Abstract

A golfing accessory for removable attachment to the brim of a golfer''s cap which includes in combination a clamping member comprising a unitary member having two parallel flat sides of different lengths connected by a bent U-shaped portion. The two flat sides are the parts of the accessory that are adapted to receive the brim of the golfer''s cap therebetween. A one-piece wire member is provided which has first and second end portions secured to the bent portion of the clamping member and these two end portions extend outwardly to an intermediate portion of the wire member which is bent into a closed loop. The first and second portions of the wire member preferably extend at an acute angle to the sides of the clamping member so as to appropriately position the closed loop in the line of vision of a golfer wearing the cap so that the line of sight of the golfer goes through the closed loop to view a golf ball on a tee. In order to make the best use of the golfing accessory, it is desirable that the golfer''s line of vision not vary from that just described throughout the back-swing and at least through impact of a golf club with the golf ball.

The two flat sides are the parts of the accessory that are adapted to receive the brim of the golfers cap therebetween. A one-piece wire member is provided which has first and second end portions secured to the bent portion of the clamping member and these two end portions extend outwardly to an intermediate portion of the wire memher which is bent into a closed loop. The first and second portions of the wire member preferably extend at an acute angle to the sides of the clamping member so as to appropriately position the closed loop in the line of vision of a golfer wearing the cap so that the line of sight of the golfer goes through the closed loop to view a golf ball on a tee. In order to make the best use of the golfing accessory, it is desirable that the golfers line of vision not vary from that just described throughout the back-swing and at least through impact of a golf club with the golf ball.

SHEET 1 OF 2 FIG PATENIED SHEEI 2 BF 2 Fla 4 GOLFING ACCESSORY The present invention relates in general to a golfing accessory and more particularly to such a device which is attachable to the brim or visor of a golfers hat or cap and which can be conveniently moved on the visor to different positions. The purpose of the accessory is to improve the golfers swing by assisting him in maintaining his head in a relatively fixed position throughout most of the swing.

One of the major difficulties in becoming proficient at the game of golf is the inability of the player to keep his head still with his eye on the ball during his backswing and also at least through impact of the golf club with the ball.

Prior art devices have made attempts at helping the golfer solve the above problems without complete success. Examples of the prior art are found in US. Pat. Nos. 1,169,188 and 3,109,654.

The present device is an improvement on such devices in that it is easily adjustable on the visor of a cap so it can be easily used by rightor left-handed golfers. The disclosed device also provides a closed loop for the golfer to sight the ball through and the closed loop is connected to the cap by way of a wire member which can be bent by the golfer to easily adjust the position of the loop.

Other objects and a fuller understanding of this invention may be had by referring to the following description and claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. I is a view illustrating a golfer having the accessory of the present invention connected to the brim of his cap;

FIG. 2 shows the accessory secured to the brim of the golfers cap and taken in the direction of the view of the golfer and illustrating a golf ball within the confines of the closed loop of the accessory;

FIG. 3 is a plan view of the accessory of the present invention;

FIG. 4 is a view taken generally along the line 44 of FIG. 3; and

FIG. 5 is a view taken in the same direction as FIG. 4 but showing the wire member bent so as to adjust the closed loop to the proper position.

The golfing accessory of the present invention is best understood by reviewing all five figures of the drawings and it is shown in FIG. 1, identified generally by the reference numeral 20, attached to the brim 24 of a cap 22 worn by a golfer 26. As will be seen in FIG. 1, the golfer 26 is addressing a golf ball 29 which is teed up on a tee. A golf club 27 is held by the golfer.

The accessory includes, as best seen in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, a clamping member 34 which comprises a member having a first flatside 37 and a second flat side 38 spaced therefrom and extending substantially parallel thereto. The first and second flat sides are constructed of one member and are integrally connected together at one end by a bent portion 41 which forms the clamping member into a generally a U-shape as seen in FIGS. 4 and 5. The first flat side 37 is somewhat longer than the second flat side as best seen in FIG. 3, and the flat sides are spaced apart a distance which is sufficient to receive the brim 24 of the cap 22 therebetween. The clamping member is preferably made of a metal which is somewhat resilient in the sense that it will yieldingly permit the

37 and 38 to be bent apart, yet the flat sides will tend to come together to resiliently hold the brim of the cap therebetween.

A one-piece wire member 44 is included in the accessory-and has first and second end portions 46 and 47, respectively, and an intermediate portion therebetween. Means are provided for fixedly securing the first and second end portions 46 and 47 of the wire member within opposite sides of the confines of tee bent portion 41 as shown. The means for holding the end portions 46 and 47 in these positions may be any satisfactory means such as by spot welding or similar methods.

The first and second end portions 46 and 47 extend outwardly from the clamping member 34 to the intermediate portion 50 which intermediate portion is bent into a closed loop. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that this closed loop is formed before the end portions 46 and 47 are fixedly secured to the clamping member 34. The outwardly extending first and second end portions of the wire member are preferably bent into the position shown in FIG. 5 by the user of the device so that these end portions extend at an acute angle to the direction of the first and second

The wire member 44 is constructed of a metal preferably, so that it is sufficiently flexible that it can be bent by hand to adjust the acute angle referred to above and it is sufficiently rigid to remain in the adjusted position after being bent. FIG. 2 illustrates in the dotted positions, various positions to which the clamping member 34 may be moved on the brim of the cap 22.

In order to utilize this device of the present invention, it is only necessary that the clamping member 34 be secured to the brim of the cap 22 in the manner shown in FIG. 2, preferably after having been bent into the form shown in FIG. 5. The golfer may bend the wire member 44 to varying degrees thereafter in order to accommodate the device to his particular requirements. In the event the golfer is a right-handed golfer, it is preferred that the accessory be positioned as shown in FIG. 2, and for left-handed golfers, it is preferred that the accessory be positioned to the opposite side of the brim to the extreme dotted position on the right shown in FIG. 2. It is only necessary then to address the ball as shown in FIG. 1 while viewing the golf ball 29 through the closed loop of the intermediate portion 50. It is then necessary to move the golf club 27 through the normal backswing while still viewing the golf ball as aforementioned and the club is then brought through impact with the golf ball 29. It is desirable in utilizing the device that the golf ball always be kept in view through the closed loop of the intermediate portion. This will assure that the head is maintained in one position throughout the backswing and at least through impact of the golf club with the golf ball.

It will, therefore, be apparent that a golfing accessory has been provided for improving the golf swing of a golfer which can be easily adjusted on the visor of the golfers cap and which additionally provides a closed loop for citing or viewing the golf ball and which is constructed in such a manner that various minor adjustments can be made by actual bending of the device to better fit the needs of a given golfer.

Although this invention has been described in its preferred form with a'certain degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination'and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

What is claimed is:

l. A sighting device for aiding a golfer to maintain his head rigid while addressing a golf ball, said sighting device being adapted for detachable mounting on the brim of a headpiece, such as a hat, cap, or the like, worn by the golfer, said sighting device comprising a mounting member for engaging and gripping the brim of a headpiece worn by the golfer, said mounting member comprising a flat, unitary body member having two flat, substantially parallel, spaced-apart sides joined together at one end by a base member and being generally U-shaped, said sides being resilient vis-a-vis each other and about said base and being spaced apart sufficient to receive and resiliently engage and grip the brim of the golfers headpiece to detachably mount said device thereon, one side of said mounting member being of greater length than the other, whereby to facilitate spreading of the sides to engage over the brim by engaging the longer side with the brim first and using such engagement to guide and spread the opening between the sides to receive the brim more easily, said sighting device also including a continuous bent and shaped wire member defining a sighting portion and having a loop defining a sight means at one end and spaced apart leg portion joined to said mounting member and extending outwardly from adjacent said base thereof, said leg portions being spaced apart sufficient to resist bending of said wire member and sighting portion laterally, said wire member being sufficiently flexible to permit bending thereof about axes substantially parallel with said base to adjust the position of said loop to provide a line of sight when said device is mounted on the brim of a golfers headpiece, from the eye of the golfer through said loop to the golf ball being addressed, and said wire member being sufficiently rigid to remain in an adjusted position until further adjustment by the user thereof.

Claims

1. A sighting device for aiding a golfer to maintain his head rigid while addressing a golf ball, said sighting device being adapted for detachable mounting on the brim of a headpiece, such as a hat, cap, or the like, worn by the golfer, said sighting device comprising a mounting member for engaging and gripping the brim of a headpiece worn by the golfer, said mounting member comprising a flat, unitary body member having two flat, substantially parallel, spaced-apart sides joined together at one end by a base member and being generally U-shaped, said sides being resilient vis-a-vis each other and about said base and being spaced apart sufficient to receive and resiliently engage and grip the brim of the golfer''s headpiece to detachably mount said device thereon, one side of said mounting member being of greater length than the other, whereby to facilitate spreading of the sides to engage over the brim by engaging the longer side with the brim first and using such engagement to guide and spread the opening between the sides to receive the brim more easily, said sighting device also including a continuous bent and shaped wire member defining a sighting portion and having a loop defining a sight means at one end and spaced apart leg portion joined to said mounting member and extending outwardly from adjacent said base thereof, said leg portions being spaced apart sufficient to resist bending of said wire member and sighting portion laterally, said wire member being sufficiently flexible to permit bending thereof about axes substantially parallel with said base to adjust the position of said loop to provide a line of sight when said device is mounted on the brim of a golfer''s headpiece, from the eye of the golfer through said loop to the golf ball being addressed, and said wire member being sufficiently rigid to remain in an adjusted position until further adjustment by the user thereof.
