Abstract

The coke guide car has a body portion mounted on wheels movable along rails and the coke guide car is movable longitudinally along the coke side of a coke oven battery. Suitable drive means are provided to propel the coke guide car and position the coke guide car adjacent a selected coke oven chamber. A coke guide is mounted on the body portion adjacent one end thereof and is movable longitudinally toward and away from the coke oven chamber. A vertical column is mounted on the coke guide car body portion in spaced relation to the coke guide. Coke oven door jamb cleaning apparatus and coke oven door lifting apparatus are mounted on the vertical column and position either the jamb cleaning apparatus or the coke oven door lifting device in overlying relation with a preselected coke oven chamber. Other drive means are provided to move the vertical column toward and away from the coke oven chamber to thereby selectively position either the coke oven door lifting device in abutting operative relation with the selected coke oven door or the coke oven door jamb cleaning device in operative relation with the selected coke oven door jamb. A coke oven door unlatching mechanism is Positioned on the vertical column and is arranged to unlatch the coke oven door prior to lifting and removing the coke oven door. A door cleaning device is positioned on the coke guide car adjacent the vertical column and is arranged to move toward and away from the vertical column to clean the coke oven door supported on the door lifting device. An operator''s compartment is positioned between the coke guide and the vertical column so that the operator may observe both the coke guide and the apparatus on the vertical column.

Cl. 202-241 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The coke guide car has a body portion mounted on wheels movable along rails and the coke guide car is movable longitudinally along the coke side of a coke oven battery. Suitable drive means are provided to propel the coke guide car and position the coke guide car adjacent a selected coke oven chamber. A coke guide is mounted on the body portion adjacent one end thereof and is movable longitudinally toward and away from the coke oven chamber. A vertical column is mounted on the coke guide car body portion in spaced relation to the coke guide. Coke oven door jamb cleaning apparatus and coke oven door lifting apparatus are mounted on the vertical column in angular relation to each other. Drive means are provided to rotate the vertical column and position either the jamb cleaning apparatus or the coke oven door lifting device in overlying relation with a preselected coke oven chamber. Other drive means are provided to move the vertical column toward and away from the coke oven chamber to thereby selectively position either the coke oven door lifting device in abutting operative relation with the selected coke oven door or the coke oven door jamb cleaning device in operative relation with the selected coke oven door jamb. A coke oven door unlatching mechanism is positioned on the vertical column and is arranged to unlatch the coke oven door prior to lifting and removing the coke oven door. A door cleaning device is positioned on the coke guide car adjacent the vertical column and is arranged to move toward and away from the vertical column to clean the coke oven door supported on the door lifting device. An operators compartment is positioned between the coke guide and the vertical column so that the operator may observe both the coke guide and the apparatus on the vertical column.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the invention This invention relates to a coke guide car and more particularly to a coke guide car having the coke guide and coke oven door servicing apparatus positioned thereon.
2. Description of the prior art SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is directed primarily to improvements in coke guide cars in which the coke guide is mounted on the coke guide car body portion adjacent one end and is movable transversely along the coke guide car toward and away from the coke oven chambers of the coke oven battery. A vertical column is mounted on the coke guide car body portion in spaced relation to the coke guide and has a coke oven jamb cleaning device and a coke oven door lifting device mounted thereon in angular relation to each other. Drive means is provided to rotate the vertical column to position either the jamb cleaning device or the coke oven door cleaning device in overlying relation with a preselected coke oven chamber. Ameans is also provided to move the vertical column toward and away from the preselected coke oven jamb to selectively position the coke oven door lifting device in operative relation with the selected coke oven door and to position the jarnb cleaning device in operative relation with a selected coke oven door jamb.
A coke oven door cleaning device is mounted on the coke guide car body portion and is movable toward and away from the vertical column and is operable to move into abutting relation with a coke oven door that is supported on the vertical column by the coke oven door lifting device.
An operator's compartment is positioned between the coke guide and the vertical column so that both the coke guide and the vertical column may be observed from the operators compartment.
Accordingly, one of the principal features of this invention is to provide a relatively short and light coke guide car.
Another feature of this invention is to provide a coke guide car that includes a coke guide and coke oven door removing, cleaning apparatus and coke oven door jamb cleaning apparatus.
These and other features of this invention will be more completely disclosed and described in the following specification, the accompanying drawings and the appended claims.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a coke guide car generally designated by the numeral 10' that include a body portion or frame 12 movably supported on wheels 14. The wheels are mounted on rails 16 that extend longitudinally along the coke side of a coke oven battery generally designated by the numeral 18 in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4. The coke oven battery may be a well known horizontal coke oven battery having a plurality of transversely extending coke oven chambers 20. A gear type drive means 22 is connected to certain of the wheels 14 through shafts 24 to propel the coke guide car 10 along the rails 16. The shafts 24 are preferably connected to a differential mechanism to maintain both drive wheels in propelling relation on both of the rails 16 and equalize the difference in height of the rails.
A coke guide generally designated by the numeral 26 is formed of a pair of spaced vertical guide walls 28 and 30 and a base member 32. The base member 32 is suitably supported on channel-like supports 34 for longitudinal movement of the coke guide thereon toward and away from the coke oven chambers. A drive 36 mounted adjacent the coke guide 26 is suitably connected thereto to move the coke guide 26 on the car in a direction parallel to the direction of travel of the coke guide car 10. The drive 36 illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 3 is an electric drive having a suitable electric motor, clutch and gear connection to the coke guide. It should be understood, however, that other drive means, such as a hydraulic cylinder or the like, may be provided beneath the coke guide bottom portion '32 and employed to move the coke guide as above described. A hydraulic cylinder positioned beneath the coke guide 26 has the advantage of reducing the overall length of the coke guide car to thereby shorten the length of the coke guide car by the space required for the illustrated electric drive 36. The coke guide 26, as illustrated in FIG. 1, has a guide 38 that is supported on a protuberance 40 from the upstanding frame members 42 of the coke guide car 10.
A vertical column generally designated by the numeral 44 includes a pair of spaced vertical channel members 46 and 48 (FIGS. 3 and 4) suitably connected to each other by horizontal angles 50 adjacent the upper portion (FIG. 2.). A supporting frame 52 is movably supported on the upstanding frame 42 of the coke oven guide car and has a pair of forwardly extending arms 54 and 56. The vertical column 44 has shaft end portions 58 and 60 rotatably supported in receivers in the support frame arms 54 and 56 so that the column 44 is rotatably supported within the support frame 52. The support frame 52 together with the column 44 supported thereby is movable in a direction parallel to the axis of the coke oven chamber and has a drive means 62 (FIGS. 1 and 3). The drive means, which again is illustrated as an electric drive means, is suitably connected to the support frame 52 and moves the support frame along suitable guide means on the coke guide car upstanding frame members 42.
A jamb cleaning device 64 (FIG. 1) is secured to the vertical column 44. A door lifting mechanism 66 illustrated in FIG. 2., an unlatching mechanism 68 and apparatus 70 for swinging the door latch are secured to the rotary column 44 in angular relation to the jamb cleaning device 64. Preferably, the jamb cleaning device 64 is at a ninety degree angle to the lifting mechanism 66, door unlatching mechanism 68 and apparatus 70 for swinging the door latch. A column rotating device 72 is suitably supported from the support frame 52 and is arranged to rotate the column 44. A piston cylinder arrangement is illustrated in FIG. 2 for rotating the rotary column 44. It should be understood, however, that other suitable rotating devices may be employed.
As illustrated in the figures, an operators compartment 74 is positioned between the coke guide 26 and the rotary column 44 with the coke oven door servicing apparatus mounted thereon. It will be apparent with the operators compartment so positioned all operations performed on the coke guide car 10 can be observed by an operator in the compartment 74. Suitable control devices for the previously described drive means are installed in the operators compartment 74.
A door cleaning device 76 is positioned on the coke guide car body portion 12 adjacent to the column 44. The door cleaning device may be of conventional construction and is arranged to move toward and away from the column 44 to clean a coke oven door supported on the door lifting device 66.
The above coke guide car may be employed to open, remove and clean a coke oven door; clean the coke oven door jamb and to move a coke guide into operative position with the coking chamber for discharge of the pushed coke therethrough. The operating procedure for the coke guide car 10 is as follows. The coke guide car 10 is moved into a door lifting position and the rotary column 44 is rotated to position the door lifting apparatus 66 in overlying relation with a preselected coke oven door and the support frame 52 and column 44 are in a retracted position and aligned with the axis of the coke oven chamber to be pushed. A retracted position of the column 44 is illustrated by channels 46 and 48 in solid lines in FIG. 3. The column 44 is then moved forward to the position of the channels 46 and 48 illustrated as dash-dot-dash lines and designated by the numerals 46' and 48'. The coke oven door 78 (FIG. 2) is then unlatched by the unlatching mechanism 68 and lifted by the lifting mechanism 66. The rotary column 44 is then retracted to a retracted position as previously described. The swinging device 72 is then actuated to rotate the column 44 through a ninety degree angle to thus move the door to the left as viewed in FIG. 3. The position of the rotary column 44 is identified in FIG. 3 by the numerals 46" and 48".
The coke guide car 10 is thereafter moved relative to the coke oven battery to align the coke guide 26 with the longitudinal axis of the to be pushed coke oven chamber 20 as is illustrated in FIG. 3. Thereafter, the drive means 36 is actuated to move the coke guide 26 forwardly into operative relation with the coke oven chamber, and the coke is pushed through the coke guide 26 into a quench car 80 illustrated in FIG. 2. During the pushing operation the door cleaning device 76 is moved forward to the position indicated with solid lines in FIG. 3 to thus clean the coke oven door. The door cleaning device 76 is then retracted to the position 76' illustrated by the dash-dotdash lines in FIG. 3. After the pushing operation is complete the coke guide 26 is moved to a retracted position away from the coke oven chamber.
The coke guide car 10 is then moved relative to the coke oven battery so that the jamb cleaning device 64 may be in overlying relation with the door jamb of the previously pushed coke oven chamber. The column 44 and the support 52 are advanced until the door jamb cleaning device is in operative position to clean the coke oven door jamb. After cleaning has been completed the rotary column 44 is retracted and then rotated through ninety degrees toward the right as viewed in FIG. 3 so that the door lifting device 66 is aligned with the axis of the coke oven chamber. Thereafter the column 44 with the lifting device and the door supported thereon is advanced to the position in FIG. 3 indicated by the numerals 46' and 48'. The door is then lower and latched and the rotary column retracted.
According to the provisions of the patent statutes, I have explained the principle, preferred construction and mode of operation of my invention and have illustrated and described what I now consider to represent its best embodiments. However, I desire to have it understood that, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically illustrated and described.
I claim:
1. A coke guide car for use with a coke oven battery having a plurality of coke oven chambers comprising,
a body portion mounted on propelling means operable to propel the coke guide car longitudinally along the coke side of a coke oven battery,
coke guide apparatus mounted on said body portion adjacent one end thereof and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the coke oven chambers,
means to move said coke guide apparatus longitudinally toward and away from the coke oven chambers of said coke oven battery,
a supporting frame having a body portion and a pair of spaced forwardly extending arms,
said supporting frame mounted on said coke guide car body portion and movable toward and away from said coke oven chambers,
a vertical column mounted on said body portion in spaced relation to said coke guide apparatus,
said vertical column rotatably supported between said supporting frame forwardly extending arms,
a coke oven door jamb cleaning device mounted on said vertical column,
a coke oven door lifting device mounted on said vertical column in angular relation to said jamb cleaning device,
means to rotate said vertical column to position said door jamb cleaning device and said coke oven door lifting device in overlying relation with the door jamb of a preselected coke oven chamber, and
means to move said vertical column toward and away from said preselected coke oven chamber to selectively position said oven door lifting device in abutting relation with the coke oven door and said jamb cleaning device in abutting relation with the coke oven door jamb.
2. A coke guide car as set forth in claim 1 which includes,
a door cleaning device mounted on said coke guide car body portion,
said door cleaning device movable toward and away from said vertical column and arranged to clean a coke oven door supported on said vertical column.
3. A coke guide car as set forth in claim 2 in which said means to rotate said vertical column includes,
means to position said vertical column with a coke oven door supported thereon in overlying relation with said door cleaning device.
4. A coke guide car as set forth in claim 1 which includes,
an operator's compartment positioned adjacent to said coke guide and said vertical column so that said coke guide and said vertical column may be observed by an operator positioned in said operator compartment. 5. A coke guide car as set forth in claim 1 in which, said coke oven door jamb cleaning apparatus and said coke oven door lifting device are arranged on said vertical column at an angle of about ninety degrees to each other.
