SHEEI 2 BF 2 IQNOCKDOWN JACK ASSEMBLY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a knockdown jack assembly for elevating suburban type tractors and the like.
Suburban riding type tractors are designed to accept for mounting a variety of attachments for performing different functions. The installation of certain of such attachments requires the elevation of the tractor above ground level. Heretofore, no satisfactory lifting devices intended particularly for use on tractors of the type under consideration have been available. Generally, such devices have consisted of various types of conventional jacks intended for use on automobiles which present conditions very different from those found in suburban type riding tractors. As a result, the use of such conventional jacks, in many instances may be hazardous with the possibility of injury to the operator.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a jack assembly adapted particularly for use with suburban type riding tractors and the like.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a jack assembly of the foregoing type which affords a high degree of safety in its use and operation.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a jack of the foregoing type which may be stored in knockdown condition and readily assembled for use.
Still a further object of this invention is the provision of a jack of the foregoing type which is simple in construction and efficient in operation.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. l is a side elevational view of a jack assembly, in accordance with my invention, showing the same applied to garden type riding tractor, shown in broken lines.
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the jack assembly shown in FIG. ll.
FIG. 3 is a rear elevational view thereof.
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of a detail, taken substantially on line 4l4 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is an exploded perspective view of the jack assembly; and
FIG. 7 is a perspective view showing certain of the parts in collapsed relation.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates, generally, a main support assembly comprising a vertical guide column 11 formed preferably of tubing rectangular in cross-section and welded at the bottom to a base plate 12 to which is secured a socket member 13 in spaced relation to the column 111. The socket member 13 provides a generally square receptacle for the lower end of a jack member, hereinafter to be described. A pair of metal plates 14 are welded to the column H and to the base member 12 and extend in an opposite direction from the socket member l3. Received between the plates 14 is tubular leg 16, substantially like the column 11. This leg is pivotally secured between the plates 14 by a pin 17 passing through registering apertures 19 in the plates. The plates are provided with another pair of coaxially disposed apertures 18 which are adapted to register with corresponding apertures 20 in the leg 16 when the leg is disposed in horizontal position, as illustrated in FIG. 6 to receive a pin 17 which locks the two parts in a right angle relation. An angle foot member 21 is welded to the distal end of the leg 16 and extends laterally on both sides thereof to afford lateral support for the jack assembly so that it is free standing. It will be understood that the leg 16 may be compactly folded to the position illustrated in FIG. 7 parallel to the column 11 for storage.
The lift assembly 22 includes a generally U-shaped member 23 formed of tubular sections welded together and comprising a cross bar 24 and a pair of parallel arms 26 on the ends of which are welded arcuate sections 27 constituting cradle elements. Welded to the cross bar 24, medially thereof, are a pair of parallel plates 28 spaced apart a distance sufficient to slidably receive therebetween the column llll. A pair of guide rollers 29, each rotatably mounted. on a respective pin 31 secured in the plates 28 are arranged to engage opposite faces of the column 11 as illustrated in FIG. 4. It will be seen that the placement of the rollers 29 is such as to counteract the force applied on the arms 26 when the same are under stress. Each of the plates 28 is provided with an aperture 30, the apertures 30 being in horizontal registration and arranged to receive a removable pin 32, as hereinafter will be explained.
The jack unit 33 is generally conventional and is of the type commonly used for elevating an automobile, as when changing a tire. The unit 33 includes a square tubular standard 35 having, on one face thereof, a series of struck out teeth 36 and having a cooperating lift mechanism 37 actuated by a jack handle 38. The lift mechanism 37, preferably, includes a pair of spaced plates 39, the spacing of the plates being such that they are received between the plates 28. The plates 39 include a pair of apertures 41 coaxially disposed and of a size to register with the apertures 30 in the plates 28 so as to receive the pin 32. The standard 35 is arranged to be received in the socket member l3 when in assembled relation.
When not in use, the components of my jack assembly may be readily taken apart and placed in a generally flat receptacle to occupy a minimum of storage space.
In assembling the jack for use, the leg 16 is rocked from the collapsed condition shown in FIG. 7 to the erected condition shown in FIG. 6 and the pin 19 inserted through registering apertures 18 and 20 to lock the two members in a rigid right angle relation. A wire cotter pin 19a passed through the opening in the pin prevents inadvertent displacement of the pin. The lift assembly 22 is then mounted on the tubular column ll 1 with the column passing between the plates 28 and the rollers 29 as illustrated in FIG. 4. The lower end of the standard 35 of the jack unit is inserted in the socket 13 and the lift assembly 22 is moved on the column 11 to effect registration of the apertures in plates 28 with the apertures 41 of plates 39, after which the pin 32 is inserted and secured with a cotter pin. Thus, the column ill and standard 35 are disposed in parallel relation as illustrated in FIG. 1 and the entire assembly is free standing. The jack is operated in a conventional manner to effect lifting of a vehicle to a desired height.
Various changes coming within the spirit of my invention may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art; hence, I do not wish to be limited to the specific embodiments shown and described or uses mentioned, but intend the same to be merely exemplary, the scope of my invention being limited only by the appended claims.
