Abstract

An automatic timer for a gas range control arm which replaces the conventional range knob on the outside of the range. The arm is employed to turn on the range and set its temperature to the desired level. Timer mechanism is employed to turn off the range automatically by means of the arm after a desired time interval has elapsed.

As distinguished from timers for the control of remote valves in a burner system, as disclosed for example in US. Pat. No. 2,019,008, the instant timing mechanism is in direct control of lever arm which replaces the conventional burner control knob. The mechanism includes a timer clock which actuates through appropriate connecting elements the arm to turn off the burner automatically after a predetermined time interval.
One object of the invention is to provide a new and improved timing device for controlling a gas range and the like.
Other objects and advantages of the invention may be appreciated on reading the following description of one embodiment thereof which is taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view and taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is an elevation view with parts broken away and taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to FIG. 1 there is shown a gas range having burner 12 to be controlled by temperature-timer generally indicated at 14.
The temperature-timer 14 comprises coupling member 16 to which stem 18 is pinned for opening and closing a valve (not shown) to supply gas to the burner 12. The other end of the coupling member 16 and integral with it is ratchet wheel 20. Extending radially and fixed to the coupling member 16 is temperature lever 22 having finger piece 24.
As seen in FIG. 3, the coupling 16, ratchet wheel 20 and lever 22 are normally held in the vertical or off position against stop 26 by means of a spiral spring 28 the fixed end of which is anchored to the stop 26. The free end of the spiral spring 28 is attached to the lever 22 at point 30 proximate the member 16. The operative position of the lever 22 at med, hi or at some intermediate point is held by spring-biased pawl 32.
Mounted in housing 34 is timer motor 36 controlled by knob 38 and having actuating arm 40. Trigger 42 extends rearwardly from the arm 40 to engage the pawl 32.
In operation the temperature lever 22 is grasped by the finger piece 24 and turned clockwise to the med or hi position opening the gas valve through the stem 18 and the coupling member 16 where it is held by the pawl 32 engaging ratchet wheel 20. The timer knob 38 is then rotated for the desired time interval of range operation.
When the timer knob 38 returns to 0 position the actuating arm 40 through trigger 42 disengages the pawl 32 from the ratchet wheel 20 as seen in dot-dash position in FIG. 3. Spring 28 then returns the temperature lever 22 to the vertical or off position against stop 26 to shut off the gas valve.
Various modifications of the timer may be effected by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope and principle of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A gas range timer mechanism comprising a rotat ably mounted, gas control lever arm,a shaft for variably controlling the flow of gas to a burner, a coupling member on which said arm is mounted connected to said shaft, a ratchet wheel mounted adjacent said arm on said member, a stop for said arm, a spring connected to said stop and said arm, a pawl releasably engaging said ratchet wheel, and a timer mechanism in control of said pawl for releasing the arm at the expiration of a desired time interval.
2. A gas range timer mechanism as defined in claim 1 wherein said timer mechanism includes a trigger adapted to engage said pawl to release said ratchet whereupon said arm is returned to of position on the expiration of said interval.

Claims (2)

1. A gas range timer mechanism comprising a rotatably mounted, gas control lever arm, a shaft for variably controlling the flow of gas to a burner, a coupling member on which said arm is mounted connected to said shaft, a ratchet wheel mounted adjacent said arm on said member, a stop for said arm, a spring connected to said stop and said arm, a pawl releasably engaging said ratchet wheel, and a timer mechanism in control of said pawl for releasing the arm at the expiration of a desired time interval.
2. A gas range timer mechanism as defined in claim 1 wherein said timer mechanism includes a trigger adapted to engage said pawl to release said ratchet whereupon said arm is returned to ''''off'''' position on the expiration of said interval.
