A. L.-AUGST SCHIERMYER, OF DAYKIN, NEBRASKA.
coRN-PtANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.379,989, datedMarch 27, 1888.
Application tiled December 30, 1837. Serial No. 259,408. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. L. AUGUST SCHIER- MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Daykin, in the county of Jei'erson and ing drawings, and pointed' outv in the claims hereto appended.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a planter embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on Referring t0 the drawings by letter, A des ignates the main frame of the machine, having the axle B journaled in the side rails thereof, and the wheels b b fixed upon and rotating the axle.
C is a tappet secured upon the axle at a convenient point, and provided with the three equidistant equal-'sized and similar arms c.
D is the seat, secured on itssupportdin' the central line of theV main frame and upon alongitudinal beam, b', thereof aligned with the tongue bwhich has its heel secured to and below the front end of said beam. p
E E are scraper-blades secured to the ends of the transverse shaft e, which is journaled in bearings e e', secured to the rear ends of the side rails of the main frame.
F is a lever pivoted to the beam b in convenient position to be pressed down by the foot of the driver, and f is a rod connecting the upper end of said lever to the end of an arm, f', standing up from the shaft e. By pressing down the said lever the driver can, by means of the rod f and arm f', bring the' edges of the scraper-'blades against the peripheries of the wheels to clean the latter.
G is the seed-frame, provided with the similar rearwardly-extending arms gg at equal distances on each side of lits center, which arms are provided. at their ends with bearings g g', through which passes the shaft H,
journaled in bearings h h 71, s,ecu red to the side rails of the main frame and to 'the heel of the tongue.
is'atransverse rail of the seed-frame G, and i isa metal loop rising therefrom and embracing the tongue, so as to limit the swing of t the seed-frame on the main frame.
J J are the seed-boxes, each made of a rect- -angularblanlg j, having the four outer trape- -zoidal portions, j', and the arms j, converging together from said portions, as shown in Fig.
Averging downwardly, and having secured tov its front edge the runner or furrow-opener K.
L is a shaft having its end portions .journaled in the sides of the dropping-tubes on .4.- Depending from the bottom of each seed-k .boxis a dropping-tube, K, with its edges coneach side, and having mounted upon it, within each of said tubes, a wheel, M, that fits'in and closes the open bottoni of the corresponding shaft at its end and straddling the ratchetwheel.
n is a springpawl attached to said arm and engaging the ratchet-wheel.
The
lower or outer end of the arm n is pivoted to the front end of the link-rod 0, the rear end of which is pivoted to the depending bifur-` cated armp ofthe angle -lever P,journaled through its angle on the shaft H, and with its the latter. When the said arm Pf is depressed y by the tappet-arm, the arm p is lifted, and, by means ofthe link-rod O, arm n, ratchet-wheel N, and spring-pawl n', the recessed wheels in the dropping-tubes are partly turned and a planting takes place.
` The Wheels M maybe arranged to plant simultaneously or alternately, as desired.
Q is a double-armed bent detent-lever, .piv-- The said spring is arranged to lift the rco oted -at its angle q on a bracket, R, secured to the front end of the beam b of the main frame, with its front arm, q', entering the loop i and its rear npwardlynclined arm, @Within easy reach of the foot of the driver. The said lever is capable of a slight amount of lateral motion on its pivotal point, and has one edge of its rear arm beveled to form a detent-edge, r, which is adapted to engage the vertical rack It', that is secured to the beam in front of the seatsupports b. By means of said double-armed lever and rack the driver can with his foot lift the seed-frame on the main frame to regulate the depth of planting.
The machine as described is of simple and strong construction, effective and certain in use, and can be operated readily and with ease.
Having described my invention, I claiml. The combination of the main frame, the axle, the tappet on the axle, the seed-frame, the shaft H, hinging said frame to the main frame, the shaft L, mounted in the seed-frame and carrying the planting-Wheels, the ratchet- Wheel on the shaft L, the angle-lever on the shaft H, engaged by the tappet, and the link connected to said angle-lever and carrying a pawl engaging the ratchet-wheel, as set forth.
2. In a planter, the combination, with the seed-boxes, droppingtubes, furrow-openers, shaft L,journaled upon the seedframe, planting-Wheels M, having the equidistant seed-recesses m, and the ratchet-wheel xed on said shaft, of the bifurcated arm N, turning loosely on the shaft L, the spring-pawl n', the pivoted 3 5 link-rod O, the double-armed angle-lever P, turning loosely on the shaft H, the coiled springp, and the three equidistant armed tappet on the axle, substantially as specified.
3. In a planter, the combination, with the 4o main frame, the shaft H, journa1ed in the side rails thereof, and the tongue, of the seed-frame having rearwardly-extending arms pivoted on said shaft, the loop ,secured to the seed-frame and extending over the tongue, and the double- 45 armed lever Q, pivoted upon a bracket secured to the main frame and with the end of its front arm engaging in the loop i, substantially as specified.
4. In a planter, the combination, with the 5o main frame, the shaft H, journaled in the side rails thereof, and the tongue, of the seed-frame having rearwardly-extending arms pivoted on said shaft, the loop z', secured to the seedframe and extending over the tongue, the 55 double-armed lever Q, pivoted on a bracket secured to the main frame andhaving the detent-edge 1, and the vertical rack R', secured to the main frame and engaged by the detentedge r of the lever Q, substantially as speci- 6o fied.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. L. AUGUST SCIIIERMEYER.
