It consists of the particular constructions and combinations hereinafter described and y particularly claimed.'

(chamotte,) which is supported by means of the ribs f, leaning against the cylindrical shell a,of refractory material, surrounding the said retort e, so that a space or chamber, g, is formed, from whence radially-arranged canals h extend,which lead off the fire gases which enter through the end pieces, I I I, from the generator and play around the retort within the space'or chamber g. I A The retort e is charged and emptied th rough the closable port l when the process of distillation is ended. For emptying the retort the port Zis turned downward.
The shell ais clad with sheet-iron, to which the toothed ring is attached, which is operated by the toothed wheels d', so that the entire ap"- paratus is set in rotary motion. 4o The rings b, which rotate on the rollers C, are connected to the toothed ring and serve to carry the entire apparatus.
When the apparatus rotates, the retort e;

bustion, which are led off into the open air or into. a chimney.
The process is carried into operation in the following manner: If the retort has been charged through the port l ywith a charge of calamine and coal until the same is about half 1 full, the port Z is closed and the apparatus caused to make a rotary movement by means of appropriate gearing and toothed rings,whi le the fire-gases introduced from the rear through m play around the retort in the direction shown by the arrows. The contents of the retort e will, in consequence of thevrotation of the apparatus, roll on the walls of the said retort and thus produce a continuous mixing of the materials of the charge, so that a more rapid distilling process is attained than can be effected with the muffie, tubular, or other furnaces. The products of the zinc distillation escape through the canal p into the condensing-chamber o, Where the same are condensed and letfoff' through the space r. The zinc-dust formed during this process is caught in lthe vessel or chamber g, which, in consequence of its size, can be provided with one or more partitions. After continuing the process for about six` hours the zinc contained in the retort is distilled off and the residue is removed by the port Z,which is for this purpose turned downward, whereupon the apparatus is so rotated-- ving ores are not new, and do not'broadly claim such.
We claim as our inventionl. .The described apparatus, consisting of the cylindrical shell having an opening in one end to admit the heating-blast andan opening in the other end for the exit of the vapors from the retort, said shell being supported on rollers and provided with cog-rings and pinions for turning it and having radially-arranged channels leading from its interior outward, and
an opening for the admission of the charge, in

and a suitable discharge-passage from the collecting-canal, substantially as described.
2. The described apparatus, consisting of the cylindrical shell having an opening in one end to admit the heating-blast and an opening in the other end for the exit of the vapors from the retort, said shell being supported on rollers and provided with cog-rings and pinions for turning it and having radially-arranged channels leading from its interior outward, and an opening for the admission of the charge, in combination with a retort, e, supported within the shell,with a space about it connected with the inlet-passage'for the blast, a fixed collecting-canal arranged over the canals hand communicating therewith as the cylinder is turned, and a suitable discharge-passage from the collectingcanal and also combined with a condensingchamber, substantially as described.
3. The described apparatus, consisting of the cylindrical shell having an opening in one end to admit the heating-blast and an opening in the other end for the exit of the vapors from the retort, said shell being supported on rollers and provided with cog-rings and pinions for turning it and having radiallyarranged channels leading from its interior outward, and
an opening for the admission of the charge,
in combination with a retort, e, supported within the shell, with a space about it connected with the inletpassage for the blast, a fixed collectingcanal arranged over the canals h and communicating therewith as the cylinder is turned, and a suitable dischargepassage from the collecting-canal and also combined with a condensing-chamber,and a zinc-dust collector, substantially as described.k
