A sandpaper holder block having a head portion and a handle portion, the head portion having an anvil groove therein for receiving a protuberance on variously shaped anvils with an anvil clamp screw for locking the head portion around the protuberance; first and second paper clamp plates for receiving sandpaper between the head portion and the clamp plates together with a lever cam coupled to a clamping toggle pin for clamping the paper clamp plates against the paper and holding it in a fixed position around one of the variously shaped anvils.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a sandpaper holder block and more particularly to a sandpaper holder block having removable variously shaped anvils.
According to the invention, a sandpaper holder block is provided having a handle portion and a head portion, the head portion having a groove therein dimensioned for receiving a protuberance on various anvils. The head portion is slotted beyond the anvil groove for allowing a clamp screw to clamp the head portion onto the protuberance of the variously shaped anvils for holding one of the anvils rigidly in place. The head portion carries first and second clamping paper clamp plates on opposite sides thereon which are coupled together by a clamping toggle pin which in turn is coupled to a lever cam. After the paper is inserted between the head portion and the clamp plates and around one of the anvils the lever cam is rotated into the lock position which pulls the paper clamp plates against the sandpaper holding it in a fixed position for a sanding operation.
An object of the present invention is the provision of an improved sandpaper holder block.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a sandpaper holder block having removable variously shaped anvils.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a sandpaper holder block having an improved sandpaper clamp mechanism.
Yet another object of the invention is the provision of a sandpaper holder block which is extremely versatile and simple in operation.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of the present invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the Figures thereof and wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation view of the preferred embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a bottom elevation view of the embodiment of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a top view of the embodiment of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a side elevation view of the anvil shown in FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a top view of the embodiment of FIG. 1 in operation; and
FIGS. 6, 7, 8 and 9 illustrate cross sectional views of variously shaped anvils.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING Referring to FIG. 1, handle 11 which is contiguous with head portion 12 is in two essentially mirror imaged sections (not shown) coupled together by handle assembly screw 13. Head portion 12 carries a paper clamp plate 14 in a clamp slot 15. A nose portion 16 carries an anvil in an anvil slot 18 and is clamped at anvil clamp screw 19.
Referring to FIG. 2, handle portion 11 has a mating half 11A and is coupled together by assembly screw 13. Head portion 12 has an anvil slot 18 for receiving protuberance 21 of anvil 20. Paper clamp plates 14 and 14A are coupled together by a clamp toggle pin 22 which is further coupled to a lever cam 23 via pivot pin 24.
Referring to FIG. 3, nose portion 16 has a mating half 16A and is shown having a slot 26 extending from anvil slot 18. Anvil slot 18 is dimensioned for receiving protuberance 21 of anvil 20. Anvil clamp screw 19 threadably engages the nose portion 16A. The nose portions 16 and 16A are contiguous with handle portions 11 and 11A respectively.
Referring to FIG. 4, anvil 20 has a protuberance 21.
Referring to FIG. 5, the assembly is shown with sandpaper 27 clamped between clamp plates 14 and 14A with lever cam 23 in its locked position and anvil clamp screw 19 (not shown) pulling slot 26 in a closed position locking protuberance 21 of anvil 20 in position.
Referring to FIG. 6, a protruding circular surfaced anvil is shown at 28.
Referring to FIG. 7, a keystone surfaced anvil is shown at 29.
Referring to FIG. 8, an oval shaped surface is shown on anvil 31.
Referring to FIG. 9, a recessed surface is shown on anvil 32.
OPERATION Referring now to FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, it can be seen that any one of the variously shaped anvils 20, 28, 29,31 or 32 can have its protuberance portion 21 received by anvil groove 18 in nose 16. After this is received, anvil clamp screw 19 is tightened pulling the sides of slot 26 together and clamping onto the installed anvil. It is pointed out here that while anvils are shown as rubber or plastic, any suitable material could be utilized. After the anvil is in place, the sandpaper 27 (FIG. 5) is pulled between sandpaper clamp plates 13 and 13A and the edge of the head portion 12 and over the front surface of the installed anvil. At this time lever cam 23 is rotated to the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 2 which pulls clamp plates 13 and 13A against sandpaper 27. The sandpaper is then fixedly held in place across the front surface of the chosen anvil. The anvil shown in FIG. 5 is utilized for corner sanding as shown in proximity to work 33.
It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing disclosure relates to only a preferred embodiment of the invention, and that it is intended to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen, for the purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A sandpaper holder block comprising:
first and second mating sections, each of said first and second mating sections defining a contiguous head portion and handle portion;
first and second recesses in the head portions of said first and second mating sections, said first and second recesses cooperating to define an anvil groove when said first and second mating sections are assembled;
an anvil having a protuberance extending therefrom dimensioned for and being received by said anvil groove;
coupling means coupled to the head portions of said first and second mating sections for coupling said 5 first and second mating sections together and clamping and holding said protuberance within said anvil groove; and
first and second clamp blades carried by said head portion and dimensioned for receiving sandpaper clamping said clamp plates against said paper. =l

Claims (2)

1. A sandpaper holder block comprising: first and second mating sections, each of said first and second mating sections defining a contiguous head portion and handle portion; first and second recesses in the head portions of said first and second mating sections, said first and second recesses cooperating to define an anvil groove when said first and second mating sections are assembled; an anvil having a protuberance extending therefrom dimensioned for and being received by said anvil groove; coupling means coupled to the head portions of said first and second mating sections for coupling said first and second mating sections together and clamping and holding said protuberance within said anvil groove; and first and second clamp blades carried by said head portion and dimensioned for receiving sandpaper between said head portion and said clamp blades and around said anvil.
2. The sandpaper holder block of claim 1 and further including: a clamping toggle pin passing through said clamp plates and said head portion; and a lever cam coupled to said clamping toggle pin for clamping said clamp plates against said paper.
