BROOlVh-HEAD.
@PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,217, date-d dune 26, 1888.
Application filed October 3, 1987. Serial No. 251,33l. (Nemorlch) To all whom; it Hwy concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLI AM W. THOMP- s0N,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Guthrie Centre, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Broom- Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in broom-heads; and it consists in the detail construction, combination, and arrangementof the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set fortlnand particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a viewin perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is'a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view, and Fig. 4is a detail view.
The object of this invention is to provide a broom head or casting so constructed that the weight thereof shall be reduced to a minimum, and one combining durability and simplicity of parts; and the invention embodies improved means for suitably securing the broomstraw without the necessity of passing any screws or bolts through the same, and connection to secure the straw-between the securing-plates in such manner as to prevent the spreading thereof consequent upon constant usage.
Referring to the drawings, A reprcsesents the frame composed of two longitudinal bars, ca, connected at their ends by inclined bars a a and two outwardly-projecting arms,c a, having outer hooked ends, (6 a, forming U- shaped beveled recesses, as shown.
B B are two curved supporting-arms connected to or formed integral with the uppersurfaces of the outwardly-projecting arms a",said arms at theiropposite ends being connected to or formed with the vertical side bars of a handle-socket, 0, wherein is designed to be secured one end of the br0om-handle,as shown.
The above-described parts are all preferably formed or east integral.
D is a securing or clamp plate, also composed of two longitudinal bars, (1 cl, connected at their ends by inclined bars (1 d, the connection between the lower ends of the latter bars and the longitudinal bar (1 being circular, as shown, as is also the connection between the inclined bars and the longitudinal bar a of the frame A. The upper ends of the con neeting-bars d are shouldered at d", as shown, so as to fit snugly against theunder side of the projecting arms a.
E E are short blocks or wedges designed,in practice, to be forced between the upper ends of the connecting-bars d and the hooked ends of the arms a", said blocks being caused to enter the U-shaped recesses formed by said hooked ends.
F F are two corresponding nutted bolts passed through apertures formed in the cin cular ends of the opposite lower longitudinal liaise and d, and after being passed through said apertures of the securing-plate D the same are securely held in position by means of suitable nuts screwed thereon, and bearing against the outer surface of said clarnpplate, as shown.
In practice the broom-straw of the desired quantity is placed within the frame A and between the arms a, and the clamping-plate D is placed against the outer side thereof, and its upper end is forced between said arms a so as to cause the shouldered portions thereof, to bear against said arms, after which the blocks or wedges G are forced into the U- shapcd recesses of the hooked ends of said arms, causing the depression of the clampingplate, and the bolts F F are passed through their respective apertures and secured by means of nuts. From this it will be seen that the trouble of forcing the bolts through the straw is' obviated, and that the nutted bolts employed in my invention, in addition to securing the clamping-plate, serve to hold the broomstraw in its proper position as against spreading at the sides. It will be also observed that when the broom-straw becomes worn the same can be readily removed and fresh straw inserted, thus retaining the same broom-head and dispensing with the necessity of the replacement of an entire new broom.
I claim as my invention 1. The herein-described broom-head, comprising the frame, having the projecting arms provided with hooked ends, the clamping" plate, the nuttcd bolts, and the blocks or wedges, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the frame, of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in oriitgvarfily projecting itlnlia th; elempingd presence of two witnesses. pa e aving upper S1011 ere en s, an the nuttedbolts passed through apertures in VILLIAM THOMPSON 5 the outer ends of thelower longitudinal bars Witnesses:
of said frame and cialnping-plate, substan- F. M. HOPKINS, tially as shown and described. D. L. NEEDHAM.
