5 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures MOUNTING FOR IDENTIFICATION BADGE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a simple badge structure wherein the stock of parts is minimized by alternatively affixing an alligator cliptype mounting or a pin type mounting to the rear of the badge by the same mount.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a rear perspective view of an embodiment of the invention utilizing a pin type mounting;
FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the embodiment of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a section as seen at line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a section as seen at line 44 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is an elevational view of the backup plate; and
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the embodiment using an alligator clip type badge holder.
DESCRIPTION OF SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT The following disclosure is offered for public dissemination in return for the grant of a patent. Although it is detailed to ensureadequacy and aid understanding, this is not intended to prejudice that purpose of a patent which is to cover each new inventive concept therein no matter how others may later disguise it by variations in form or additions or further improvements.
The illustrated embodiment includes a body, generally 10, a backup plate, generally 11, a pin type mounting device, generally 12, and an alligator clip type mounting device, generally 13. The body has a rear face and the plate 11 has a face I6 in juxtaposition thereto. These faces are secured together with cement. In the preferred embodiment wherein'the body and the plate are formed of a common plastic the cement employed is a solvent which softens the plastic surfaces so that they cohere when the solvent dries. The backup plate has a vertical slot 17 and a horizontal slot 18 in the face 16 thereof. There are also two openings 19 in the backup plate. The body 10 has two pins 21 projecting from face 15, and also an abutment 22.
The pin type mounting device 12 comprises an elongated base 24. A pin 25 has one end pivotally secured to one end of the base at 26. The other end of the pin is releasably held by a gripper 27 (of conventional design) at the other end of the base 24. The base 24 is of a size to be received in horizontal slot 18. It has two openings 28 which are positioned to register with pins 21. This pin type mounting device is, by itself, a prior art structure which need not be specially manufactured for use as a part of the present invention.
' The alligator clip type mounting device 13 has a base 30 which is of a size to be received in vertical slot 17 of the backup plate 11. A jaw 31 is pivotally mounted on the upper end of the base 30 at 32. A spring 33 has one end pressing against the base and the other end against the jaw to urge the lower end of the jaw against the lower end of the base. The lower end of the jaw is serrated as at 34 to facilitate engaging fabric or the like. Again, this is (individually) a readily available assembly.
If a purchaser desires a quantity of pin type badges, these are made up by assembling a plurality of bodies 10, a plurality of backup plates II and a plurality of pin type mounting devices 12. The mounting devices 12 are placed over pins 21. A solvent is applied to face 15, face 16, or both. The faces are then pressed together with the base 24 trapped in slot 18. The solvent dries and the body and backup plate are cemented together to form a unitary assembly. The pins 21 will engage with openings 19 to form positive alignment of plate 11 to prevent the base 24 from moving in slot 18.
On the other hand, if a purchaser desires a number of badges with alligator clip type mounting devices thereon these are made up using a corresponding number of bodies 10, backup plates 11 and alligator clip type mounting devices 13. The same general assembly procedure is followed. The base 30 is inserted into slot 17 of the backup plate and the backup plate is then cemented to the body 10 by aligning pins 21 to openings 19. The abutment 22 is sufficiently close to the upper end of the base 30 so that the base can move upwardly only a short distance before contacting the abutment which thereafter prevents further' movement of the base. The abutment thus forms means for holding the base 30 trapped in position between the body and the backup plate.
I claim:
1. A kit for forming a badge structure comprising:
a body member forming the visible part of the badge and having a rear face;
a backup member having a face abutting the rear of the body member and secured thereto, said backup member being formed as a separate part and securable to the body member;
one of said members having crossed vertical and horizontal slots at said face thereof;
two attachment devices'for mounting the badge and being employed alternatively as an assembled part with said members;
oneof said attachment devices comprising an elongated base fitting .within the horizontal slot with two ends projecting from respective ends of the horizontal slot, a pin pivotally secured to one of said base ends, and means releasably securing the pin to the other of the base ends;
the other of the attachment devices comprising an elongated base fitting within the vertical slot and having an upper end and a lower end projecting from the respective ends of the vertical slot, a jaw connected to said upper end and extending into juxtaposition to said lower end, and spring means between the upper end and the jaw urging said juxtaposed jaw and lower end toward each other; and
means on at least one of said members to restrain, when either of the devices is assembled with the members, the base of that device in the respective slot.
2. A kit for a badge structure as set forth in claim 1, wherein said two slots are in the backup member.
3. A kit for a badge structure as set forth in claim 1, wherein the base of said one attachment device has an opening therethrough, and said restraining means includes a pin on the body member extending through said opening.
4. A kit for a badge structure as set forth in claim 3, wherein said restraining means includes a rearwardly projecting abutment on said body member and positioned to contact the upper end of the base of the other 3 4 attachment device and prevent upward movement of ing an abutment positioned to prevent movement of the that base. base of the respective attachment device beyond the 5.
