Be it known that we, WILLIAM KOOHER and 5 the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,reference'beinghad to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, whic form a part of this specification. Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in corn-planters; and it consists in the novel constructionand arrange ment of the parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. j V
The object of our invention is to provide a corn-planterhaving peculiarly-arranged mechanism for operating the seed-slides unitedly, or through the mediumof levers independ ently, the construction thereof being simple and effective, strong and durable, easily handled, and readily understood. .We attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like'letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of our improved form of corn-planter. Fig. 2 is a sectional ele vation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the seed-boxes and its slide.
A indicates the frame, which has rearwardlyprojecting strips A, which form bearings for the main shaft or axle B. The bearing-Wheels B are mounted upon this axle, and have suitable ratchet and pawl mechanisms connected thereto, for the purposes which will be readily understood in the art. Suitable arms, 0, are hinged to the frame A, and project rea'rwardly, and are provided with seed-boxes G at their rear ends.
The seed-boxes C have enlargements'c formed with one side thereof, in which the slide 0 is mounted to open and close the seed-apertures in the bottom of theboxes,thereby regulating 50 the flow through the depending seed-chutes 0?,

inner end of the said rod bearsagainstthe coiled spring S, secured tothe'frame-work in any suitable'manner,which has a tendency to normally keep the lower end of the marker I raised from the ground, as shown in Fig. 2. When, however, the wheel F revolves, themnor end of the marker-rodis pressed upward against the action of the spring 8, so as to allow the striker f, secured to the wheel F,to 9 5 clear the saidinner end of the inarkerrod. While this operation is being accomplished "the'lower end of the marker'is depressed into the ground. After the striker f passes the m ner endof thema'rker-rod, the spring 3 im Ioc mediatelythrows the said inner end of the rod downward and the marking-point upward,and is thus held elevated until the next striker f engages with the inner end of the markingro Centrally situated upon the shaft B, adjacent to the drivers seat, is a ratchet-and-pawl 1 p, is connected to the frame-work at its forward end, and passing through the said pawl has an angular bend formed at its rear end, as fully shown in Fig. 1, as at 1). By this means the action of the said pawl Pis made uniform, and engagement thereof with the ratchetwheel is always attained.
It will be understood that slight changes in the construction of the parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the spirit and nature of our invention.
We claim--- I 1. The combination, with the frame having a shaft or axle passing therethrough, of the arms 0, connected to the frame and extending between and on the outside of the bearingwheels and carrying seed-boxes on their rear ends, the enlargement or projections formed on one side of each of the said seed-boxes, the slides working in said enlargement, the leverarms connected to said slides and projecting beyond the forward end of the said enlargement, and the toothed cam-wheels mounted upon the axle and engaging with projecting ends of the lever connected to the slides of the seed-boxes, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the main frame having an axle arranged therein, as set forth, toothed cam-wheels mounted on said axle,of the arms 0, hinged to the main frame and carrying seed-boxes on their rear ends, projections formed with one side of each seed-box, slides working in said projections and seed-box and having levers connected thereto which engage with the toothed cam-wheels on the axle, the I boots or runners in connection with the seedboxes, and the rods and levers connected to the rear portion of said boots or runners and extending to the forward part of the machine adjacent to the drivers seat, whereby said arms, seed-boxes, and runners may be independently raised from the ground, substantially as described. 7
3. The combination, with the main frame, of the arms 0, hinged thereto, carrying seed-boxes on their rear ends, the main shaft or axle carrying toothed cam-wheels, the slides for said seed-boxes automatically operated by said toothed cam-wheels, the boots or runners D, in connection with the seed-boxes, the projections d on the rear side thereof, downwardlyprojecting arms or coverers d, and the levers E, all arranged as set forth, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the shaft or axle mounted in the main frame, as set forth, of the wheels F on each end thereof, having strikers f diametrically arranged, the markerrod G, pivoted to the frame of the machine and having an inner bent end adapted to engage with the strikers f of the wheel F and the coiled spring. S, mounted in connection with the frame of the machine and bearing upon the upper part of the rod G, and acting to normally keep the markers in a raised position, substantially as described.
5. In combination with the main shaft or axle, the ratchet-wheel mounted adjacent to the drivers seat, the pawl P, adapted to engage with said ratchet-wheel,the rod 1), mounted and constructed as set forth and passing through the said pawl Pto limit its movement and cause a positive engagement of said pawl with the ratchet-wheel, the wheels F on the outer ends of the shaft, having strikers f, and the spring-actuated marker G, substantially as described.
6. In combination with the main frame, the
axle-shaft mounted therein, as set forth, having the toothed cam-wheels, the hinged arms 0, carrying seed-boxes at their rear ends, the diametrically-operated slides in engagement with said seed-boxes operated by the toothed cam-wheels, the boot or runners D, connected to the arm 0 by curved link, and the rods or levers connected to said boots or runners and extending to the forward part of the machine, whereby the said arms and boots or runners may be raised, as set forth, substantially as described.
