Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS N OTT, OF EARL TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT INV COMBINED LEVER AND CRANK MOTION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3S, l 76, dated April 14, 1863.
the same time the same motion can be employed in connection with other domestic machinery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a partof this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspectivevview of its construction and operation. Fig. 2 shows one of the wire-stretching eyed and screw-cut bolts with its bar c. Fig. 3 is a view of its application over an extended field.
The object of this invention is to obviate the labor of pumping by hand to supply the demand of water for cattle or domestic purposes on the farm, and by means of a simple arrangement, at a triing cost, to keep the pump in constant motion, regulating the discharge of water or stopping it, at pleasure. My method of effecting this is to avail myself of a small stream of water, (found on almost every farm, more or less remote from the dwelling.) In this I place a water-wheel, Q, having a crankarm on one side. Near this I erect a slotted post, W, for the reception of the oscillating beam N, held by a pivot at its center in W. This beam has a projecting arm, O, and a rod, P, connecting it with the crank on the water-wheel, thus operating the beam N, giving it a rocking motion, which motion is imparted to a similar beam, I), on its pivot in the slotted post E, placed near the pump, by means of the stretchedwires L L2, attached, respectively, to the upper and lower end of the oscillating beams D N. In order to tighten the wires, one end is secured in a plug with a broad head, while the other end is affixed to the eye of the screw-bolt t, Fig. 2, and by means of a nut, c, irmly screwed up and stretched at pleasure. The wire is supported at certain intervals by means of vibrating wire links M M2, held by a pivot on a post or pole, K, as shown by Figll. Any required number of these poles and supporting links will make but a slight resistance to the power of the water-wheel, there being no friction of any account to overcome by this vibrating link arrangement, so that the stretched wires will cause both beams to oscillate in unison. To the beam D there is a rod, c, above, connected with the shaft B on the pumping rocker-crank. This shaft B has a series of holes, and passes through a slot in the arm C, by means of which the stroke of the pump can be regulated according to the supply of water demanded, or unshipped altogether, when the pump can be operated by hand by means of a rod, Y, on the same rocker-crank, to which the rod Z is suspended. The socalled rocker-crank,77 with its arms Y B,
' crosses the top of the pump in a short curve,
the bucket-rod is affixed, operating the bucketrod the same as when the common pump-handle is employed. To the lower end of the beam an abundance of water. For this purpose dog, y
horse, and water powers have been employed but when the water-power was remote from the dwelling, I am not aware that such power has been applied in the manner herein set forth.
The simplicity and comparative cheapness and eiicacy of this arrangement is practically established, and has proved highly satisfactory to myself and all who have witnessed its operation. i
I am aware that, so far as the water-wheel, oscillating beams, and connecting-rods and cranks are concerned there is no novelty; nor do I deem such as a part of my invention. What I deem novel is the arrangement and the application of these oscillating beams, connecting-wires, and the pumping or rocker shaft crank and its arms, as also the connectingarm F 5 that while the pumping is not interfered with, butter may be churned, clothes washed, &c., all by the same power and motion at one and the same time, thus affording au additional advantage of great utility on a with the arms() F, (on arm or beam D,) for Working the pump and other appliances at one and the same time, as herein specified, for the purposes mentioned.
ELIAS NOTT. Witnesses SAML. H. SIDES, E. G. GROFF.
