To this end, the box employs parallel vertical horizontally elongated side members carrying the kerfs, and having a bottom portion formed by two mating horizontally elongated horizontal members detachably engagable in abutting coplanar relationship. Means are provided for detachable insertion between the horizontal members in the manner of an extension leaf in a table to enlarge the width of the box as described.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. I is a perspective view of my invention;
FIG. 2 is a detail view thereof;
FIG. 3 is an exploded end view of a modification thereof;
FIG. 4 is a side view thereof; and
FIG. 5 is an exploded top view of the modification of my invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring nowto FIGS. 1, 2 and 4, a miter box comprises first and second mating half sections and 12 which are mirror images of each other. Each section has a horizontally elongated vertical member 10A of 12A having saw kerfs 14, I6, 18 and 20 which are arranged in aligned pairs and a horizontally elongated horizontal member 108 or 12B. Each horizontal member 10B or 128 is secured at an edge to a bottom portion of the corresponding vertical member 10A or 12A in such manner that each section defines in vertical cross section a right angle. Kerfs l4, l6 and 18 lie in vertical planes. Kerfs 20 lie in an inclined plane.
The opposite edges of members 108 and 128 can be abutted with hooks 22 at the opposite endsof member 108 detachably engaging pins 24 at opposite ends of member 12B to form a conventional miter box wherein pairs of kerfs I4, 16 and 18 can be used in conventional manner.
However, in order to cut mitered edges on pieces of wood wider than accommodated by the width defined by interconnected members 108 and 128, I provide another flat horizontally elongated horizontal member 26 having end disposed hooks 22 and pins 24 which can be interposed between disconnected members 108 and 12B and connected thereto with abutting edges in a coplanar manner by using hooks and pins as before in the same general manner as an extension leaf is inserted in a table.
Abutting edges of members 10B and 12B can have aligned transversely extending bores 28 and fingers 30 detachablyvengagable with each other.
Member 26 can be provided with bores 28 and fingers 30 disposed transversely on opposite edges whereby more rigid interconnection is necessary.
The net result is a wider miter box. Kerfs 14, 16 and 18, when used with the wider boards accommodated by the wider box, will not produce the same angles of cut on the work as in the original miter box and in general will not be used with the wider box. However, the kerf pair using kerfs 20 is designed for use with the wider box whereby wider pieces of lumber can be mitered.
As shown in FIGS. 3 and 5, the concept described above can be extended to further variations in box width by using one or more additional members 26 interconnected as described above.
Additional pairs of kerfs 20 differing in inclined angle can be used if so desired.
While I have described my-invention with particular reference to the drawings, such is not to be considered as limiting its actual scope.
Having thus described this invention, what is asserted as new and claimed is:
l. A miter box having parallel vertical horizontally elongated side members having spaced saw kerfs arranged in aligned pairs and having a horizontal bottom portion formed by two mating horizontally elongated horizontal members detachably engagable in abutting coplanar relationship wherein means are provided for detachable insertion between said horizontal members to enlarge the width of the box.
2. The box of claim I wherein the means is a horizontally elongated horizontal element having end disposed coupling means detachably engagable with mating coupling means on the ends of said members.
3. The box of claim 2 wherein said element has on each edge transversely extending means detachably engagable with mating means transversely disposed on additional like element engagable both with one abutv ting edge of one member and an edge of another element to further enlarge the width of the box.

Claims (4)

2. The box of claim 1 wherein the means is a horizontally elongated horizontal element having end disposed coupling means detachably engagable with mating coupling means on the ends of said members.
3. The box of claim 2 wherein said element has on each edge transversely extending means detachably engagable with mating means transversely disposed on the abutting edges of said members.
4. The box of claim 3 further including at least one additional like element engagable both with one abutting edge of one member and an edge of another element to further enlarge the width of the box.
