Description

, UNITED A'Simfrirs PlrrIfJNT Ormea QWILLIAM L.- MGDOWELL', OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
1MPuovslvualxrr IN s T'ovEs.
Specification forming part of Letters'Patent No. 38,318, dated eprilQ, 18.63.
1'0 all whom itu-may concern: v'
NELL, ofthe city of Philadelphia, in the `State, of Pennsylvania, have invented a new anduseful Improvement .in Stoves; and l do herebydeclare lthat the following is a full, cleanand exact description. of the constructionV and operation of the. same, reference b eing had to Athe accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Fi'gulel is a central vertical section of 'ther' lower portion of a.`common cylindrical coal- .s tovehavin g my improvement applied thereto, -an'dFig 2 a' plan view vof the supplementary Y top plate of the base of the same, like letters indicating the same partswhen in both -figures. y In nearly all the stoves in common use, es-
pecially those having cast-iron lire-boxes or cylinders, the heat is permitted to radiate horizontally, and, the. said cylinders I being generally kept red-hot, there is consequently` danger of theircharring or settingjtireltd ones clothing or any other combustible subout preventing the required diffusion of the,
. radiating heat through the air around the stoveis the object of my invention.
It consists, substantially as hereinafterde.
scribed and specied, in the employment of a perforated supplementary top plate, lin connection with or at a short distance above -theusual top plate of the base of a stove, so that it shall serve the purpose of supporting a ventilating or skeleton fender around near the outer side of the fire cylinder or box, and .at the same time permit the fresh air to pass upward through it and the space around be- 'tweenI the said lire cylinder or box and the fender.,
My invention also consists, substantially as hereinafter described and specified,'in making the fender of a series of deilectors consisting of short hollow frustums of cones, or other suitable forms, of sheet metal, and arranging them around the outer side of the fire'cylinderor box seas to be supported together upon the said perforated supplementary top jplate of the base, leaving sufficient spaces between the said deflectors and between the latter'and the stovefo'r the hot air to Vpass lob- `.liqucly outward and upward from the cylinder Beit known that I, WILLIAM LsMcDovwy v The base and fire-box of Athe stove may be of any of the usual forms. The supplementary plate C has aseries of holes or openings,
c c', through it for the upward passageof fresh air and a larger opening In lts middle for .the reception of the lowerend of the cylin-f der orr fire-box A,fthe latter, together with the plate C, being supported by the usual top 4plate, of the base, and the 'said plate 'c' being y castso as tohave suitably projecting or groovcd portions to adapt it for fitting firmly upon the t base B and for receiving and supporting the skeleton fender upon it, and at the same time v i vallowing the fresh air to pass upward through its openings' c', as indicated bythe arrows 1 1 y ,in Fig. 1. stance 1n lts vicinity. The stoves used in rail .The deflecting-fender consists of a `series ofA sheet-metal plates, D D'vD2 D9, cut to such widths, lengths, and bent into 'suchlforms as will permit them to overlap each other about an inch, (more or less', leaving spaces e. e between them when the said plates are arranged .and supported around the cylinder or fire-box,
substantially as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom` deflectin gplate, D, fits closely down 'upon the.
perforated. supplementary top plate, c', while each of the other deflecting-plates rests upon brackets fff, which are fixedto the respective plate beneath it, as seen in the saine figure.
In the operation of this invention it will -be seen that, the cylinder or re-box being hot, fresh air will enter the'openings -c' c of the plate G, and, passing upward, will become warmed and escape obliquely upward and outward through the several spaces e e between thedeecting-plates D D, and also, in part,
through the top space, er', as indicated by the ff arrows 2 2 2 2 in Fig. l, and that consequelltly all direct horizontal radiation of heat from the lire box or-cylinder will be prevented, andalso a perfect guard afforded against all danger of ones clothes or other combustible artii cles in the'vicinity'coming in contact with or of being scorched.- or inilamed by the heat thereof. y
The construction and arrangement are simple, cheap, and easily applicable to any of the around the stove.
Having thus fully described my improvement and pointed out its utility, what I claim as new therein of my'invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent'7 isf- 1.l The employment of wpe'rfomted supple.-
l'nentary top plete, c', iu combination ,with the usual top plate of the base of a stove, substaniially in the manner describedffor the purposes specified.
2. The employment of a series of deflectmgplates, D D' D2 D3, arranged and supported around the cylinder or {ire-box of e stove, so as tovoperate inthe manner described, for the vpurposes Specified.
WM. L. MCDOWELL.
