DIAPHRAGM-TYPE GAME CALLER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an improved game caller for use by sportsmen while hunting wild game such as turkeys. Sportsmen, particularly those hunting wild turkey, have sought for a long time an effective calling device to lure the game into the vicinity of the hunter. It is most desirable that the calling device is designed in a manner such that it can be easily operated, inexpensive to procure and convenient to handle and carry by the hunter. It is very important that the actual use of the caller does not handicap or otherwise substantially impede freedom of movement by the hunter while at the same time the calling device should not be of such a fragile nature such that it is easily damaged or broken.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved game caller for simulating sounds made by wild game which is easy to use and may be effectively operated without requiring great skill or expertise by the user.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a game caller to simulate sounds made by wild game in the form'of a device which can be held in the hand of the user and operated in a manner so as not to impede the freedom of movement.
According to the present invention, there is provided a game calling device comprising a tubular housing enclosed at one end by a wall having an opening for the escapement of air, an end cap detachably mounted onto the open end of the housing, the end cap having an opening therein, and a diaphragm assembly including a diaphragmmember operatively arranged in the end cap to define an air-receiving opening between the diaphragm and the opening in the end cap.
In the preferred form of the present invention a mounting plate is used to support the diaphragm in a manner so as to characterize the air-receiving opening asa narrow slot. The preferred form of the invention may further include a moisture absorbent pad arranged within the tubular housing, the pad having an air passageway aligned with the opening in the end wall of the housing.
These features and advantages of the present invention as well as otherswill become more apparent when the following description is read in light of the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the parts making up the game caller according to the present invention; and
currents of air from within the housing. A tubular pad' 18 is constructed to tightly pass into the housing wherein it is pushed forward until it jams against the end wall 14. When in this position, an axial extending bore 20 in the pad assumes an aligned relation with the opening 16. In the preferred form, the pad is constructed from an expanded or foamed plastic material resembling that of a natural sponge. In this form, the pad is particularly effective as a moisture absorbent member. i
An end cap 22 encloses the open end of the housing such that the wall 12 is tightly received within a rim 24 forming part of the cap 22. A semicircular opening 26 is formed in the end face surface of the cap 22. As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a circular plate 28 is provided with a semicircular opening 30 which is dimensioned so that when operatively-located against the inside surface of the end wall of the cap 22, the openings 26 and 30 may be positioned in an aligned relationship. A diaphragm 32 is glued or otherwise firmly attached to the plate 28. It is important to note that one edge of the diaphragm defines a straight and narrow slot with respect to the opening in the plate 28. This slot admits air from the mouth of the user into the interior of the housing. As this occurs, the diaphragm vibrates and changes the amount of air passing through the narrow slot and into the interior of the housing. The relative stiffness and tension on the diaphragm member are selected so that when in its assembled form, the sounds produced resemble those normally produced by wild turkeys. If preferred, different diaphragm assemblies may be used to produce other sounds which are desired for calling of wild game.
Although the invention has been shown in connection with a certain specific embodiment, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes in form and arrangement of parts may be made to suit requirements without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A diaphragm-type game caller employed to simulate sounds normally made by wild game comprising:
a tubular housing having an opening in a first end for the escapement of air from within said housing, an end cap detachably mounted onto the second end of said housing, said end cap having an opening therein for the introduction of air into said housing,
diaphragm means including a plate member supporting a diaphragm member, with said diaphragm means being'arranged by said end cap such that when operatively mounted onto said housing there is defined an air passageway by the cooperative re lation between said diaphragm member and said opening in the end cap, and
a moisture absorbent pad arranged within said housing for occupying a portion of the space enclosed by the housing, said pad including an air passageway therethrough aligned with said opening in the plate at the end of the housing.
2. A diaphragm-type game caller according to claim 1 wherein said moisture absorbent pad is further de fined as a foam plastic material.
3. A diaphragm-type game caller according to claim 2 wherein said plate member includes an opening con-. structed and arranged for at least partial alignment with respect to the opening formed in said end cap, said diaphragm member at least partially enclosing the opening in said frame.
4. A diaphragm-type game caller according to claim 3 wherein the opening in said end cap and said plate member are further defined as semicircular holes.
