Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SononLLEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Waterford, in the county of Golumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mowing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mowing-machines, and has for its object to simplify the construction of the operating parts, render the machine more compact, and reduce the cost of manufacture.
The invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan or top View of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a perspective ofthe upper end of the lever which engages with the main wheel. Fig. at is an enlarged side elevation showing the finger-bar frame raised and the lever for vibrating the cutter-bar disengaged from the drive wlieel. Fig. 5 is a plan of the frame of the machine, and Fig. 6 is a front view showing the lever for operating the cutter-bar attached to the angular extension of the frame and the swinging arm which engages with the drive-wheel.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters marked thereon, A represents the frame, which is provided with an angular front extension, (I, and ahorizoutal bracket, 12, at the lower end of the arm or extension at for supporting the finger -bar frame B. The frames A and B are supported upon a main or driving wheel, C, which operates in a slot or opening in the frameA and two caster-wheels, c (I, supported by vertically-adjustable arms operating in guideways in the ends of the tingerhar frame. The driving-wheel has alternate corrugations formed on the edges of its rim,with which the studs ef on the plate 9 engage. The finger-bar frame B is provided at each end with vertical projections or extensions E F, on the outer sides of which are formed guideways q, in which slide vertically arms 2', which are provided with a plate, 3, fitting in said guideway q and supporting caster-wheels c d, which revolve freely in said arms 1". To the upper ends of the arms 1" are attached links it, connected to cranks v on a rock-shalt, w, supported by the extensions E F of the-fingerbar frame. To the rock-shaft w is attached a lever, to, within easy reach of the driver and by which the finger-bar frame and the cutterbar D are raised any desired distance from the ground to regulate the cut of the machine. The drive-wheel C is supported upon an axle, b, journaled in the frame A, and forms the fulcrum upon which the entire machine rises and falls to raise and lower the cutter-bar by the action of the lever a, and the finger-bar frame rising and falling 011 the arm '2- to which the caster-wheels are attached.
From the under side of the armi project pins c,which limit the oscillation of the plate 9 as it is moved upon its pivot or holtj by the wheel G.
G is the seat for the driver, which is sup ported upon brackets secured to the frame A, and is arranged directly over the drive-wheel a little in the rear of the axle b, so that the weightof the driver will be exerted in raising the frame of the machine for passing any obstacle in theway, throughthemediuin of lever a, the arms r, and intermediate connections. To the frame A are also attached extensions (2 d,between which the tongue or pole of the machine is secured.
By placing the cutter-bar immediately in front of the drive-wheel from which it is reclprocated, all side draft of the machine is overcome, the connection between the wheel and the cutter-bar made direct, and the number of working parts greatly reduced.
The frame with its angular extension, to which the finger-bar frame is secured, are cast integral, thereby making it firm and greatly reducing the cost of construction, while the entire machine is supported upon the drive-wheel and the casters at each end of the finger-bar frame.
It is obvious that the principle of operating the cutter-bar may easily be applied to lawnmowers, and I do not therefore limit my invention to the machine to which it is shown applied.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is l. mowing maehine provided with a single drive-wheel having alternately-corrugated edges, in combination with afinger-bar frame and a cutter-bar supported immediately in front of said wheel, a lever fulcrumed on an angular arm in front of the drive-wheel, connected to the cutter-bar at its lower end and to the drive-wheel at its upper end by a hinged arm, for throwing the vibrating lever inand out of gear with the actuating-wheel, and studs on the hinged arm which engage with the rim of the wheel, substantially as described.
2. A mowing-machine provided with a single corrugated drive-wheel anda frame, having an angular depending arm in front of the wheel, provided with a horizontal bracket, in combination with a-finger-bar and a vibrating cutter-bar supported on said bracket, a lever fulcrumed on the angular arm of the frame, engaging with the cutter-bar at its lower end and connected to the drive-wheel at itsupper end by an arm hinged to the lever to throw the vibrating lever in and out of gear with the actuating-wheel and provided with an oscillating plate pivoted on the arm at right angles to the hinged arm, said plate having studs for engaging with the corrugations in the edges of the wheel, and the pins on the hinged armfor limiting the movement of the oscillating plate, substantially as described.
