pursuant to the rotation of the shaft. The brush is removably mounted-to the shaft so that it can be replaced with a new brush when it is worn. The conventional commercial practice is to mount the brush to the shaft between a pair of flanges and to clamp the brush between the flanges by a nut threaded onto the shaft and bearing against one of the flanges, this general type of arrangement being shown in US. Pat. Nos. 1,404,339 and l,904,042. With this type of arrangement, the removal of the brush from the shaft is relatively time consuming and requires the use of a tool to loosen and tighten the nut on the shaft.
US. Pat. Nos. 2,251 ,470 and 2,983,531 Show mechanisms for releasably mounting a tool to a shaft wherein the tool is retained on the shaft by detents that are yieldably urged radially outwardly into positions to clamp the tool to the shaft and may be moved radially inwardly to release the tool from the shaft.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention is concerned with a releasable mechanism for clamping a tool to a shaft using radially movable detents that rigidly lock the tool to the shaft when in outer positions and are readily manually movable inwardly without the use of tools to enable the tool to be removed from the shaft.
In accordance with the invention, the tool is mounted on a hub between a back flange and a front flange, the front flange being removably mounted to the hub for forward-rearward movement. The detents are formed on fingers that are mounted to the hub for inward outward movement about first and second axes and that extend forwardly of the front flange. Toggle arms are pivoted to the fronts of the fingers for swinging movement about thirdand fourth axes, the toggle arms extending inwardly of the fingers. The inner ends of the toggle arms are pivoted to each other for swinging movement about a fifth axis.
With the toggle arms in a locking position, pursuant to a yieldable forward force applied by the front flange against the detents, the inner ends of the toggle arms bear against the front of the hub with the fifth axis located rearward of the straight line connecting the third and fourth axes and the front of the front flange bears against the detents, thus rigidly locking the tool in place between the flanges. When it is desired to remove the tool from the hub, the toggle arms are manually manipulated to move the fifth axis forward of the straight line connecting the third and fourth axes to cause the yieldable forward force to move the detents inwardly about the first and second axe's so that the front flange and the tool may be removed from the hub.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a partially sectional view of the tool and the clamping mechanism with the tool clamped to the hub;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. I with the section taken 90 from the section of FIG. 1; and
toggle arms shown, in phantom.
DESCRIPTIONOF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The left end of the mechanism, as seen in FIG. 1, is considered to be its front and the right end of the mechanism, as seen in this figure, is considered to be its back. Directions extending toward the front of the mechanism (right to left in FIG. I) will be designated as forward and directions extending toward the back of the mechanism (left to right in FIG. I) will be designated as rearward".
A hub 10 is rigidly connected to a'shaft 12, with a skirt 14, of larger diameter than the hub and the shaft, rigidly connected to and interposed between the hub and the shaft. Thehub includes a rear body portion 11 having a periphery of circular cross-section and a pro-. jection 16 extending forwardly of the body portion 11. The top and bottom peripheral portions 18 of the projection-l6, as seen in FIGS. 2 and 3, are in the form of parallel chords of the circledefined by-the periphery of the body portion 11. A prong 20 of the hub 10 is formed on and projects forwardly of the projection 16. 2
A pair of fingers 22 are pivoted on pins 24 that straddle clevises 26 in the projection 16 on opposite sides of the prong 20. The fingers 22 project forwardly ofthe A back flange 36 is mounted in the body portion II and is releasably held in abutting relationship with the skirt 14 by a resilient ring 38 that is retained in an annular groove 40 in the body portion II and that bears against the flange 36. A front flange '42 is mounted on the projection 16 for forward-rearward movement. A holder 43 of a roughing brush 44 having radially projecting bristles 46 is so mounted on the body portion 1] that the bristles 46 are clamped between the flanges 36 and 42; A pair of sockets 50 are so formed in the body portion 11 as to intersect the front of the body portion outwardly of the peripheral portions 18 of the projection 16. A compression spring 48 is mounted in each socket 50 with the fronts of the springs 48 bearing against the back of the front flange 42 so as to yieldably urge the front flange 42 forwardly against detents 52 on the fingers 22. The bristles 46 are so mounted to the holder 43 that the mass of bristles is resiliently compressed between the flanges 36 and 42 in the FIG. vl position so that the compressed mass of bristles augments the springs 48 in yieldably urging the front surface of the front flange 42 forwardly to bear against the detents 52.
With the tool holder in the FIG. I position, the toggle arms 30 incline inwardly and rearwardly with the inner ends of the toggle arms being yieldably urged rearwardly against the front of the prong 20 and with the axis of the pin 32 beinglocated rearwardly of the straight line extending between the axes of the pins 28. As a result, the yieldable forward urging of the front flange 42 against the detents 52 causes the fingers 22 to swing inwardly about the axes of the pins 24 to 7 thereby cause the toggle arms 30 to swing rearwardly about the axes of the pins 28 to thereby force the inner ends of the toggle arms 30 against the front of the prong 20. The brush 44 is thereby held clamped between flanges 36 and 42.
The tool assembly is incorporated in a roughing ma chine of the type shown in pending application Serial No. 392,850 filed August 30, l973 wherein the shaft I2 is caused to rotate so as to rotate the brush 44 and cause the bristles 46 to rough or abrade the margin of the upper of a shoe assembly.
When the brush 44 has to be removed and replaced due to wear of the bristles 46, the handles 34 are grasped and moved forwardly to move the toggle arms 30 forwardly about the axes of the pins 28 until the axis of the pin 32 is forward of the straight line extending between the axes of the pins 28. As a result, the yieldable forces provided by the springs 48 and the compressed mass of bristles 46 swings the fingers 22 in wardly about the axes of the pins 24 and causes the toggle arms 30 to swing forwardly of the axes of the pins 28 with the detents 52 moving inwardly of the inner peripheries of the front flange 42 and the brush holder 43', thus enabling the front flange 42 to be removed from the hub projection 16 and enabling the brush 44 to be removed from the hub body portion 11. A replacement brush 44 may then be mounted to the hub body portion 11, the front flange 42 may then be remounted on the hub projection 16, and the handles 34 may then be manipulated to move the toggle arms 30 and the fingers 22 to the FIG. lposition to clamp the replacement brush in position on the hub between flanges 36 and 42.
With the parts in the FIG. 1 position, the brush 44 is rigidly mounted to the hub 10 and is not inadvertantly loosened from the hub during the rotation of the hub and of the shaft 12 due to the inner ends of the toggle arms 30 being yieldably forced against the front of the prong with the axis of the pin 32 located rearward of the straight line extending between the axes of the pins 28. When it is desired to remove the brush 44 from the hub, it requires only a simple manual manipulation of the toggle arms without the use of any tools.
