UMBRELLA ATTACHMENT FOR BICYCLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 380,059, dated March 27, 188. Application filed August 4, I887. Serial No. 246,161. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE SNowDEN, a resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Attachments for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.

The several features of my invention and the advantages arising from their use conjointly, or otherwise, will be apparent from the following description.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bicycle provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the rod supporting the umbrella. Fig. 3 illustrates the relation of the umbrella-rope to the supporting-pulley. Fig. 4 is a detailed View of the clamp holding the supporting-rod, part being shown in section. Fig. 5 illustrates the position of the clamp when the umbrella is not attached.

To each side of the yoke A of the bicycle one arm, B, of the rod-support is attached. Each arm B is hinged to a plate, b, which is firmly attached to the yoke A. The hinge b is set at a suitable angle, preferably of about ninety degrees, on the plate I), so that when the arm Bis swung backward it lies against the face of the yoke, as shown in Fig. 5. The outer end of each arm B is provided with a half-circle, which, with its fellow of the other arm B, forms the socket C, which is screwthreaded, and into which the rod D is screwed. To insure the proper adjustment of the parts of the socket C, one half is provided with a little pin, b", which is received into a corresponding socket in the other half. The bar B is provided with right and left hand screwthreads and is screwed into the arms B with the efi'ect of either separating them or of clamping them together. A screw, b, may also be used to assist in holding the arms B together.

The function of the arms B is to form asupport for the rod D, and while the form shown in the drawings is preferred, it is evident that other forms of support projecting in front of the bicycle will perform the same function. The rod D is preferably made in several sec- 5o tions telescoped together and provided with suitable clamp-screws for holding them in position. The top of the rod D is curved over the bicycle.

The umbrella E is hungby means of a cord, F, which extends from side to side of the um- 5 5 brella and passes once around the pulley G, which latter is suspended in the open'strap G',suspended from the rod D. Suitable staycords, f, are employed to steady the umbrella. The top of the umbrella is preferably provided 6c with the opening 6 for the escape of wind.

To give additional support to the rod D, rigid guy-rods H are,employed. These rods extendfrom the rod D to the guiding-bar ofthe bicycle. They are provided-with adjusting turn-buckles h. When the umbrella is removed, the arms B may be allowed to remain projecting in front of the bicycle, but are preferably dropped to the sides of the yoke.

The edge of the umbrella E is provided with the fringe J, each thread of which is weighted with a leaden pellet or other suitable weight,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with :a bicycle, a forwardly-projecting support, rod D, and um' brella suspended therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2'. In combination with a bicycle, arms B, attached to the yoke of the bicycle, rod D, and umbrella suspended therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. In combination with a bicycle, the arms B, hinged at an angle to the yoke A, and clamp for holding them together, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

4. In combination with a bicycle, the sup port B B, telescoped rod D, and umbrella E, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

5. In combination with a bicycle, the support B B, rod D, and umbrella E, provided with weighted fringe, substantially as and for the purposes specified. 9 5
