Abstract

The first and second margin stops of a typewriter carry first and second control levers operated by the typewriter carriage at the end and beginning of a typed line, respectively, and being located on opposite sides of a control bail which is turned by the operated first control lever to effect a first function required at the end of a typed line, for example, ringing a bell, and by the operated second control lever to effect a function required at the beginning of a typed line after a carriage return, for example, disengaging a drive clutch so that the carriage stops. Since the bail is parallel to the margin stop rail, the control levers can slide along the bail when the margin stops are adjusted. Lost motion connections are provided between an actuating lever secured to the control bail, and links connected with the bell and with the drive clutch, respectively, so that the respective functions can be independently carried out.

FUNCTION CONTROLLING MARGIN STOP ARRANGEMENT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates particularly to motor driven typewriters with a carriage supporting a type carrier. The carriage is provided with an abutment which engages adjustable margin stops at the beginning and end of a line.
In a typewriter of the prior art, the left margin stop is not only used for stopping the carriage, but also for disengaging a drive clutch by which the carriage is driven, which is accomplished by a small displacement of the margin stop rail by the respective margin stop against the action of a spring.
In the arrangement of the prior art, when applied to carriages supporting a type carrier, the entire mass of the margin stop device must be suddenly accelerated at the end of the carriage return movement, which causes undesired oscillations and noise. It is also undesirable that manually operated parts of the margin stop move in view of the operator.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It isone object of the invention to overcome the disadvantages of known apparatus for effecting by means of the margin stops, functions required at the beginning and end of the line.
It is another object of the invention to provide a function controlling margin stop arrangement of simple and efficient construction, which operates without noise and oscillations.
Another object of the invention is to use a control bail permitting adjustment of the margin stops on the rail, but controlling and effecting functions required at the beginning and end of a typed line.
In accordance with the invention, the control bail is held in a central position of rest by centering biasing means, and on each margin stop, a control means is movably mounted which, when engaged by an abutment on the typewriter carriage, act in opposite directions on the control bail in such a manner that the same either operates a signalling device such as a bell, and a key lock, as required at the end of a line, while on the other hand at the beginning of a line, another function can be effected, such as disengagement of a drive clutch which was closed upon operation of the carriage return key.
Due to the use of an element of the standard typewriter for the control of additional functions, it becomes possible to mount the margin stop rail fixedly in the machine frame, extending in the direction of movement of the type carrier carriage.
Generally speaking, a function controlling margin stop arrangement according to the invention comprises a margin stop rail; a first margin stop and a second margin stop mounted on the margin stop rail and being associated with the end and thebeginning of a typed line, respectively; control bail means mounted for angular movement between at least one first control position and at least one second control position, and an intermediate position of rest about an axis parallel with the marginstop rail, the control bail means including an elongated bail portion parallel to the axis and extending to the first and second margin stops; biasing means for holding the control bail means in the position of rest and including first and second control means. preferably control levers, movably mounted on the first and second margin stops, respectively, and engaging the bail portion from opposite sides; a typewriter carriage mounted for movement parallel to the margin stop rail in a writing direction to a first actuating position engaging and displacing the first control means so that the control bail means is shifted to the first control position, and also movable in the return direction to a second actuating position engaging and displacing the second control means so that the control bail means is shifted to the second control position; and first and second function performing means actuated by said control bail means in said first and second control positions, respectively, to perform first and second functions, respectively, required in said first and second actuating positions of the carriage.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS A margin stop rail 2 is mounted in the frame 1 of a typewriter and has ends secured by pins 2a to support arms a, see FIGS. 1 and 2, which have shaft portions 61 mounted for angular movement in bearings 606 on frame 1 so that by operation of a key 60., the margin stop rail 2 can be angularly displaced. Each of the sup.- port arms 60a is normally held in the position shown in FIG. 2 by a spring 60d which biases the support arm 60a against a stationary stop 60c. A first margin stop 5 and a second margin stop 4 are mounted on the rail 2 by means of cavities 62 the rail 2 being provided with rack teeth 2b on one side, and is pressed by spring 64 to a position in which the rack teeth 2b engage a transverse pin 66. The rack teeth 2b are spaced in accordance with the spacing between successive imprints of the typewriter, and the margin stops 4 and 5 can be ad justed along the rail 2 by means of a handle 40 or 5a. Margin stops 4 and 5 have pivots 6 and 7, on which control levers 8 and 9, respectively, are mounted for angular movement. Control levers 8 and 9 have engaging portions 10 and 11 which cooperate with an abutment 12 secured to a carriage 3 which supports the type carrier head 3a for movement parallel to the rail 2, by means of rails 3b and 30, as shown in FIG. 2. In addition to the main abutment 12, the carriage 3 has another abutment in the form of a pin 26 whose func- 'tion will be explained hereinafter. When during movement of carriage 3 with type head 3a in the writing direction toward the right as viewed in FIG. 1, the abutment 12 engages the engaging portion 1 1, control lever 9 is turned clockwise, and when the abutment 12 engages the engaging portion 10, the control lever 8 is turned in the counterclockwise direction.
Control levers 8 and 9 have hubs 13 and 14 which support torsion centering springs 15 which serve the purpose of holding the control levers 8 and 9 in a central position. The legs of the springs 15 are located on opposite sides of, and resiliently engage, two studs 16 and 17, the studs 16 being secured to the control levers 8 and 9, and the studs 17 secured to the margin stops 4 and 5. Consequently, control levers 8 and 9 are angularly displaceable in opposite directions against the action of the centering spring 15, and are resiliently arrested in the central position.
The control levers 8 and 9 of the margin stops 4 and 5 have at the lower end thereof, pins or lugs 18 and 19, respectively, which are located on opposite sides of an elongated bail portion 200 of a control bail means which further includes an actuating lever 22 mounted on a journal portion 21 at one end of the bail 20. The journal portion 53 at the other end of the bail is connected by curved portion 54 with the elongated bail portion 20a, as seen in FIG. 5 which illustrates a modified construction in which a spring 50 is wound on the journal portion 53 and has two legs 50a located on opposite sides of the bail portion 20a, and also on opposite sides of a pin or stud 52 secured to the bracket 1a which has a bearing 1a for journal 53. A corresponding bearing 1a is provided in the other bracket 1a for the journal portion 21. Brackets la are secured to the frame 1 of the typewriter.
As best seen in FIG. 2, the lugs or pins 18, 19 are located directly above and below the elongated bail portion 20a when the control levers 8 and 9 are held in the central position thereof by springs 15.
The elongated bail portion 200 is parallel to the margin stop rail 2 and is long enough for cooperation with the lugs 18 and '19 in any adjusted position of the margin stops 4 and 5. When the control levers 8 and 9 are centered, the bail 20 is also centered in a position of rest shown at I in FIGS. 1, 2, 3, and 3c.
When during the typing of a line, carriage 3 moving in the writing direction to the right as viewed in FIG. 1 approaches the end of the line, the first step 40 of the abutment 12 on the carriage 3 engages the engaging portion 11 of the first control lever 9 and turns the same together with lug 19 so that control bail 20 is turned from the position of rest I, see FIGS. 2 and 3, to the first control position II, see FIG. 2, so that the actuating lever 22 is turned in clockwise direction as viewed in FIG. 3a. When the typing is continued, the second step 41 of the abutment 12 engages the engaging portion 11 of the first control lever 9 so that the lug 19 thereof turns control bail 20 further in clockwise direction as viewed in FIG. 2 to another first control position III.
Actuating lever 22 which turns with the control bail 20 about a common axis. has two arms 23 and 24, and arm 23 is provided with a slanted engaging portion 25 cooperating with the pin 26 secured to carriage 3. Arm 24 of actuating lever 22 has a guide pin 27 at the free end thereof which is located in a first slot 28 of a first link 30 and in a second slot 29 of a second link 31, as shown in FIG. 3. The illustration of FIGS. 3, 3a, 3b and 3c is schematic inasmuch as it shows two guide pins 27, but only one guide pin 27 is preferably used, and passes through both slots 28 and 29 of the links 30 and 31, as shown in FIG. 1.
The first link 30 is part of first function performing means 98 which include signalling means 32 and type key locking means 33.
The signalling means 32 include a double armed lever 82 mounted on a stationary pivot 83 for angular movement, and having a pin 84 located in a slot 85 of link 30. The double armed lever 82 is biased by a spring 83a in clockwise direction about its pivot 83 and carries at its lower end a pawl 82a. A resilient striker 86 has a projection 88 which engages pawl 82a during movement of the control bail 20 with actuating lever 22 and pin 27 from the position of rest I to the first control position II shown in FIG. 3a. The striker 86 is first resiliently displaced, and than is returned by its resiliency to hit the bell 87 so that a sound indicates the arrival of the carriage 3 and type carrier 3a near the end of the typed line.
The locking means 33 include a lever 89 with a locking element 92, turnable about a pin 90 and biased by spring 93 which is secured to stationary part 93a. Lever 89 carries a pin 91 located in a slot 42 of the link 30.
While the bell 87 is operated when the control bail means 20, 22 is turned to the first control position II, turning of the control bail means 20, 22 to the other first control position III due to the engagement between the second step 41 of abutment 12 with the engaging portion 11 of control lever 9, turns actuating lever 22 to the position III shown in FIG. 3b, and lever 89 is displaced to a position in which the locking element 92 is located under the locking portion 94 of a row of type levers 95, and locks the same, as is desired in the end position of the carriage 3 at the end of a line.
When the control bail means 20, 22 is in the position of rest I, pin 27 engages one end of slot 28, and is located in the middle of the longer slot 29, as shown in FIG. 3. Consequently, actuating lever 22 can turn in counterclockwise direction without displacing links 30 and 31, and displaces only link 30 during angular movement in clockwise direction to the first control positions II and III.
The ends 71 and 72 of a carriage return cord are connected to opposite sides of the carriage 3, as best seen in FIG. 1. The carriage return cord 70 is guided over guide rollers 73 and 74, mounted on the machine frame 1 on pins and 76, and passes in several loops over a carriage return drum 77, fixedly connected with an escapement gear 78 which cooperates with an escapement pawl 44 during the step wise movement of Link 31 of the second function performing means 99 is connected with the clutch control lever 34 which cooperates with a projection 81 on clutch 37. A spring 96 biases clutch control lever 34 to turn about a shaft 34a in clockwise direction, but in the position of rest of the control bail means 20, 22, an arresting lever 35, turnable about a pivot 35a, engages with the arresting portion 35b the end portion 34b of the clutch control lever 34 and holds the same in the position shown in FIG. 3
in which the projection 340 of clutch control lever 34 blocks projection 81 of clutch 37 so that clutch 37 is disengaged, and the carriage 3 is not driven until pressure on the carriage return key 36 turns another lever 36a about the pivot 36b so that arresting lever 35 is turned by link 36c in counterclockwise direction against the action of a spring 36d secured to a frame part 36e, which results in release of portion 34b of clutch control lever 34 by the arresting portion 35b of arresting lever 35. The spring 96 turns clutch control lever 34 in clockwise direction to release clutch projection 81 so that clutch 37 engages and drives the carriage 3 in the return direction until projection 43 on the abutment 12 of carriage 3 engages the engaging portion of control lever 8, and turns control lever 8 in counterclockwise direction so that the lug l8 displaces the control bail to a second control position IV shown in chain lines in FIGS. 1, 2 and 30. As best seen in FIG. 30, the displacement of actuating lever 22 to the second control position IV transmits through pin 27 and slot 29, a turning moment on the clutch control lever 34 against the action of spring 96 so that clutch control lever 34 is placed in the path of movement of clutch projection 81, is engaged by the same, and disengages the clutch 37 so that the carriage 3 is stopped in the left end position.
Slot 29 of the second link 31 is longer than slot 28 of the first link 30, and the pin 27 of actuating lever 22 is located at the center of slot 29 so that the control bail means 20, 22 can make an angular movement in clockwise direction for operating the signalling means 32 and the key locking means 33 without transferring motion to the second link 31 which can move together with clutch control lever 34 to an operative position abutting with the right end of slot 29 on pin 27 of actuating lever 22. During the first part of the movement of link 30, while control bail means 20, 22 moves to the first control positionll, the signalling device 32 is actuated, while the slot 42 and pin 91 prepare the operation of key locking means 33. During continuation of the typing, when the second stop 41 on abutment 12 becomes effective to displace control lever 9, so that the control bail means 20,22 move to the other first position III, the link 30 operates the key locking means 33, as shown in FIG. 3b. I
During the angular movement of the control bail means 20, 22 by the control lever 9 of the first margin stop 5 in clockwise direction, control bail 20 angularly displaces control lever 8 without any effect. When after start of the carriage 3 return movement by the carriage return key 36, the engaging portion 11 slides off the abutment 12 of the carriage 3 moving to the left, the first control lever 9 is returned by its centering spring 15 to a central position in which it is resiliently arrested. At the same time, the centering spring 15 of margin stop 4 returns the control lever 8 to the central position, while the control bail means 20, 22 is returned to the position of rest by the lug 18.
When upon operation of the carriage return key 36, clutch control lever 34, turned clockwise by spring96 into engagement with the projection 350 on arresting lever 35, moves the link 31 to the left, the right end of the slot 29 assumes a preparatory position in relation to pin 27. When abutment 12 engages with projection 43 the engaging portion 10 of the second control lever 8, the same turns in counterclockwise direction as viewed in FIG. 1, so that the lug 18 turns control bail means 20, 22 in counterclockwise direction to the second control position IV, shown in chain lines in FIGS. 1, 2 and 30. Pin 27 of the actuating lever 22 pulls, through link 31, the clutch control lever 34 to the position arrested by arresting lever 35, so that the carriage drive clutch 37 is disengaged. The return of the second control lever 8 by the centering spring 15, and the return of the control bail means 20, 22 by the centering spring 15 of the first control lever 9, is carried out during the first writing steps of the type carrier carriage to the right.
If it is desired that the carriage 3 with its abutment 12 passes the second margin stop 4, in order to be stopped by a final stop, not shown in the drawing, which may be secured to the frame 1, the margin stop rail 2 is turned by operation of a margin stop control key 60 about its axis 61, as best seen in FIG. 2. When the margin stop 4 is tilted, the respective control lever 8 is also tilted so that its engaging end portion 10 is tilted to the position 10a shown in broken lines in FIG. 2, located outward of the path of the projection 43 so that the carriage -3 can continue its return movement. The margin stop 5 with control lever 9 is tilted in the same manner by operation of key 60 so that projections or stops 40 and 41 of abutment 12 can pass the margin stop 5.
When the margin stop 4 is displaced by operation of key 60, and not engaged by abutment 12, the type carrier carriage 3 runs with its pin 26 against theslanted end portion 25 of the actuating lever 22 and turns the same together with control bail 20 in counterclockwise direction so that the clutch 37 is disengaged, as explained above.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 3, the control bail means 20, 22 is held in a central position of rest by the lugs 18 and 19 of control levers 8 and 9, and angular movement of the control bail means 20, 22 out of the position of rest to the first'or second control positions is resiliently resisted by springs 15.
In the modified embodiment shown in FIG. 4, a cen-' tering spring 50 is provided which directly acts on the control bail 20 and abuts with one leg 50a on a fixed pin 52 secured to the bracket 1a of the frame 1. Spring 50 is wound on the journal and portion 53, and biases the control bail 20 to the central position of rest. The
control levers 9 and 8, shown in FIG. 4, abut with lugs 18 and 19 on opposite sides of the elongated bail portion 20a, and are biased by springs 51 wound about hubs 13 and 14 of control levers 8 and 9 to bias the control bail 20 to the central position of rest. However,
the force of springs 51 is substantially smaller than the force of the centering springs of the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 3.
It will be seen that the signalling means 32 and the type key locking means 33 are related to functions required at the end of a typed line, and constitute, together with link 30, first function performing means 98. The clutch operating device constitutes a second function performing means 99 for performing a function required after a return movement of the carriage 3. Other functions related to the end and beginning of a typed line, may be carried out by the first function performing means 98, and by the second function performing means 99. For example, a line spacing device may be operated by the second function performing means 99. In such a construction, another second margin stop, not shown in the drawing, may be provided, which angularly displaces the control bail means 20, 22 a greater angle than the above-described second margin stop 4.
From the above description it will become apparent the an embodiment of the invention comprises a margin stop rail 2; a first margin stop 5 and a second margin stop 4 adjustably mounted on the margin stop rail 2 and being associated with the end and the beginning of a typed line, respectively; control bail means 20, 22 mounted for angular movement between at least one first control position ll, at least one second control position IV, and an intermediate position of rest I, about an axis parallel with the margin stop rail 2, and including an elongated bail portion 200 parallel to said axis and extending to the first and second margin stops 5 and 4; biasing means 15, 8, 9, 50 holding said control bail means 20, 22 in the position of rest, and including first ll, 9, 19 and second 10, 8, 18 control means movably mounted at pivots 7 and 6 on the first and second margin stops 5 and 4, respectively, and engaging said bail portion a from opposite sides; a typewriter carriage 3 mounted for movement parallel to the margin stop rail 2 in a writing direction to a first actuating position engaging and displacing the first control means 11, 9, 19 so that the control bail means 20, 22 is shifted to the first control position II, and also movable in return direction to a second actuating position engaging and displacing the second control means 10, 8, 18 so that the control bail means 20, 22 is shifted to the second control position IV; and first and second function per forming means 98 and 99 actuated by said control bail means 20, 22 in said first and second control positions ll, IV, respectively, to perform first and second functions, respectively, required at the end and beginning of a typed line.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful'application in other types of margin stop arrangements differing from the type described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a function controlling margin stop arrangement including a tiltable control bail 20 controlling through an actuating lever 22 first and second fucntion performing means 98 and 99 to perform first and second functions respectively required at the end and beginning of a typed line, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. Function controlling margin stop arrangement, comprising a margin stop rail;
a first margin stop and a second margin stop adjustably mounted on said margin stop rail and being associated with the end and the beginning of a typed line, respectively;
control bail means mounted for angular movement between at least one first control position, at least one second control position, and an intermediate position of rest, about an axis parallel with said margin stop rail, and including an elongated bail portion parallel to said axis and extending to said first and second margin stops;
biasing means for holding said control bail means in said position of rest, and including first and second control means movably mounted on said first and second margin stops, respectively, and engaging said bail portion from opposite sides;
a typewriter carriage mounted for movement parallel to said margin stop rail in a writing direction to a first actuating position engaging and displacing said first control means so that said control bail means is shifted to said first control position, and also movable in a return direction to a second actuating position engaging and displacing said second control means so that said control bail means is shifted to said second control position; and
first and second function performing means actuated by said control bail means in said first and second control positions, respectively, to perform first and second functions, respectively, required at the end and the beginning of a typed line.
2. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first function performing means include signalling means for acoustically indicating the approaching end of a typed line.
3. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, comprising manually operated typewriter keys; and wherein said first function performing means include locking means for locking said typewriter keys in a position of rest.
4. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first function performing means include signalling means for acoustically indicating the approaching end of a typed line, and comprising manually operated typewriter keys; and wherein said first function performing means include locking means for locking said typewriter keys in a position of rest.
5. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, further comprising drive means for returning said carriage to said second actuating position; and a carriage return key for actuating said drive means; and wherein said second function performing means include means for rendering said drive means inactive so that said carwherein said drive means include a clutch biased to an engaged position in which said carriage is driven in said return direction; and wherein said inactive rendering means of said second function performing means cause disengagement of said clutch when actuated by said control bail means in said second control position.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first and second control means include first and second control levers, respectively, mounted on said first and second margin stops, respectively, for angular movement and wherein said biasing means include first and second springs mounted on said first and second margin stops respectively, for holding said first and second control levers on opposite sides of said elongated bail portion so that said control bail means are biased from said first and second control positions to said position of rest.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 7, comprising a supporting frame having a fixed pin, and bearings mounted on said frame along said axis; wherein said control bail means include journal end portions mounted in said bearings for angular movement; and wherein said biasing means include spring means wound on at least one of said journal end portions and engaging said elongated bail portion and said pin for holding said control bail means in said intermediate position of rest.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 7, comprising a supporting frame; and bearings mounted on said frame along said axis; wherein said control bail means include journal end portions mounted in said bearings for angular movement so that said control bail means can turn between said first and second control positions; and wherein said biasing means includes spring means abutting said frame and said control bail means for resiliently biasing said control bail means to said position of rest, and being tensioned in said first and second control positions of said control bail means.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 7, wherein said first and second control levers have hub portions, and said first and second margin stops have fixed first and second pivots located in said hub portions; and wherein said first and second springs have portions would on said hub portions, and first and second pairs of legs; wherein said first and second margin stops include abutment studs located between said first and second pairs of legs, respectively, and wherein said control levers include first and second abutment studs located between said first and second pairs of legs, respectively, so that said first and second control levers assume a central position located on opposite sides of said elongated bail portion.

Margin stop arrangement asclaimed in claim 1, wherein said control bail means includes a bail having said elongated bail portion, arm portions, and journal end portions mounting said bail for turning movement about said axis, and actuating means secured to one of said journal end portions for angular movement with said bail, and actuating said first and second function performing means in said first and second control positions of said control bail means.
13. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 12, wherein said actuating means includes an actuating lever secured to said journal end portion for angular movement therewith about said axis, and having a free end carrying a pin means; wherein said first function performing means include a first link having a first slot in which said pin means is located; and wherein said second function performing means includes a second link having a second slot in which said pin means is located so that said actuating means can actuate one of said function performing means through the respective link when said pin means abuts one end of the respective slot, while the respective other function performing means is not actuated due to movement of said pin means in the respective other slot.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 13 wherein in said position of rest, said pin means is located at one end of said first slot, and at the center of said second slot so that in said first control position of said control bail means, said first function performing means is operated and said second function performing means is not operated, and so that in said second control position of said control bail means, said second function performing means is operated and said first function performing means is not operated.
15. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 12, wherein said second function performing means include drive means for moving said carriage in said return direction; wherein said actuating means include an actuating lever secured to said journal end portion for angular movement therewith about said axis and having an end formed with a slanted guide face; wherein said carriage has a main abutment engaging said first and secone control means in said first and second actuating positions, and another abutment for engaging said slanted guide face of said actuating lever if said second margin stop is inactivated whereby said control bail means is turned to said second control position for actuating said second function performing means, said second function performing means stopping said drive means when actuated by said control bail means in said second control position.

Claims (15)

1. Function controlling margin stop arrangement, comprising a margin stop rail; a first margin stop and a second margin stop adjustably mounted on said margin stop rail and being associated with the end and the beginning of a typed line, respectively; control bail means mounted for angular movement between at least one first control position, at least one second control position, and an intermediate position of rest, about an axis parallel with said margin stop rail, and including an elongated bail portion parallel to said axis and extending to said first and second margin stops; biasing means for holding said control bail means in said position of rest, and including first and second control means movably mounted on said first and second margin stops, respectively, and engaging said bail portion from opposite sides; a typewriter carriage mounted for movement parallel to said margin stop rail in a writing direction to a first actuating position engaging and displacing said first control means so that said control bail means is shifted to said first control position, and also movable in a return direction to a second actuating position engaging and displacing said second control means so that said control bail means is shifted to said second control position; and first and second function performing means actuated by said control bail means in said first and second control positions, respectively, to perform first and second functions, respectively, required at the end and the beginning of a typed line.
2. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first function performing means include signalling means for acoustically indicating the approaching end of a typed line.
3. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, comprising manually operated typewriter keys; and wherein said first function performing means include locking means for locking said typewriter keys in a position of rest.
4. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first function performing means include signalling means for acoustically indicating the approaching end of a typed line, and comprising manually operated typewriter keys; and wherein said first function performing means include locking means for locking said typewriter keys in a position of rest.
5. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, further comprising drive means for returning said carriage to said second actuating position; and a carriage return key for actuating said drive means; and wherein said second function performing means include means for rendering said drive means inactive so that said carriage stops in said second actuating position after a return movement.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 5, wherein said drive means include a clutch biased to an engaged position in which said carriage is driven in said return direction; and wherein said inactive rendering means of said second function performing means cause disengagement of said clutch when actuated by said control bail means in said second control position.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first and second control means include first and second control levers, respectively, mounted on said first and second margin stops, respectively, for angular movement and wherein said biasing means include first and second springs mounted on said first and second margin stops respectively, for holding said first and second control levers on opposite sides of said elongated bail portion so that said control bail means are biased from said first and second control positions to said position of rest.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 7, comprising a supporting frame having a fixed pin, and bearings mounted on said frame along said axis; wherein said control bail means include journal end portions mounted in said bearings for angular movement; and wherein said biasing means include spring means wound on at least one of said journal end portions and engaging said elongated bail portion and said pin for holding said control bail means in said intermediate position of rest.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 7, comprising a supporting frame; and bearings mounted on said frame along said axis; wherein said control bail means include journal end portions mounted in said bearings for angular movement so that said control bail means can turn between said first and second control positions; and wherein said biasing means includes spring means abutting said frame and said control bail means for resiliently biasing said control bail means to said position of rest, and being tensioned in said first and second control positions of said control bail means.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 7, wherein said first and second control levers have hub portions, and said first and second margin stops have fixed first and second pivots located in said hub portions; and wherein said first and second springs have portions would on said hub portions, and first and second pairs of legs; wherein said first and second margin stops include abutment studs located between said first and second pairs of legs, respectively, and wherein said control levers include first and second abutment studs located between said first and second pairs of legs, respectively, so that said first and second control levers assume a central position located on opposite sides of Said elongated bail portion.
11. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 7, wherein said first and second springs connect said first and second margin stops with said first and second control levers, respectively, so that said first and second control levers are resiliently held in a central position located on opposite sides of said elongated bail portion, and so that said first and second springs oppose movement of said first and second control levers out of said central position, and movement of said control bail means out of said position of rest.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control bail means includes a bail having said elongated bail portion, arm portions, and journal end portions mounting said bail for turning movement about said axis, and actuating means secured to one of said journal end portions for angular movement with said bail, and actuating said first and second function performing means in said first and second control positions of said control bail means.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 12, wherein said actuating means includes an actuating lever secured to said journal end portion for angular movement therewith about said axis, and having a free end carrying a pin means; wherein said first function performing means include a first link having a first slot in which said pin means is located; and wherein said second function performing means includes a second link having a second slot in which said pin means is located so that said actuating means can actuate one of said function performing means through the respective link when said pin means abuts one end of the respective slot, while the respective other function performing means is not actuated due to movement of said pin means in the respective other slot.

Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 13 wherein in said position of rest, said pin means is located at one end of said first slot, and at the center of said second slot so that in said first control position of said control bail means, said first function performing means is operated and said second function performing means is not operated, and so that in said second control position of said control bail means, said second function performing means is operated and said first function performing means is not operated.
15. Margin stop arrangement as claimed in claim 12, wherein said second function performing means include drive means for moving said carriage in said return direction; wherein said actuating means include an actuating lever secured to said journal end portion for angular movement therewith about said axis and having an end formed with a slanted guide face; wherein said carriage has a main abutment engaging said first and secone control means in said first and second actuating positions, and another abutment for engaging said slanted guide face of said actuating lever if said second margin stop is inactivated whereby said control bail means is turned to said second control position for actuating said second function performing means, said second function performing means stopping said drive means when actuated by said control bail means in said second control position.
