IMPROVEMENT IN REGISTERS FOR HORSE-CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs B. ANGELL, of Coventry, in the county of Kent, in the State of Rhode Island, 85e., have invented a new and Improved Register for Horse-Gars 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters and numbers marked thereon, the same letters and numbers referring to the same parts in each gure.
Figure l is a plan of the step and platform, with the gates G, the rod Zt, and a part of the car, the machin ery being in part concealed under the platform A. The red lines show the gates when open for the admission or exit of passengers. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe mechanism under the platform A, with the lower part of that connected with the drums and bell. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the mechanism within the car, the machinery being protected and covered by the screens, the door q q q q being thrown open. My invention consists in the arrangement of certain machinery by which the number of full and half fares are registered as passengers enter and leave the cars, the conductor having control of the machinery which permits the passengers to enter and leave, and the proprietor only having' access to the registration at the close ofthe trip or day.
The construction and office of the several I parts are as follows: The step B to the platform A of the car is secured on its inner-side to a shaft, K, Fig. 2, which passes under the platform and enters the car, where are affixed to it the levers B R N. Attached to and on this shaft is placed the lever g g g, shown in Fig. 2 as formed of one straight and two curved rods uniting' at g', which extend transversely under the platform. At or near g this lever is brought in contact with the lever h, and has at its end a tooth or projection, t, (see Fig. 7,) which, striking against the cam S, prevents the step B from turning. The cam S is attached to the under side of the rocking shaft It, Fig. 2, upon the upper side of which is an arm or crank, No. 10, which is connected by a rod with the beam Z at No. ll. The beam (Z, playing upon the pivot which is fixed in the bearing d, is attached at each end by ajoint or bar, d2, to a straight rack, c c, furnished with teeth, which are moved by the spur-wheels b b on the shafts a a, to which the gates G C are aflixed. 0n each side of a stationary rod, f, are spiral springs e e, attached to the beam d at c2 e2, which draw the beam back into place and close the gates C C. A spring, Z, having a recess or slot on its upper surface which receives the beam d, is fastened to the frame work of the platform at Z, Figs. 2 and 8. At Z2 is a pivot in the spring Z, on which is secured one end of a joint or bar connecting at Zo with the lever lo. At k2 is a joint, to which is secured the end of the rod ZL, by lifting which the conductor unlocks the beam Z from the slot in the spring Z, and the gates C C can then be opened. The lever It may be either one of the first class, in which case it has its fulcrum at h3, and extending beyond that is adjusted to a spiral spring or its equivalent la', or it may be one of the second class, in which case having its fulcrum as before it does not extend beyond it, but is provided with a weight, h4, between the fulcrum and point of contact of the lever with the lever g g. The spring is of such power or the weight is so adjusted that the lever Zt will not be lifted by the lever g unless the passenger on the step B exceeds the number of pounds weight established to distinguish between the full and half fares.
Upon that end ofthe shaft K which enters the car are the levers P, R, and N. At the end of the lever P is a pin, i', Fig. 2, on which plays the hooked end of a spring, Q. The occ of this spring is to depress the lever B, which it can only do when the weight is removed from the step B. Near the end of this lever is attached a rod, N, or pawl, acting on the wheel M as a ratchet, and preventing its reverse action. The spiral spring 0 keeps the rod N in its place. The hammer I, provided with the spring L, is operated by the ratchetwheel M, and acts on the bell H. The lever R or crank is connected by the joint or bar s with the beam or lever It, which, having its fulcrum at It', is attached at its other end tothe rod or pawl S', which moves the ratchetwheel U. The rod S extends below its point of connection with the beam It", its lower end being confined in a staple or slide, which serves to keep the/rod in its place and to give it the force of a spring. The guide r, Figs. 4 and 5, keeps the end of the lever R" in its place, and aids in giving a more steadily perpendicular motion to the rod S'. The lever or crank N' is connected by a joint or arm with the rod or pawl T, so as to give the pawl a perpendicular motion. This pawl moves the ratchet-wheel V and extends below its connection with the arm attached to the lever N', its lower end being confined so as to play within a staple or slide in a similar manner and for a similar` purpose as the staple or slide adjusted to the rod S'. The wheels U and V are furnished with ratchets X and W, Figs. 4 and 5.
Upon the shafts on which the wheels U and. V are placed are the drums Z and Y, respectively. Un the periphery of these drums is a spiral groove, so cut as to leave a band between the grooves. These drums turn and slide on the shafts, and are kept intheir place by the guides m m', so that the numbers on these bands, when seen through the apertures E F, Fig. 3, shall correctly show the number and value of the fares carried in the car. On the band on drum Z is a series of numbers from l. to 100, or more, and 0n that on drum Y a series of numbers not equal to that on drum Z, as only the grown passengers or full fires are indicated on drum Y, while drum Z registers all the passengers, both full and half fares. The guides m m' are stationary, being fastened to a shelf or rod, m5, which shelf or rod is the t'ulcrum for the levers n and n', respectively. In each head ofthe drum Y are the pins y y, which, as the drum revolves in one or the other direction, come in contact with the lever y', or the crank or arm y?, and prevent the further revolution of the drum in the direction in which it was then moving. In each head of the drum Z are similar pins, z z, which in like manner come in contact with the lever z', or the crank or arm z2, with a like effect. The lever n' plays on its t'ulcrum at e'. It is connected with the lower end of the lever y' by the arm n2. From this point of junction a jointor harnas, forms a connection with the crank n4, Fig. 6, which is affixed to the roeking shaft V. Upon this shaft is the arm p', the end of which is seen projecting through the aperture in the screen 0' at G. At the other end of this shaft are the arm y2 and the cams te. The lever n, with its fulcrum f', the lever z', arm m2, bar m3, crank m4, rocking shaft U', and arm p, arm z2, and cam a', are similarly placed in relation to the drum Z and the wheel U, and perform like offices, and are operated in a similar way with the parts just described. The end of the arm p, Fig. 6, is shown in Fig. 3, at G'. When the arm p' is depressed, the shaft V' turns, carrying with it the crank a4, which, by the joint n, and the arm 71,2 and lever y', moves the lever u', the end of which throws back the pawl T, and at 'the same time the cams w throws back the ratchet W. The wheel V being now free, the key L' is applied to the stud at end of the shaft on which drum Y is placed, and the shaft being turned, the drum is carried by the resistance of the'guide m' to the left-hand side or end of the shaft, its proper position at the beginning of the trip or day, the charac'er 0 being then shown through the aperture E, Fig. 3. The drum Z is placed in a similar position on its shaft by the depression of the arm p and the action of the parts with which it is connected, which correspond to those just described, the character 0 on drum Z being then shown through the aperture F, Fig. 3. The shafts on which the drums are placed and the shafts U' V turn on the bearings shown in Fig. 4.
The operation of my machine is as follows: The drums being set so that the character 0 is shown upon both through the aperatures F F, Fig.3, the car begins its trip. The gates C G are closed and the beam rests in the slotin the spring l. The step B, the shaft K, the lever g, have the position shown in Fig. 7, the projection t of the lever striking against the cam S, forming a lock which prevents the turning of the step B. A person now steps upon B. but cannot en er the car until the gates C C are opened., he conductor lifts the rod 7L", which, through the lever k and the connecti''n's/ therewith before described, draws down he spring Z and liberates the beam d from the slopY ..-The gates are now opened andthe movement'of the beam d causes the shaft R' to turn by the action of the rod from No. 11 on the arm No. 10, which sets the cam S free from the projection t. The step B being depressed by t-he weight of the passenger, the lever g g g rises and comes in contact with the lever h, and, if that weight is beyond that established for the division between full and half fares,lifts that lever, ifnot,not. The shaft K turns more 0r less with the step according to the weight of the passenger, and puts in motion thelevers 13,1%, and N'. The lever N', acting through the machinery before described, causes the drum Yto turn the distance of one figure when the passenger is of sufficient weight to lift the lever h, as before described.

The drum Z is also turned the distance of one figure on the band by the action of the lever R and the parts communicating motion therefrom to the wheel U. When the passenger is not of sufficient weight to lift the lever la by the means described, no motion is communicated fron the levers P andvN', but the drum Z is turned by the lever R by the means described. As a passenger leaves the car the same machinery is put in motion and the drums turned in the same manner. The drum yZ registers all the fares, and the' drum Y only the full fares. One-half of the difference between the numbers shown through aperatures E and F is the number of half-fares during the trip, and one-half of the number shown through the aperature E is the number of full fares on the trip. Each step of the car will require to be provided with the complete machine here described. So much of the machine as is placed under the platform, which has been described, is that shown in Fig. 2 to the left of the purple line D', Fig. 2. When the platform of the car is so constructed that the machinery there shown could not be so conveniently applied as that shown in the same figure to the right of that line, then the latter is applied. This consists of the step B, the shaft K', the lever g, having at its end the projection d, striking against the cam S'" on the shaft P', all which parts are like those already described and shown on the left of the line D'. The lever h., already described, with its weight or spring, is used in the saine manner as in the machinery before described, though not shown in this drawing. Upon the upper part of the shaft P is an arm, No. 8, connected by a rod with the crank, No. 9 upon the shaft No. 7. Near this crank and close to the end ofthe shaft, is an arm or crank connecting with the straight rack c' by the rod No. 62'. At the other end of the same shaft near its bearingis the crank No. 1, connecting the straight rack C" by the arm No. 6. A spring, No. 2, affixed to the frame-work of the platform at No.22, has a slot in which the upper part of the crank No. l falls when the gates are closed, which are thus locked. The end of this spring is connected by a jointed arm,No. 3, with the lever No. 4, which, turning on the pivot, is jointed with the rod or bar No. 5, which has at its extremity a catch or plate. The lever No. l2 is adjusted so as to strike this plate with its lower end, by which the rod No. 5 is moved, as shown in Fig. l0. This lever is kept in its upright position by the band No. 13. The apparatus for moving the drums and striking the bell, which has been before described, is operated by the shaft K', it being affixed to it in a similar mode to that described for attaching it to and operating it by the shaft K. The lever shown in the drawings, Fig. 4, as affixed to the shaft K' corresponds to lever N' already described. The other parts are omitted in the drawings and in this description as being a needless repetition. The operation of this arrangement is that, the passenger on the step B wishing to enter the car, the conductor draws toward him the handle of the lever No. l2, its foot pushes the plate at the end of No. 5 out into the position shown by the red lines in Fig. l0. The end of No. 5 acting on the lever No. 4 causes the arm No. 3 to draw back the spring No. 2, so that the crank No.1 is set free from the slot in the spring. The gates, being unlocked, may now be opened, and as they open the shafts a a move the spurwhcels I) Z1, whose teeth playing into those of the racks c' c" put the racks in motion, causing the shaft No. 7 to turn by means of the cranks or arms at each end of that shaft. The turning of this shaft through the arms 8 and 9 and their connectin gl rod turns the shaft P', setting free the cam 8"', which permits the step B to move with the shaft K' and the lever G Gr. The shaft puts in motion the apparatus connected with the drums and bell, and the lever G acts on the lever 7L, in the like manner and under like conditions as before described.
I deem that the machinery last described possesses some advantages over the other, but the construction of some cars is such that it cannot be so conveniently adjusted as that rst described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Leters Patent, is
l. The step B, attached to the shaft K, in combination with thelever g g g, arranged and applied substantially in the mode described, for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the gates G with the wheels b, the lracks c, or their equivalents, with the beain d and the spring Z, arranged substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
3. The mode of unlocking the beam d by the rod h, combined with the lever lo and arm k', acting on the spring Z, or their equivalents, arranged substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
4. The lever h, with its weight or spring, in combination with the lever g, shaft K, and levers l? and N', arranged substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
5. The shaft No. 7, in combination with its arms or cranks connecting it with the racks and wheels, arranged substantially as de scribed, for the purposes set forth.
6. The arrangement of the levers and rods l, 2, 5, 4, and 3, in combination with the spring 2, constructed substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
7. The shafts B and P', their cams S and S'", their connections with the beam d or shaft 7, arranged and applied substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
S. The drums Z and Y, constructed and placed as described, for the purposes specied.
9. The inode of throwing the drums out of gear by the action of the shafts U and V and the levers n. a', and the parts connected therewith, arranged substantially as described, for the purposes specied.
