Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Brion,
JOHN B. HUTOHINSON, OF PENNS GROVE, NEW JERSEY.
WAGCN STANDARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.383,055, dated May 15, 1888.
Application filed December 15, 1887. Serial No. 257,953. (No model.)
T0 00% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. HUTCHINSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Penns Grove, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon- Standards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifica tion, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the front axle and bolster of a wagon provided with my improved standard. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the rear axle provided with the standard. Fig. 3 is a similar view of one end of the axle or bolster, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the standard detached.
The same numerals of reference indicate the same or corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to detachable stakes or standards for wagons; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a standard having a flanged box or socket at its lower end, which may be fitted and secured upon the end of the bolster or axle, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the front axle, which may be of any suitable construction and to which the sand-board 2 is secured. This sandboard is preferably of iron or steel, although it may be made of any other desirable material, and the bolster 3, which is likewise preferably of iron, although capable of being made from any other material, is pivoted upon the top of the sand-board by the king-bolt 4. The ends of the bolster are laterally extended, as shown at 5, and are formed with longitudinal notches or open slots 6 in the ends of the extended portions, and with longitudinal slots 7 in a line with the open slots or notches, and the ends of the bolster 8 of the rear axle, 9, are shaped similarly to the ends of the front bolster, and are provided with the same open slots or notches and with the slots.
The standards 10, which, like the bolsters, are preferably made of iron or other metal, are formed with sockets or boxes 11, open at the ends and fitting upon the ends of the bolsters, and these boxes are formed in their sides with perforations 12, registering with each other and with the notches and slots in the ends of the bolsters, so that bolts 13, provided with suitable nuts, 14, may be inserted through the perforations and through the notches and slots, securing the standards to the ends of the bolsters.
By having the slots and notches the standards may be laterally adjusted upon the bolsters, so that they may be made to fit boxes of various widths within the limits of the corn bined lengths of the slots, which, however, may be made of any length desired, and this lateral adjustment of the standards may also be desirable and convenient when. the wagonbox is removed and the load is placed directly upon the bolsters, as'the adjustment will admit of the load being securely clamped without any liability to play by the standards being adjusted to bear tightly against the sides of the same. i
The standards may easily and conveniently be removed from the ends of the bolsters, it being only necessary to remove the innerbolts which pass through the slots, when by loosening the bolts in the outer perforations which pass through the notches the standards may be removed by sliding the outer bolts out of the notches in sliding the boxes or sockets of the standards off from the ends of the bolster.
It follows that the bolsters may be of any desired material and construct-ion, and that the standards may be either entirely of metal or of wood, provided with metallic lilanges at the sides of the lower ends.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of a bolster having its ends extended and formed with open slots in its outer ends and with longitudinal slots parallel or in a line with the open slots, with standards provided with downwardly-projecting flanges or lips at the sides of their lower ends, formed with perforations which register with the slots, bolts, and nuts, whereby the standards are rendered removable as well as laterally adjustable, as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. HUTOHINSON.

AUGUST PETERSON.
