W. H. RODDEN.
BARB FOR WIRE FENCING.
No. 379,729. Patented Mar. 20, 1888.
=WL'Z7Z6J w.- .[nveniorz W W x) UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
IVILLIAM HENRY RODDEN, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BARB FOR WIRE FENCING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,729, dated March 20, 1888.
Application filed April 22, 1837. Serial No. 235.813.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRY Roi)- DEN, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbs for \Vire Fencing, (on which I have obtained a patent in the Dominion of Canada, No. 26,588, dated the 4th of May, 1887;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a barb applicable to all kinds of wire fencing, and also to fencewires, whether of one or more strands.
My barb is formed of a piece of metal of, say, about three eighths of an inch in width, with ends parallel to each other and at a sharp angle to the sides.
I make it (by rolling or otherwise) with one side (that which comes next the wire strand or longitudinal) fiat and the other or outside face corrugated or waved, the ridges running lengthwise with the strip. To form the points -'l split the above blank at both ends in the 5 parts.
A is the barb-blank, of any desired length (No model.) Patented in Canada "May 4, 1887, N0.26,588.
and of the outline shown, a a and a a being the split ends.
B B are the longitudinal wires, upon one of which my barb is fixed by first placing its central part, a", diagonallyagainst the single wire, and then twisting, coiling, or winding it there upon until the four ends or points a a a. a projectin different directions, as seen in Fig. 3.
1 use a barb one side of which is, as shown in Fig. 2, made with a waved, ridged, or corrugated surface, A, as the flat side A will fit the longitudinal closely, while the other side, being convex, will give strength to the barb, besides insuring sharp points instead of the chisel-points, which are produced by severing a fiat blank in this way. By my invention the barbpoints assume their proper position during the act of coiling and do not re quire special adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, I beg to state that what I claim is as follows:
The combination. with a feucewire, of the four-pointed barb A, the same being formed from a blank rhomboidal in shape, flat upon one side and corrugated upon the other, and having a longitudinal incision, a", at each end in the thinnest portion of the metal, said barb having its central part coiled around the wire in such manner that the four points will project in different directions, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM HENRY RODDEN.
