MACHINE FOR WRAP FORMING METAL STRIP AS IT IS UNCOILED This invention relates to a machine for wrap forming strip by a processor roll as the strip is uncoiled for further processing, which machine is preferably succeeded by a straightening machine.
When metal strip has been made from an ingot byhot rolling, the strip is coiled and in the form of a coil is stored and transported until it is processed further. These coils age in storage so that the uncoiling of the strip results in a formation of kinks, which can be eliminated only in part even by the application of high straightening pressures in the usually succeeding straightening machine and which adversely affect the processing of the strip. Pressure rolls consisting of socalled processor rolls have been engaged with the coiled strip as the same is uncoiled. These known arrangements, however, can be operated only with difficulty, particularly as the leading end of the strip is threaded through the arrangement and as the plant is started and give only inadequate results.
As is apparent from the drawing, the uncoiling reel 1 carrying a coil of strip 2 is succeeded by a processor roll 3, which is mounted on a secondary pivoted lever 4. The latter is controlled by a hydraulic actuator 5. The secondary pivoted lever 4 is mounted on a primary pivoted lever 6, which is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder 7. The primary pivoted lever 6 carries at one end a bending roll 8, which is pivotally movable by the primary pivoted lever 6. A deflecting wedge 9 is pivoted on the axis of the bending roll and is pivotally movable by a hydraulic actuator 11 and a wedge-operating lever 10. As is apparent from FIG. 1 the wedge 9 guides the leading end of the strip 12 between the raised processor roll 3 and bending roll 8 as the uncoiling from the coil 2 begins. Thereafter, the wedge 9 is swung off the coil 2 by means of the primary rocker lever 6 and additionally by means of the actuator 11.
It is an object of the invention to prevent a formation of kinks in strip as it is uncoiled. The machine providedthe processor roll is mounted on a controllable secondary pivoted lever, which is mounted on a primary controlled pivoted lever to enable an adjustment of the processor roll to the coil as the uncoiling of the strip begins and as the uncoiling is continued withthe diameter of the coil decreasing. This arrangement enables an adjustment of the processor roll in dependence on the diameter of the coil and the width and thickness of the strip so as to meet individual requirements.
Specifically, the primary pivoted lever is pivotally movable by means of a hydraulic or pneumatic actuator and carries a bending roller, which is disposed on the pay-off side of the coil of strip and carries a bending roll and the secondary pivoted leverprovided with the processor roll, and the secondary pivoted lever is pivotally movable by a hydraulic or pneumatic actuator and pivoted to the primary pivoted lever at one end thereof, the processor roll is carried by said secondary pivoted lever at one end thereof and the actuator is connected to the secondary pivoted lever at the other end thereof.
A deflecting wedge is disposed between the processor roll and bending roll and is pivoted on the axis of the bending roll and pivotally movable by a wedgeoperating lever, which is connected between the wedge and a further hydraulic or pneumatic actuator. In this way, the starting of the uncoiling, specifically, the threading of the leading end of the strip into the plant for further processing, is greatly facilitated.
Further details of the machine according to the invention will be described hereinafter with reference to the drawing, in which FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic view showing in elevation the machine as the uncoiling of the strip from the reel begins.
FIG. 2 is a diagrammatic view showing in elevation the machine of FIG. 1 during the uncoiling of the'strip from the reel, and
FIG. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing in elevation the machine of FIGS. 1 and 2 when the strip has been completely uncoiled from the reel.
At a point preceding the processor roll 3, the coil of strip 2 is engaged by a pressure roll 13, which is raised to the position'shown in FIG. 2 when the uncoiled strip 12 has been threaded between the feed rolls 14, which are preceded by an entering guide 15 and succeeded by a straightening machine 16 whereas the processor roll 3 and bending roll 8 have been pivotally moved to the position shown in FIG. 2. The pressure roll 13, the processor roll 3, the bending roll 8, the feed rolls l4, and the straightening rolls 16 are driven so that the total tensile load is distributed even in the case of relatively large coils of strip.
FIG. 1 shows the machine in position when the uncoiling of the strip begins. FIG. 2 shows the position as the uncoiling is continued. FIG. 3 shows the position assumed when the strip has been completely uncoiled.
A controlled pressure is applicable to the hydraulic or pneumatic actuator 5, which serves to impart a pivotal movement to the secondary pivoted lever 4 carrying the processor roll 3 so as to enable an adaptation to the properties of the strip as the same is threaded.
A controlled pressure is also applicable to the hydraulic or pneumatic actuator 7 for imparting a pivotal movement to the primary pivoted lever 6, to which the lever 4'is pivoted. The pressure applied to the actuator 7 can be controlled to change the contact pressure between the processor roll 3 and the coil of strip 2 in operative position in dependence on the dimensions and properties of the strip.
Further, the action of the hydraulic or pneumatic actuator 7 to impart a pivotal movement to the primary pivoted lever 6 and to the lever 4 pivoted thereto is adjustable even when a constant pressure is applied by the processor roll 3 to the decreasing coil of strip 2. This action of the actuator 7 can be adjusted by a control of the rate at which oil is supplied thereto if the actuator 7 is a hydraulic actuator.
