The invention constitutes an improvement over that shown in my U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,167,800 dated Feb. 2, 1965 and 3,393,4l8 dated July 23, 1968, and is directed primarily to constructions disclosed in Class 15, entitled Brush, Scrubbing and General Cleaning.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION The invention hereinafter described will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
FIG. I is a fragmentary perspective view of parts of the invention in exploded relation with respect to each other;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a sleeve mounting plate;
FIG. 3 is a-fragmentary top plan view of the same;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the assembly of the brush.
In the accompanying drawings, a rotatable shaft is indicated at and is of an elongated form of construction. At each end of the shaft 10 is carried a mounting plate 11 comprising complementary sections 12 and 13 secured together by suitable bolts 14. Longitudinally formed in the shaft 10 is a key 15 which engages in the keyway 16 formed in the mounting plates 11 so as to provide a rotatable connection between the shaft 10 and the mounting plates 11.
Mounted on the shaft 10 in spaced relation with respect to the mounting plates 11 are intermediate mounting plates 17 which are also each formed of complementary sections 18 and 19 secured together by means of bolts 20 and 24 and also keyed to the shaft 10 through the key 15 which engages in the keyway 16'.
Each of the mounting plates 17 is substantially spaced from each other in confronting relation and is connected to the adjacent mounting plate 11 by parallelly extending bars 21 which carry bristles 22 extending laterally therefrom.
Extending between the spaced mounting plates 17 is a perforated sleeve 26 formed of complementary sections as shown, and of a diameter substantially less than the diameter of the mounting plates 11. The sleeve 26 has perforations 27 formed therein to receive the ends of bristles 28, which are attached thereto in any suitable manner. The ends of the sleeve 26 are snugly received within grooves 23 formed in the hub 29 of the mounting plates 17, as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3.
While perforations 27 have been provided in the sleeve 26 for attaching the bristles in place, it is obvious that any approved or well-known arrangement for attaching the bristles to the sleeve may be used in lieu thereof.
The assembly thus described provides a rotatable brush having a reduced medial portion from which bristles extend and which provides a space intermediate the ends of the brush for the passage of projections or protuberances from the surface over which the rotating brush moves, such, for example, the protruding bumpers of automobiles. By such arrangement, the bristles of the brush are unobstructed in their extended position, to engage the surface of the automobile being washed and, in addition, serve to wash the protruding bumper or the like. I
Only so much of the invention has been described herein as is necessary to an understanding of the construction and operation of the same, reference being directed to my aforesaid patents.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, there fore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by'Letters Patent is:
1. A rotatable brush for a car washing machine including a. an elongated rotatable shaft,
b.-circular mounting plates having diameters greater than said shaft so as to extend radially therefrom, attached to said shaft for rotation therewith,
c. bristle-carrying core elements having different diameters carried by said plates for rotation therewith, and
d. means provided by certain of said plates for removably connecting said bristle-carrying core elements having different diameters to opposite sides ofsaid plates and in axial alignment to said shaft for rotation therewith.
2. A rotatable brush as defined by claim 1 wherein said circular mounting plates each provide a periphery and a center hub portion, with the periphery providing means for connecting certain of said bristle-carrying core elements thereto and with said hub portion of said certain of said circular plates providing means for connecting thereto other bristle-carrying core elements having diameters different from said certain of said bristle-carrying core elements.
3. A rotatable brush as defined by claim 1 including means for removably attaching said circular mounting plates to said shaft for rotation therewith.
4. A rotatable brush as defined by claim 3 wherein said circular mounting plates comprise complementary semicircular sections each providing a periphery and a center hub portion, with the periphery providing means for connecting certain of said bristle-carrying core elements thereto, and with said hub portion of said certain of said circular plates providing means for connecting other bristle-carrying core elements thereto, which core elements have diameters different from said certain of said bristle-carrying core elements.

Claims (4)

A rotatable brush for a car washing machine including a. an elongated rotatable shaft, b. circular mounting plates having diameters greater than said shaft so as to extend radially therefrom, attached to said shaft for rotation therewith, c. bristle-carrying core elements having different diameters carried by said plates for rotation therewith, and d. means provided by certain of said plates for removably connecting said bristle-carrying core elements having different diameters to opposite sides of said plates and in axial alignment to said shaft for rotation therewith.
