AUTOMATlC PNEUMATIC CAR-LAMP EXTINGUISHER.

To all 2072,0127, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Ausrrnv BERRY, of Warden, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Pneumatic Car-Lamp Extinguishers, (for which I received a patentin Canada, No. 27,502, dated August 2st, 1887;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the interior of a car in elevation, showing my lamp'extinguishing apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top view of the air-tank detached from the car; and Fig. 3 is a section of the same on line 00 cc, Fig. 2.
My invention has for its objects, first, to automatically extinguish the flame of lamps in a car when the car is either upsetting or colliding, to prevent the car taking tire, and, second, to conveniently extinguish the carlamps at any convenient time by turning a cock on the inside of the car.
My invention consists of a tank supplied with compressed air from the ainbrake cylinder or reservoir, weights or push-rod and levers operating to open a valve in the airtank, and pipes discharging a blast of air under compression from the tank onto the respective lamp-burners in a car, whereby the weight will fall when the car assumes an inclined position resulting from upsetting; or, in case of collision, a rod will be moved endwise to operate a lever to open the valve and discharge compressed air ihrough the pipes to extinguish the lamps.

The tank C has an outlet-pipe, D, provided with a valve, G, having a spindle inserted at the intersection of cruciform lever H outside the tank.
I I I I are rails running four square around or above the top of the tank and bearing in with a sleeve, K, which by a rod, F, connects with one of the levers H.
L are pipes from the outlet-pipe D of the tank and run through the car toward each lamp to discharge a blast of air to extinguish the flame of the burners simultaneously when the car upsets, one of the weights then falling against a sleeve, K, thereby causing it to slide on the rail and impel the cruciform lever to rotate the spindle and open the valve G to cause a discharge of compressed air to eXil-lllguish the flame of the lamps. The rails I are inclined downward to keep the weight from contact with the sleeve when the cars are in motion on the rails.
The lever H after each disaster has to be returned by hand to close the valve, and the weights have to be reset to their former position.
N is a rod, one end attached to one of the arms of cruciform lever H, and extends forward under the car to the front, so that in case of the cars telescoping, the rod will be thrust back to open the valve G and cause the lamps to be extinguished.
O isabranch pipe connecting the tank with the distributing-pipes L, and said branch pipe 0 is provided with a cock, P, so that by turning the cock from the inside of the car the lights can be simultaneously extinguished at any time by a blast of air from the tank.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the air-brake cylinder B, connecting-pipe E, discharge-pipe D, valve G, air-drum G, cross-lever H, the four inclined rods I, connecting-rods F and sleeves K thereon, and sliding weights J, as described.
2. The combination of the air-brake cylinder B, the inlet and outlet pipes, at check-valve toward the air-brake cylinder, a cock-valve,G, suitable tubes leading to the lamps, through which the compressed air in the drum can be discharged, the connecting-link on one arm of the cross-lever H extending to the end of the car, the connecting-rods I, sleeves K, supported on the inclined rods I, and the sliding weights J, substantially as described.
