W. H. HEARD.
GARDEN PLOW.
No. 385,051. Patented June 26, 1888.
[22's Jib/neg N. PETERS. Fhom-Lilhu n mn Washington. D. c,
T NrTeD STATES ATENT FFfit WILLIAM HENRY HEARD, OF JACKSONVILLE, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO MARTIN JOSIAH MOHENRY, OF SAME PLACE.
GARDEN-PLOVV.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,051, dated June 26, 1888.
Application filed April 3, 1888. Serial No. 269,438. (No model.)
To alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatLWILLIAM HENRY HEARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at J acksonville, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garden-Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to garden-plows; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.
My invention is described as follows:
A are the handles and frame-work of the plow. B is a large wheel which is jonrnaled between said handles at their extreme front ends. 0 and D are cross-rods which hold the said handles firmly in position.
E is the foot-bar, and is welded or otherwise secured to the brace-rod F at the points f and f.
G is a grass-rod, which is rigidly secured by means of bolts or otherwise to the inside of the handles A at the points 9. The said grassrod is formed with two elbows, g, leaving a straight part about one-third as long as the distance is between the two handles. The bend or elbow part of said rod hangs downward, and the said foot-bar E is secured to the said grass-rod by means of an eyebolt, e, the said grass-rod Gr passing through the eye of the said eyebolt, and the said eyebolt passing through a perforation, e, in said foot-bar, said perforation being elongated at its front opening to receive the elongated part of said eyebolt, so that said grass-rod G may be drawn tightly against the face of said foot-bar, so that it cannot slip. The upper end of said foot-bar E is secured to the cross rod D by means of a hook-bolt, H, the hook end of which is turned over thesaid rod D, while theth readed end passes through a slot, h, in the upper end of the said foot-bar E, and a nut causes the said hook-bolt to press the said cross-rod D tightly against the foot-bar and keeps the same from slipping.
The construction of my plow above shown enables me to place my foot-bar and plowpoint immediately in rear of the wheel and on a line with it; or I may set it on either side of said wheel, as far out as the elbows g, on a line parallel with said wheel; or I may secure the upper end of said foot-bar to the center of said cross-bar D at the point 01, and throw the plow-point E far to the right or left of said wheel, as indicated by the dotted lines (2, (the sloth allowing for the difference in distance between the parallel and angular position of said foot-bar,) for the purpose of cutting into the sides of beds or any other like embankments of dirt, in which case I use a colter-plow point.
My plow is adapted to carry or use anyshaped plow-point on the foot-bar, or to attach at any time a rake, harrow, gangplow, cultivator, seed-drill, or any other like attach ment.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination of the handles A, wheel B, elbow grass-rod G, eyebolt e, securing said grass-rod adjustably to a foot-bar, elbowed foot-bar E, bearing on its lower end a plow point and having near its elbow the perfora' tion 6', elongated at its front end and having its upper end pivotally secured to the cross rod D, and brace-bar F, secured to foot-bar E, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses:
A. W. FILES, H. C. HINToN.
