Martin [57] ABSTRACT A pencil box for holding sharpened and dull pencils. This device consist primarily of acontainer with a slideable cover, having a spring loaded rod with arm means and lip means for simultaneously urging a sharp pencil out of one end of the box with the aid of pressure from a dull pencil being entered into the opposite end of the box.
.. Al ah-L1. .prezrisali et i PENCIL BOX This invention relates to containers and more particularly to a pencil box.
It is therefore the principal object of this invention to provide a pencil box which will store sharp pencils and dull pencils simultaneously.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pencil box which will have a longitudinal rod secured therein, upon which is slideable an arm having a lip on each end, one of the lips serving as a means for urging a fresh pencil out of the box while the other lip serves as a means for using a dull pencil to urge the fresh pencil outwards while the dull pencil will'remain inside the box in the compartment designated for the dull pencils.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a pencilbox which will have a slideable cover carried within groove means on one side of the box structure so as to enable the user to remove the dull pencils for sharpening and enable the user to place the sharpened pencils into the appropriate compartment for dispensing the sharp pencils, one at a time.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a pencil box of the type described which will include a diagonal wall portion which will provide separation means for the compartments, one of which receives the dull pencils and the other for receiving the sharp pencils.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a pencil box which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification together with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the present invention shown partly broken away;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing the preferred embodiment of the presentinvention;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view ken away; and
FIG. S'is a cross-sectional view taken'along the line 55 of FIG. 3.
According to this invention,.a pencil box is shown to include parallel side walls 11, parallel end walls 12 which are fixedly secured to a top wall 13 and a bottom wall 14. A longitudinally slideable cover 15 is carried within groove 16 and provided a means for replacement and removal of sharpened and dull pencils from the interior of box 10.
An opening 17 of one of the end walls 12 provides a means for entering a dull pencil 18 which will be urged against the lip 19 of arm 20. Arm 20 is supported slideably upon a longitudinal shaft 21 secured to the end walls 12 of box 10 A lip 22 on the opposite side of arm 20 serves as a means of urging against the end of the sharp pencil 23 thus urging it out of the opening 24 on the opposite end wall 12 of box 10.
It shall be noted that a diagonally disposed inner wall 21' which extends downward from the upper top wall 13 defines a pair of compartments within box 10, one of which receives the sharpened pencils and the other which receives the dull pencils.
A spring 25 is carried upon rod 20, and one end of spring 25 urges against an end wall 12 and the opposite of FIG. 3, shown partly broend of spring 25 urges against the hub portion of arm 20 so as to serve as return means for the arm 20 after a sharpened pencil has been urged outwards by lip 21 when the dull pencil 18 is urged against the lip 19.
Referring now to FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing, one will see a modified form of pencil box 25 which includes parallel spaced apart side walls 26, a bottom wall 27, and a divider wall 28 fixedly secured to bottom wall 27. The wall 28 serves to define compartments 29 and 30, the compartment 29 receiving the sharp pencils and the compartment 30 serving to receive the dull pencils. A shoulder 31 of the upper extremity of box 25 serves to receive the hollow cover 32. A recess 33 on one side of pencil box 25 enables the cover 32 to be snapably be engaged thereto, by means of the projection 34.
The letter characters 35 inscribed upon one of the end walls 36 serve to indicate the compartments for the placement of the dull pencils 37 and the sharp pencils 38 which are accessible to by means of the cover 32.
When it is desired to use a sharp pencil 38, the cover 32 is removed from box 25 and is also removed when it is desired to place a dull pencil 37 within its compartment 30 as designated by means of the letter characters 35 upon the end wall 36.
What I now claim is:
l. A pencil box for the storage of sharpened and dull pencils, comprisng a hollow retangular configurated structure having parallel spaced apart side walls, parallel spaced apart end walls each end wall having an inlet or outlet opening and parallel spaced apart top and bottom wall, a diagonal wall carried within said box providing separation means forforming two compartments therein each of said compartments having one of said openings, one of said compartments receiving dull pencils and the other compartment receiving sharp pencils, a rod member carried within'said box structure having arm means for dispensing a sharp pencil by means of a dull pencil entering one of said opening and moving said arm means, a spring carried by said rod member providing return means for said arm after dispsensing a sharp pencil from said structure, and a slideable cover being the top wall of said box for the placement of said sharp pencils therein and for the removal of said dull pencils therefrom.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said rod member is secured fixedly to said end walls of said container structure and said arm is slideable thereon, said arm having a lip portion at each end, one of said lip portions providing abutment means for the tip of a dull pencil so as to enable the opposite lip portion of said arm to eject a sharp pencil from the compartment containing said sharp pencils on the opposite side of said compartment carrying said dull pencils.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said rod is carried within a longitudinal opening of said diagonal wall, said diagonal wall extending from the top wall towards the bottom wall and said arm slideable upon said rod urges against one end of said spring carried upon said rod. the opposite end of said spring urging against the end wall of said structure and when said dull pencil is entered into the inlet opening of the opposite end wall, said dull pencil abutts with said'lip of said arm and the user urges said arm against the tension of said spring and in doing so, the opposite lip of said arm urges a sharp pencil out of the outlet opening of the opposite end wall of said structure and said dull 3 4 pencil is fully entered into said compartment desig- 4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein nated therefor, wherein it rests upon said bottom wall said slideable cover is slideable within groove means in and thus said arm is returned automatically by said said side walls. spring action upon said rod.
