No. 209,263, filed Dec. 17, 1971.
Cotton roll holders have been previously provided for isolating the lower anterior teeth from the lips, cheeks and tongue so that the teeth may be maintained in a dry condition while dental work is being performed. The previous cotton roll holders were generally unsatisfactory due to the amount of space that they occupied in the patients mouth which seriously hampered the performance of dental work. Applicants cotton roll holders described in the co-pending application represented a distinct improvement over the prior art devices and this invention represents an improvement overapplicants earlier devices. The instant invention is intended to be of the disposable type which eliminates the need for sterlization of the holders after use.
Therefore, it is a principal object of the invention to provide an improved cotton roll holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lower anterior cotton roll holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a disposable lower anterior cotton roll holder comprising a pair of U-shaped supports having cotton rolls secured thereto by adhesive or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lower anterior cotton roll holder which does not interfere with the performance of dental work.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lower anterior cotton roll holder which is comprised of a plastic material or the like.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cotton roll holder which is economical in manufacture, durable in use and refined in appearance.
These and other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS This invention consists in the construction, arrangements and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, specifically pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the cotton roll holder of this invention:
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken along lines 2--2 of FIG. 1:
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the cotton roll holder:
FIG. 4 is a top view of the cotton roll holder; and FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken along lines 5-5 of FIG. 4.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The cotton roll holder of FIG. 1 is referred to generally by the reference numeral and includes a jaw clamp 12 having a spoon shaped chin engaging plate member 14. An upstanding plate element 16 extends through a slot 18 in the handle 20 of the spoon member 14 whereby the spoon member 14 is selectively vertically adjustable along the length of the vertical member 16.
Holder 10 includes a rearwardly extending portion 22 at the upper end of plate element 16. The numeral 24 refers to a U-shaped support which extends rearwardly from the support 22 and which comprises legs 26 and 28 extending lateraly outwardly from the support 22.
The numeral 30 refers to a U-shaped support which is disposed between the legs of the support 24 as illustrated in the drawings. Support 30 comprises a pair of legs 32 and 34 which extend laterally outwardly from the forward center portion thereof. A pair of laterally extending arches 36 and 38 connect the outer ends of the legs 26, 32, 28 and 34. As seen in the drawings, the arches 36 and 38 extend upwardly from the outer ends of the respective legs so that the rearward end of the arches is disposed above the plane of the U-shaped supports 24 and 30 as viewed in FIG. 5.
A labial cotton roll 40,is secured to the underside of support 24 by a suitable adhesive such as glue or the like. A lingual cotton roll 42 is secured to the underside of the support 30 by a suitable adhesive as illustrated in the drawings. The length of the labial cotton roll 40 is such that the rearward or outer ends thereof also serve as buccal cotton rolls. Preferably, the entire holder with the exception of the cotton rolls is constructed of a suitable plastic material.
The holder is positioned with respect to the patient's mouth as illustrated in FIG. 1. The labial cotton roll 40 is positioned adjacent the front teeth as illustrated in FIG. 1 and in FIG. 2.,The lingual cotton roll 42 is positioned rearwardly of the lower teeth as illustrated in the drawings.
The design of the cotton roll holder allows the dentist flexibility in isolating the lower anterior teeth for maximum dental work while maintaining the teeth in a dry condition. The U-shaped supports 24 and 30 maintain the cotton rolls in position and do not interfere with the dental work. being performed by the dentist. The face that the cotton rolls are glued to the holder permits the holder to be economically manufactured and permits the entire holder to be disposed of when the dental work has been performed.
Thus it can be seen that the invention accomplishes at least all of its stated objectives.
