Int. or. 1521:? 2/00 US. Cl. 162-306 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A combined pick-up and press for a wet end of a paperrnaking machine is provided with a press roll mounted on a fixed frame, with the suction pick-up roll carried by an articulated linkage for arcuate movement about the press roll into a webpick-up position. The pick-up roll can be first loaded against the press roll and then swung downwardly to the wire, to pick up the web. An additional press roll mounted in resilient pressing relationship with the fixedly mounted press roll is used to transfer the web to a transfer felt for subsequent conveyance and processing in the press section of the machine.
This invention is directed to a combination web pickup and press arrangement, and in particular to an improved pick-up roll suspension.
In the operation of paper machines having combined pick-up and press facilities adjacent the couch roll of a forming section, there has been a practice of mounting the granite press roll and the suction pick-up roll in pivotting relation, together with the third press roll, for combined movement to bring the suction pick-up roll into contact with the oifgoing wire at or adjacent to the couch roll.
In order to thus mount the three rolls of a pick-off press for combined movement relative to the forming wire it has previously been the practice to provide a frame of heavy structure, and a correspondingly powerful actuator for moving the three rolls simultaneously in bringing the pick-up roll into web pick-up relation with the wet section.
The present invention provides an adjustable suspension for the pick-up roll only, permitting the following roll or rolls of the combined pick-up press to be mounted onto the main frame. In addition to providing an inherently stiffer mounting arrangement for the press rolls by directly attaching these rolls to the main frame, the present arrangement permits utilization of smaller actuators for positioning the pick-up roll, owing to the reduction in suspended weight, while a lower press profile also is possible.
To practice the present invention, the pick-up roll is mounted for arcuate displacement about the axis of the adjoining press roll, using a four-link suspension system to permit displacement of the pick-up roll at a substantially constant radius about the axis of the press roll. A single screw jack is used for linkage articulation, in swinging the pick-up roll into its operative positon.
Thus the present invention provides a multi-roll press combination for pressing a moving web, having a web pick-up roll mounted for displacement from an inoperative position to an operative position, an adjoining roll mounted for rotation about a fixed axis, being supported by fixed end frames, the pick-up roll having a pair of end shafts, spaced journals to receive the end shafts, relatively moveable housing means supporting the journals, each moveable housing means being spaced from a respective relatively fixed end frame by a substantially ice coplanar four link suspension means, one link of the suspension means being moveably supported by the other links to provide displacement of one portion thereof, through a portion of an arc substantially parallel with the roll surface of the adjoining roll, to provide substantially constant roll surface contact relation between the surfaces of the pick-up and the adjoining roll in moving the pick-up roll from an inoperative position to an operative position, and jacking means to selectively articulate the link suspension to effect such arcuate displacement of the pick-up roll.
Certain embodiments of the present invention are described, reference being made to the accompanying drawing which comprises a schematic side view taken at the couch end of a paper machine, showing the pick-up press combination.
Referring to the drawing, the combined pick-up and press roll arrangement 10 is illustrated in the pick-up position, relative to the Fourdrinier wire 11 passing over couch roll 12.
The combination pick-up 10 includes a suction pick-up roll 14, a granite press roll 16, and an additional press roll 18. The press rolls 16, 18 are mounted in a fixed frame 20, which also carries the pick-up roll 14, supported therefrom by way of an articulated linkage 22. The frame 20 also carries a roll 24 for third press felt 26 to which the web W from wire 11 is eventually transferred. The press roll 18 is shown pivotally mounted to the frame 20, for adjustable loading against roll 16, in known fashion, by pneumatic spring or air bag 23.
The linkage 22 for pick-up roll 14 comprises a top link 30 to which the bearing housing 15 of the roll 14 is pivotally attached at 32. The top link 30 is suspended by links 34, 36, pivotally attached thereto at 38, 40, respectively. Links 34 and 36 are pivotally attached to the frame 20. A screw threaded jack actuator 46, having one end pivotally attached at 48 to the top link 30 is pivotally attached at 50 to the frame 20. The actuator 46 serves to displace the linkage 22 so that the pick-up roll 14 is moved substantially arcuately about the center 17 of press roll 16, to maintain contact between the working surfaces of the rolls 14, 16. The actuator 46 is powered through shaft 60 which also powers the corresponding actuator, to maintain roll parallelism. The roll 14 is normally a vacuum pick-up roll, being also known in phantom in a retracted position preparatory to movement to the pick-up position.
An adjustment toggle linkage 52 connects the bearing housing 15 of pick-up roll 14 to a pivotal presser arm 54. The presser arm 54 is loaded by an air bag 56 carried on the top link 30, and serves to maintain roll-to-roll pressure between the pick-up roll 14 and the granite press roll 16. An alternative type roll loading arrangement can dispense with the adjustment linkage 52, and presser arm 54.
With the wet end of the machine in operation, the jack actuators 46 (only one being shown) are simultaneously energized by the common cross shaft 60, causing the pick-up roll 14 to move arcuately downward about the surface of roll 16, into contacting relation with the web W carried on wire 11. The web W is picked up by roll 14 and then transferred by way of the pick-up roll felt 14' to the granite roll 16, to the press nip between rolls 16 and 18, and is moved thence by the felt 18' to the transfer felt 26, for subsequent processing in the press section of the machine.
Thus, in considering the function of the subject arrangement as compared with previous arrangements, in view of the fixed position of the second press roll the pick-up roll has to perform a pick-up movement into the wire of the paper machine, to effect transfer of the paper web, and also the roll has to provide nip pressure against the second roll, to effect pressing therewith.
The adoption of a four bar link system provides circular orbital movement of the pivot 32 in an are about the center of the fixed roll 16. The limited actuator stroke required to thus lower the suction pick-up roll into the wire permits the use of air bags of limited stroke.
It will be understood that the presently described embodiment is also suitable for a multi-press roll arrangement, while maintaining the roll adjoining the pick-up roll in a fixed position.
What I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
