Description

(No Model.)
J. WEIGHHART.
HAND NAIL DRIVING IMPLEMENT.
N0. 380,612. 1 Patented Apr. 3, 1888.
UNITED STATES JOHN \VEICHHART, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAND NAIL-DRIVING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,612, dated April 3, 1888 Application filed September 22, 1887 Serial No. 250,454. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WEIOHHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand N ail-Driving Machines, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates especially to machines or apparatus for driving nails by hand, and has for its object the production of a device wherein many of the parts heretofore necessaryin machines of this class may be dispensed with, rendering the machine portable and cheaper in construction, easier to use, and much more effective in operation than those heretofore employed.
To attain this end my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my nail-driving implement. Figs. 2 and 3 are views in section showing adjustment of handle to the hammer or piston and the nailin position in the end ofthe barrel or tube. Fig. 4 is a view in section of the lower portion of the implement, with arm or rest connected thereto. Fig. 5 is a detached view of arm or rest.
Like letters of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Ais thetnbe or barrel, providedwithascrewcap, B, which acts as a guide for the upper end of the plunger or piston O. A weighted handle, D, is connected to the outer end of the hammer or piston, by which a heavier blow is given to the head of the nail by the lower end of the piston when impact takes place. The upper end of the piston extends upward into the handle, in which position it is held by the set-screw, as shown.
Near the lower end of the barrel or tube is connecteda spring-arm provided with a double inclined lug or tang, E, which operates in a slot made in the barrel or tube. The springarm is made adjustable on the tube by means of the collar and set-screw F, and the two can be moved up or down the barrel, or the collar be moved along upon the spring to give a greater or less resilience to it, and thus permit the doublefaced inclined lug or tang to hold the head of the nail with more or less firmness.
In localities where it becomes necessary to drive nails more or less at an inclination or in an oblique manner the curved arm or guiderest G is employed, the position of which is shown in Fig. 4. This rest is connected to the lower end of the barrel by a setscrew, G*, and may be easily removed from the tube when driving nails in a horizontal or vertical position. The barrel or tube is constructedin two sections, and the diameter of the bore in the upper section is greater than that of thelower section, as shown in Fig. 2-. The two sections are united by a coupling, A The upper end of the lower section forms a stop against which a collar, 0*, on the piston strikes when a blow is given and prevents the lower end of the piston from extending beyond the end of the tube, as shown in Fig. 3. The barrel or tube is also provided with collars H H, with eyeholes through which straps or cords are passed for suspendingtheimplement around the neck or shoulders of the person operating the hammer or piston in such a manner that the implement willbein front of the operator at right angles to the body in a horizontal plane or inclined position, and of sufficient height for easy operation, thus leaving both hands free.
In practice the lower end of the piston or hammer is drawn outward in the tube above the double inclined lug, and then the nail is placed in the end of the tube with the left hand and pushed backward its entire length, or so that the lower end or point of the nail will be flush with the lower end of the barrel or tube, which latter is breasted against the wood, when with the righthand the operator will grasp the handle and draw back the piston a sufficient distance, and then force it outward or downward to strike the blow with the end of the piston upon the head of the nail and drive it home in the wood. By this means nailing can be performed in a rapid manner, as the nails will be fed to the tube with one hand and the hammer or piston operated by the other hand of person using the implement.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the barrel or tube slotted in its lower portion and the piston or hammer working in said tube, of the springarm provided with the double inclined lug or tang operating in the slot in tube to hold the head of the nail in position, said spring-arm being adjustable on the tube by suitable means,
as a collar and setscrew, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a portable nail-driving machine or implement consisting of a nailcontaining barrel or tube and hammer or piston, of the curved adjustable guide-rest and x 5 means for suspending the implement to the person of the operator, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
