SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380.662, dated April 3, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STILLMAN W. RoBINsoN, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, haveinvented an Improvement in Machines for Uniting the Soles and Uppers of Boots or ghoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompany ing drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
- This invention is an improvement upon that class of machines represented in United States Patent No. 325,274, dated September 1, 1885, the object of the invention being to enable the foot-piece to be raised automatically from the stock upon the horn, no matter what may be the thickness of the stock, immediately after the fastening has been inserted, thus leaving the stock free from pressure upon the horn to be engaged and fed into proper position to receive the next fastening.
In operation the usual presser or nose plate attached to the presser-plate-carrying sleeve common to the said patent, in its descent upon the sole or stock prior to inserting a fastening, strikes upon the upper side of a foot-piece, forcing it, together with the nose-plate, down upon the outer sole of the shoe or upon the stock resting upon the usual horn, the footpiece extending somewhat beyond the end of and serving to carry down with it the feeding device, so that the latter always rests with its serrated end against the edge of the outer sole. The foot-piece is attached to a block secured to a lift rod or bar normally kept elevated by means of a spring, the said rod or bar sliding in suitable bearings of a bracket attached to the frame-work. The lift rod or bar has a collar attached to it a short distance above the block referred to, the said rod or bar between the said collar and block being surrounded by a measuring-plate attached to a measuring-rod acted upon by a clamp, the latter serving to hold the said measuring-rod in the position in which it is left by the action of the said collar upon the said plate as the rod is pushed down through the action of the presser or nose plate referred to. The measuring-plate thereafter acts as a stop to arrest the upward movement of the lift-rod and foot-piece under the action of the spring referred to as soon as the presserplate begins to rise from the foot-piece, the distance between the collar and the block in excess of the thickness of the measuring-plate being the measure of the distance which the foot-piece is free to rise above the outer sole or stock, no matter what may be its thickness, in order that the feed-bar in engagement with the outer sole or stock may not in its movements have to overcome the friction of the foot-piece thereon.
The clamp referred to is placed under the control of the treadle employed to start and stop the machine, so that the same may be operated through the said treadle.
My invention in a machine for uniting soles to uppers by metallic fastenings consists in a horn to support the stock, afoot-piece adapted to be pressed down upon the stock preparatory to inserting each fastening, a lift rod or bar to which the said foot-piece is attached, and a collar secured to the said bar, and a spring to elevate the said bar, combined with a measuring-plate, a measuring-rod, and a clamp to hold the said measuring-rod in position to cause the measuring-plate to act as a stop to arrest the upward movement of the foot-piece preparatory to the action of the feeding-bar upon the stock, as will be described; also, in the combination, with a horn to support the stock, of a feed-bar to engage and feed the stock over the horn, a f00t-piece, and means, substantially as will be described, to force the said foot down upon the stock and to release and lift the same from the stock for a uniform distance irrespective of the thickness of the stock 5 also, in a machine for uniting soles to uppers, a lift-bar having an attached block and footpieoe, a collar, and a measuring rod and plate, combined with a clamp and with means, substantially as will be described, to act upon and release the clamp and permit the measuringrod to ascend through the action of a springpressed pin until the measuringfplate strikes the collar 0 as will be described; also, the combination, with the measuring-rod, of a clamp, a hub, and a rod, and spring with a lever having a cam-shaped end to co-operate with the said hub to move the clamp, as will be described; also, in a lift-rod, a collar thereon, and a measuring-rod, and having an attached measuring-plate surrounding the said lift-rod,

The frame-work A, the crank-pin A at the inner end of the main rotating shaft of the machine, the knuckle piece A, the presser or nose plate 0 at the lower end of the bearingplate 0, which in practice will be secured to a presser-carrying sleeve such as markedein the drawings of the said patent, and the horn H are and may be all as in the patent referred to, where the same letters are employed to designate the same parts.
The upright or standard A, but partially shown,has.attached to it by screwsa a bracket, a, having lugs a",which serve as hearings, in which slide the lift rod or bar a A portion of the said bracket also has a pin or stud, as a, upon which is pivoted a clamp, at", having, as herein shown, a cam-shaped upper end. The bracket to also has a rearwardly-extended arm, a, provided with a hub, of, having a V- shaped groove, the said hub being bored through to receive a bolt, b, which is extended loosely through the upper end of the clamp 11", the said bolt being surrounded between the clamp and hub a by a strong spiral springa The bolt 1), beyond the hub a, is extended loosely through a cam-lever, b made V-shaped in cross-section at one end, and thereafter a suitable adjusting-nut,b is applied to the said bolt to adjust the bolt 1) for proper release of the clamp a from the measuring-rod c by action of the treadle and lever I).
The cam-lever referred to is connected by link I) with a lever, b forming part of the starting mechanism of the machine, the said lever b. beingjoined by alink, 0 with the treadleb", so that when the machine is at rest the V- shaped end of the lever b will stand with its apex out of line with the bottom of the groove in the hub a When the said V-shaped or cam surface acts against the rigid hub a it will positively pull back the top of the clamp a and compress the spring a sufficiently to release the hold of the clamp 0, upon the measuring-rod c, to be described; but when the machine has been started and the apex of the said lever is automatically brought into the bottom of the groove in the said hub a the spring a is left free to exert its force upon and make the clamp a grip the said measuringrod.
When the machine is in action,the presser or nose plate on the lower end, 0, strikes the foot-piece d and forces it down to contact with the stock, said clamp being moved to release the measuringrod just as the said presser or nose plate e completes its descent preparatory to inserting a fastener by means of the hub of the pitman B, connected to the crank-pin A by its striking at that time and traveling in contact with the upperhooked or beveled end The lift-rod a is bored for the reception of 7 a spiral spring, as p, which normally acts to lift the presser-bar a the said spiral spring, as herein shown, surrounding a rod or pimp, the lower end of which is supported upon an ear, p screwed at p upon a projection, a, from the bracket a referred to.
The lift rod or bar a has fixed to it a block, d, to a projecting lug of which is attached by suitable screws, d, the foot-piece (1 the forward end of which is shown as beveled, to fit and to be acted upon by the under side of the presser or nose plate e attached to the usual presser-plate-carrying sleeve common to said patent, and therein marked e.
The foot-piece d has erected upon it a pin or stud, as (2*, which enters loosely and slides in a hole made in the rear part of the presserplate 0 The lift-rod a has also attached to it in an adjustable manner by a screw, as c, a collar, 0', the said collar being made adjustable according to the distance it is desired that the foot-piece shall rise above the surface of the sole or stock preparatory to the action of the feed-bar m against the edge of the outer sole to feed the shoe over the usual horn.
The bracket a referred to has a third lug, 0 which forms one of the bearings for the measuring-rod c, the other bearing being the lug a The measuring-rod has connected to it a measuring-plate, 0 (shown separately in Fig. 4,) it having a hole to receive in it the lift-rod a, the said plate surrounding the said presser-rod between the block d and the collar 0 the thickness of the plate 0 being less than the distance between the block and collar, the space unoccupied by the plate between the said block and collar determining the distance that the foot-piece may rise above thestock when the feed-bar is to be operated to feed the stock.
The bracket a referred to is bored verti-' cally to receive in it a stop-pin,g, which is acted upon by a set-screw, g, to confine it in adjusted position, the lower end of the said stop-pin acting to limit the ascent of the feedbar m, so that it cannot rise to an objectionable distance above the top of the horn, the said stop taking the place of the contrivance marked in United States Patent No. 325,274.
The measuring-plate e referred to (see Fig. 2) is acted upon by a loose pin, a, in turn acted upon by a spring, 12, so that whenever the measuring-rod is released by the clamp a which is the case whenever the hub of thepitman B strikes the upper cam-shaped end of the clamp, the said spring-pressed pin a acts to lift the measuring-plate c and with it the bar 0, out of the way of the block d, where it is held by the clamp a as soon as the pitman passes, so that the lift-rod c acted upon by the spring 1), can rise, and with it the foot-piece d, until the bracket (1 strikes the measuringplate 0 and as soon as the presser-plate e rises sufliciently above the stock. The rod 0?, acted upon by the spring p, rises until the block d meets the measuring-plate c, which was just previously raised against the collar 0 by the spring-pressed pin a while the clamp a was moved to release the measuring-rod.

The rear end of the lever 33 has pivoted to it at 3 a cam-leg, h, which embraces a crankpin, 4, at the end of a short crankshaft, 5, having an arm, 6, the said arm being connected by rod 44 with a treadle, 45, so that the operator by his foot on the treadle can adjust the distance of the fastenings from the edge of the sole to suit. The movement of the crank-pin carries with it backward or forward the cam-leg, so that the cam in the descent of the leg will act upon the rear end of the feedbar at and push it forward a greater or less distance on or with relation to the fulcrum 38 for the feed-bar, the second bar sliding in the said fulcrum and being normally drawn backward against the said leg by a spring, as 46.
I claim 1. In a machine for uniting soles to uppers by metallic fastenings, a born to support the stock and a foot-piece, as d, adapted to be pressed down upon the stock preparatory to inserting each fastening, and alift-rod to which the said foot-piece is attached, a collar, 0, secured to the said bar, and a spring to elevate the said bar, combined with a measuring plate and measuring-rod, and a clamp to hold the said measuring-rod in position to cause the measuring-plate to act as a stop to arrest the upward movement of the foot-piece preparatory to'the action of the feeding-bar upon the stock, substantially as described.
2. Thecombination,withthehorntosupport the stock, of the feed-bar to engage and feed the stock over the horn, a foot piece, and means, substantially as described, to force the said foot-piece down upon the stock to release and lift the same from the stock for a uniform distance irrespective of the thickness of the stock, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for uniting soles to uppers, the liftrod of, its attached block and foot lift, a collar, 0 and the measuring rod and plate, combined with the clamp and with means, substantially as described, to act upon and release the'clamp to permit the measuring-rod to ascend until arrested by the collar 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the measuring-rod, the clamp, the hub a and the rod 1), ofa spring, a, and the lever b having a cam-shaped end to co-operate with the said hub to release the clamp, substantially as described.
5. The lever 33, its slotted camleg, and the feed-bar m, combined with the crank 5, having the arm'6, and the treadle and connecting-rod,
to operate substantially as described.
6. The presser-rod a its collar 0", and the measuring-rod, and its attached measuringplate surrounding the said rod, combined with the spring-pressed pin a, to normally elevate the said presser-rod, as and for the purpose set forth.
