1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures ELECTROMAGNETIC VALVE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to the electromagnetic valves used to supply a vacuum to the operating members of machines.
PRIOR ART Widely known in the art are electromagnetic valves for supplying a vacuum to the operating members of various machines containing a locking pair consisting of a slide valve and a housing with two channels, one of which channels is connected with the vacuum source and the other channels with the operating members of the machines. To return the slide valve to the operating position, it is connected with a spring or another electromagnet.
For use a spring as a means for returning the slide valve to the initial position, the known valves require electromagnets of large capacity which is mainly consumed to overcome the action of said spring. In addition, these valves cannot be constructed so that they can be switched off rapidly, as increasing the spring action results merely in an increase in the capacity of the electromagnet.
The use of an electromagnet as a means for returning the slide valve to the initial position, means the valve design becomes complicated and toensure a rapid actuation of the electromagnet, it is necessary to use a special diagram to switch it on forcibly which also complicates. the valve design.
OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the invention is to provide an electromagnetic valve of simple design which ensures a rapid disconnection of the vacuum.
Another object of the invention is to provide an electromagnetic valve which makes it possible to use lowcapacity electromagnets.
These and other objects are attained in the electromagnetic valve for supplying a vacuum to the operating members of machines, whose slide valve of the locking pair is connected to the electromagnet to return the slide valve to the operating position and to the means for returning the slide valve to the initial position, according to the invention, the means for returning the slide valve to the initial position comprises a membrane located in the housing whose under-the-membrane cavity is connected to a vacuum pipe linking the locking pair to the operating members of machines.
The essence of the present invention is as follows:
As the means for returning the slide valve to the initial position comprises 'a membrane having a cavity therebeneath connected to a vacuum pipe linking the valve with the operating members of the machine, a
vacuum is not available in the cavity under the membrane when the slide valve is in the initial position, and the membrane does not offer any resistance to be overcome by the electromagnet actuated to move the slide valve to the operating position. This makes it possible to make use of a low-capacity electromagnet.
On the other hand, the action developed by the electromagnet with the raised armature considerably exceeds the action developed thereby with the lowered armature, and since the geometrical dimensions of the under-the-membrane cavity are selected so that the action developed by the membrane after a vacuum has been supplied therebelow, is commensurable with the action developed by the electromagnet with the raised armature, the membrane will practically instantaneously return the slide valve to the initial position as soon as the power supply of the electromagnet is cutoff.
Thus a rapid cut-off of the vacuum supply to the operating members is ensured by comparatively simple means without utilising return electromagnets controlled by a special diagram.
The invention is further explained by way of specific example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a sectional view of the valve, according to the invention, with the locking element in the intial position; and
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 of the valve, with the locking element in the operating position.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The valve comprises a housing I with a channel 2 located therein, the channel being periodically in communition, by means of the slide valve 3 to a channel 4 connected with a vacuum source (not shown in the drawing). The locking pair is defined by a housing with the channels 2,4 and the slide valve 3.
The slide valve 3-by means of a linkage 5 is connected to an armature 6 of an electromagnet 7 designed for moving the slide valve 3 tothe operating position. v
On the other side the slide valve 3 is connected by means of a linkage 8 to a membrane or diaphragm 9' fastened to a housing 10 containing a channel 11.
The channels 2 and 11 connect the locking pair and a under-the-membrane cavity 13 respectively with the vacuum pipe 12 leading tothe operating members of the machine.
The valve operates in the following way: 7
The electromagnet 7 (FIG.1) is switched off in the initial position, its armature 6 is drawn back, and the slide valve 3 is in the initial position, i.e., it cuts off the channel 2 from the channel 4 connected with the source of vacuum being supplied in the direction of the arrow a. In this case, a vacuum is not supplied to the cavity 13.
To supply a vacuum to the channel 2 and to the vacuum pipe 12, the electromagnet 7 is switched on and the armature 6, by means of the linkage 5, moves the slide valve 3 to the operating position, thus placing the channel 2 in communication with the channel 4.
In this case, the vacuum supply through the vacuum pipe 12 is also fed to the channel 11 and to the cavity 13 (F102). By being thus affected by the vacuum, the membrane 9 tends to be drawn into the housing 10, thereby exerting an action sufficient to return the slide valve 3 to the initial position commensurable with the action developed by the electromagnet 7 with the armature 6 drawn back.
For a quick cut-off of the vacuum supply to the operating members of the machine, it is necessary to switch off the power supply of the electromagnet 7, and the slide valve 3 effected by the membrane 9 will return to the initial position in which the channels 2 and 4 are disconnected.
The present electromagnetic valve can be applied to the machines used in various branches of technology in all situations in which a need arises to cut off rapidly a vacuum supply to the operating members.
It is most expedient to apply the valve in the embodiment disclosed above in the printing industry for the page-counting machines. 7
Moreover, the present valve can successively be used in machines having two stable conditions for the operating members, for example, a change-over pointer for changing the direction of movement of the printed newspapers produced by the rotary machines.
In this case, it is possible, out of two or more abovementioned valves, to provide an arrangement for switching over the vacuum supply to one or another channel.
What is claimed is:
1. An electromagnetic valve for supplying a vacuum to operating members of machines, comprising a housing having two channels, one channel being in communication with a vacuum source and means providing 7 communication between the other channel and the operating members, a slide valve movable relatively to the housing to a first position blocking communication between said two channels and a second position providing communication between said two channels, an electromagnet having an armature, means operably connecting the armature to the slide valve whereby upon activation of the electromagnetic means the slide valve is moved to the second position and means for returning the slide valve to the first position operably connected to the slide valve, said returning means including a housing, a membrane within the housing providing a cavity under the membrane, and conduit means providing communication between said cavity and the means providing communication between the other channel and the operating members.
