NITED STATES PATENT Fierce,
JOHN H. THAISON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ROLLER FOR PRODUCING ALTO=RILIEVO CRNAMENTATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,833, dated April 10, 1888.
' Application filed July 5, 1887. Serial No. 243,412. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN H. THAISON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Roller for Producing Alto-Rilievo Ornamentation, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a roller to be used for producing ornamentation in alto-rilievo in plastic composition applied to picture-frame moldings, house-trimmings, or any other foundation material, and by the aid of an embossing-press in which the roller will be journaled opposite a bed holding the work.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction of the roller, as herein after described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved roller, and Fig. 2 is a face view of a piece of molding, having alto-rilievo ornamentation produced by the roller.
The roller is made with a rim or periphery A, which is supported at its central part from the hub B by a flange, C, and where the rim of the roller is broadened considerably, to accommodate designs of considerable width, such, for instance, as the laterally-projecting parts of leaves, flowers, or the like, radial ribs or fins D willbe cast or fixed between the rim A and hub B, at one or both sides of the flange C, as will be understood from Fig. 1 of A key-seat, a, in the rollerhuh provides for fixing the roller to a shaft of any suitable embossing-press.
In finishing the roller, its rim A will first be turned true, and then the particular design E, to be produced in alto-rilievo in a plastic composition applied toamolding, F, or other plate, strip, or structure to be ornamented, will be cut into the peripheral face of the roller, or be produced in intaglz'o thereon, and the margins of the rim A at each side will then be cut away to correspond with the marginal outlines of the design, and produce thereat suitable cutting-edges which will trim the plastic composition from the outer margins of the design, and where there are inside openings, g,in the design the rim of the roller will be formed with correspondinglyshaped slots or openings, G, which will flare from the outer face of the rim A to its inner face, to give ample clearance to those portions of the composition which are cut away by the margins of the openings G to pass through these openings and be discharged at the inside of the rim of the roller.
In producing the ornaments on the molding F, or other work, a strip of any suitable plastic composition backed with glue or other adhesive substance will be laid upon the molding, which will then be passed over the bed of any suitable press, in whichthe roller will be journaled in position to operate on the composition and cut away the composition at the outer margins of the various parts of the pat-tern of the ornament, and also at the interior openings, 9, of the ornament, as will readily be understood.
The ornamentation E shown consists of stems, leaves, and acorns suitably arranged to give a pleasing finish to moldings intended for use in making pictureframes; but the ornament may have any desred design in high or low relief, and may be applied to door-cas ings or other house-trimmings, or any other base or foundation, in making a variety of ornamented useful products.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A roller for producing altorilievo ornamcniation, made with a rim on the face of which are produced sunken or inlaglio pat terns, and said rim being cut away to conform to the outer margins of the patterns, and also cut through to conform to inside openings of the patterns, substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
2. A roller for producing altorilievo ornamentation, comprising a rim, A, held to a suitable hub adapted for connection to a driving-shaft, and said rim cut away at both side edges, to conform to the outer margins of patterns produced in intaglio on its face, and also cut through at G to conform to the margins of inside openings of the patterns, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN H. THAISON.
