Abstract
A cut control attachment for chain saws having a sole plate with a plurality of slots and apertures therein for attachment to a chain saw guide bar for adjustably receiving a ripping fence for establishing a ripping dimension together with a slide and track for control of linearity of the cut, a protractor for track alignment, an angle-adjustable guide bar yoke bracket for angularly setting a chain saw relative to the sole plate and a guide bar bracket bolt for setting the guide bar angularly in a plane 90* removed therefrom.

According to the invention, a cut control attachment for chain saws is provided in which a sole plate is attached to a chain saw guide bar, a ripping fence being slideably and adjustably received by or attached to the sole plate for adjusting and setting a ripping width dimcnsion. An angle-adjustable guide bar yoke bracket with protractor is adjustably carried by the sole plate for adjusting the cutting angle of the chain saw in one plane and an adjustable bracket bolt is provided for angularly adjusting the chain saw in a plane 90 removed from the yoke bracket adjustment. A slide is carried by the sole plate for cooperative sliding alignment with a protractor mounted track for control of linearity and angularity of the cut line. Hence, a three-dimensional guided adjustment is provided by the cut control attachment of the instant invention.
An object of the present invention is the provision of an improved chain saw cut control attachment.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cut control attachment having adjustable guides for cut angles in three planes.
Yet, another object of the invention is the provision ofa cut control attachment for chain saws which is simple in operation and extremely convenient in use.
Other objects and many attendant advantages will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the FIGS. thereof and wherein:
FIG. I is a perspective view of a prior art chain saw;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the chain saw of FIG. I with a portion of the cut control attachment of the present invention attached thereto;
FIG. 3 is a top view of a chain saw similar to FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a side elevational view of the sole plate of the present invention attached to a chain saw with vertical angle variation;
FIG. 5 is a side elevation illustrating the ripping fence attachment as applied to work;
FIG. 6 is a perspective exploded view illustrating the sole plate of FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 5 together with other mounting attachments;
FIG. 7 is a sectional view of the parts of FIG. 6 taken along lines 7.7 of FIG. 6 and shown applied to work in a vertical cut;
FIG. 8 is a perspective view partially exploded of a protractor attachment of the present invention;

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Referring to FIG. I, a chain saw is shown generally at 21 having a power package 22, a handle portion 23, and a guide bar 24, around which is mounted a tooth cutting chain 26.
Referring to FIG. 2, a chain saw is again shown at 21 with a power package 22, a handle portion 23, guide bar 24, and tooth cutting chain 26. Guide bar 24 is attached to guide bar bracket 27 which in turn is coupled to sole plate 28. The hand grip 29 is integral with sole plate 28.
Referring to FIG. 3, a chain saw is again shown at 21 having a power package 22, a handle portion 23, and a guide bar 24. Tooth cutting chain 26 is shown making a 90 cut through a work piece 31. Sole plate 28 is shown coupled to guide bar bracket 27 which in turn is coupled to the guide bar 24 within tooth cutting chain 26.
Referring to FIG. 4, a chain saw is again shown at 21 having a power pack' 22 with a handle portion 23. Guide bar 24 is rotatably and adjustably coupled by means of bracket bolt 33 to sole plate 28 through guide bar bracket 27.
Referring to FIG. 5, chain saw 21 is shown with a power pack 22 and a handle portion 23. A ripping fence 30 is slidably coupled to sole plate 28 which in turn is coupled to guide bar bracket 27 which in turn is coupled to the guide bar 24 within tooth cutting chain 26. The ripping fence determines the width of the cut on work 31 from the bottom edge thereof to the tooth cutting chain 26.
Referring to FIG. 6, sole plate 28 is shown with stabilizer bar slots 34, track slide slot 36, a central aperture 37 and a ripping fence slot 38. The stabilizer bar slots 34 are positioned to receive projected threaded studs 39 and 41 of stabilizer bar 42. These threaded studs are held captive by a pair of locking nuts (not shown). On the opposite side of central aperture 37, a track slide slot 36 in sole plate 38 carries a track slide bolt aperture 44 positioned for receiving a bolt through the track slide slot and held captive on the opposite side by a nut (not shown) to captivate track slide 43 which with tongue 45 prevents its rotation. Track slide 43 is shown in working proximity with a long track 46 which may be attached to the work being sawed or to a jig such as a mitre box and which is capable of being extended as shown by the dotted section below.
Referring to FIG. 7, the parts of FIG. 6 are shown with identical members assembled in cross-section establishing a truly linear cut in work piece 31 as the track slide 43 moves down the rail 46. A stabilizer bar 42 is shown held by a nut 48 in stabilizer slot 34. As indicated by dotted lines the stabilizer 42 can be reversed. Rail guide 43 is shown retained by nut 49.
Referring to FIG. 8, a protractor SI is shown having a pair of anchor screws 52 through top ledge section 53 for attaching it to any work being sawed. This protractor can be attached as shown by shoulder screws 40 and 55 to the holes in rail 46 of FIG. 6. Pivot shoulder screw 40 passes through a central pivot hole 50 in protractor 51 and adjustment lock screw 55 passes through arcuate slot 54 and are threadibly coupled to nuts 56 and 60, respectively, for adjusting the long track 46 relative to protractor 51.
Referring to FIG. 9, a cross-sectional view similar to FIG. 7 is shown with all members of FIGS. 6 and 8 wherein protractor 51 is attached to work 31 by drive pins 52. Stabilizer bar 42 is shown in reversed position.
Referring to FIG. 10, anchor screw 52 is shown with a head portion 56 attached to a threaded section 57 with a shoulder 58 therebetween. Shoulder 58 contracts spacer 59 which in turn is attached to protractor top ledge 53. A retaining ring 61 is installed in a groove of screw 52 to hold the same captive within spacer 59. The threaded portion 57 of anchor screw 52 is similar to a standard high-gage wood screw except that two opposite sides of the screw are flattened as at 62 to create a chisel point. In use, the anchor screw is driven into the work with the palm of the hand or a hammer and then rotated 90 to engage the threads in the work.
FIG. 11 illustrates the cooperative working of the protractor 51 and track 46 fixed at an angle by locking nuts 56 and 60 on shoulder screws 40 and 55, respectively. An angled cut 68 is indicated by dotted lines in work 31. Anchor screws 52 are shown going down through brackets 59 and protractor 51.
Referring to FIGS. 12 and 13, a blade angle yoke protractor is located generally at 69 attached to sole plate 28 by shoulder screws 70 and lock nuts 72 near the center of central aperture 37. Sole plate 28 is shown with angularly adjustable guide bar yoke bracket 71 adjustably attached thereto by shoulder screws 70 and lock nuts 72. This adjustable guide bar yoke bracket 71 replaces the fixed angle guide bar bracket 27 shown in FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and and enables the guide bar 24 and the saw chain 26 to be canted at an angle relative to the sole plate 28. The protractor scale 73 is on one end face of yoke bracket 71 and a pointer 74 is on the static support 75 which is contiguous with sole plate 28. Guide bar yoke bracket is provided with shoulder screw 76 and lock nut 77 for attachment to guide bar 24.
It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing disclosure relates to only a preferred embodiment of the present invention and that it is intended to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for the purposes of the disclosure 5 which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention claimed is:
1. A out control attachment for chain saws comprising:
a chain saw guide bar;
a sole plate having a plurality of apertures and slots therein;
an angularly adjustable guide bar yoke bracket atljustably carried by said sole plate and operable for adjusting a cutting angle of a chain saw in a first plane; and
an adjustable bracket bolt rotatably coupled to said guide bar yoke bracket and said chain saw guide bar for angularly adjusting the chain saw in a second plane substantially ninety degrees removed from said first plane.
2. A out control attachment for chain saws comprising:
a chain saw guide bar;
a sole plate having a plurality of apertures and slots therein, said chain saw guide bar being angularly adjustably coupled in a first plane to said sole plate; and
a slide member carried by said sole plate for cooperative sliding alignment with a protractor mounted track for control of linearity and angularity in a plane substantially ninety degrees removed from said first plane of a cut line. 3. The cut control attachment for chain saws of claim 2 wherein:
said protractor mounted track is attached to the wood being cut by at least one anchor screw. 4. The cut control attachment for chain saws of claim 3 wherein:
said anchor screw has a head portion attached to a threaded section, the threaded section terminating in a point, two opposite sides of said anchor screw being flattened resulting in a chisel point. l
Claims (4)
1. A cut control attachment for chain saws comprising: a chain saw guide bar; a sole plate having a plurality of apertures and slots therein; an angularly adjustable guide bar yoke bracket adjustably carried by said sole plate and operable for adjusting a cutting angle of a chain saw in a first plane; and an adjustable bracket bolt rotatably coupled to said guide bar yoke bracket and said chain saw guide bar for angularly adjusting the chain saw in a second plane substantially ninety degrees removed from said first plane.
2. A cut control attachment for chain saws comprising: a chain saw guide bar; a sole plate having a plurality of apertures and slots therein, said chain saw guide bar being angularly adjustably coupled in a first plane to said sole plate; and a slide member carried by said sole plate for cooperative sliding alignment with a protractor mounted track for control of linearity and angularity in a plane substantially ninety degrees removed from said first plane of a cut line.
3. The cut control attachment for chain saws of claim 2 wherein: said protractor mounted track is attached to the wood being cut by at least one anchor screw.
4. The cut control attachment for chain saws of claim 3 wherein: said anchor screw has a head portion attached to a threaded section, the threaded section terminating in a point, two opposite sides of said anchor screw being flattened resulting in a chisel point.
