Van Riet ABSTRACT A header unit adapted to form the uppermost portion of a shower stall entranceway comprising an elongated section of V shaped cross-section, stile receiving members attached to both ends thereof, knob-like members at the bottom interior of said stile receiving members and a shower curtain rail positioned lengthwise along the rear portion of said section.
8 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures INTEGRALLY MOLDED HEADER AND CURTAIN RAIL BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The construction of shower stall units of the freestanding variety has increased materially in recent years. The earliest of the commercially available showers of this type were prepared from metal and necessitated intricate attaching means for the various sections of the showers, i.e., walls, hand rails, headers, etc. In most instances, these attaching means were also of metal and, as a result, the showers were susceptible to corrosion, etc., at the attached surfaces or areas where any protective coatings on the metal were damaged or otherwise removed or disrupted.
More recently, shower stalls have been prepared from non-corrosive materials such as plastics, see US. Pat. No. 3,609,773. Even these plastic showers, however, rely basically upon metal fasteners to secure walls, sills, headers, etc., together and therefore, while relieving some of the corrosion problems, are still beset with corrosion problems of their own.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION We have now discovered a novel header unit which may be utilized as the uppermost portion of a shower stall entrance-way, and in its broadest application, may form the entire top framing section of a shower stall. The novel header of our invention is entirely free of metal and includes not only the rigidity imparting and supporting ability of metal headers but also a curtain rail portion adapted to receive shower curtain support means.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a broken front view of the left side of the header of the instant invention, the right side being identical thereto;
FIG. 2 is a view as seen from the plane indicated by line 2--2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 isa cross-sectional view as seen from the plane indicated by line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a side view of shower curtain support means which may be utilized in conjunction with the header unit of the present invention;
FIG. 5 is a view showing a preferred construction of the header unit as seen from the same plane indicated by line 2-2 of FIG. 1 wherein further supporting means are indicated and which is shown on a scale smaller than FIG. 1; and
FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view as seen from the plane indicated by line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION INCLUDING PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS FIG. 1 illustrates a header unit according to the present invention. The unit includes an elongated, middle section 1 of substantially V" shaped cross-section 2 (FIG. 2). The middle section has hollow, bullet-shaped, downwardly open, stile receiving members 3 at both ends thereof (one member not shown) each with slightly inwardly tapering sides or walls 4 and 5, (shown as angles, FIG. 1) terminating at bottom interior 6. A plurality of knob-like members 7 are positioned equidistant from the innermost tapered portions of said sides at said bottom interior 6 of the stile receiving members 3. The stile receiving members are adapted to receive the stile portion of the entrance-way (not shown) of the shower stall. The stiles are maintained in locked contact with the members by being of slightly larger width than the space between the walls 4 and 5 and the members 7 at the bottom interior 6. A shower curtain rail 8 runs lengthwise along the rear portion of middle section 1 and is adapted to detachably receive slideable shower curtain support means as more fully discussed below.
The header unit is one-piece and is of molded construction, the inside portion of the stile receiving members of which is best seen in FIG. 2. As can be seen, the member is of bullet-shaped appearance; The rear portion of side 4 extending beyond that of side 5 to form flap-like wings 9. The underside of rail 8 is shown extending beyond the interior vertical side 5 of the stile receiving member and terminating at stop 10. The wings 9 contain hole 11 for attaching the walls (not shown) of the shower stall thereto.
The wings 9 are more specifically shown in FIG. 3. As can be seen, they are of flap-like shape and are adapted to receive the outer walls of the shower stall, which walls may be attached thereto with available fastening means such as plastic screws through holes 1 1. The rail 8 is depicted as substantially circular in axial crosssection and is adapted to receive shower curtain support means. A typical shower curtain support means 12 is shown in FIG. 4. Portion 13 of the support means is of substantially the same inner configuration as rail 8 and is detachably received by the rail. Since the rail is of substantially the same cross sectioned shape as the area 14 formed by portion 13 of the support means, the means is free to slide easily along the rail in either direction before being halted by stop 10. Portion 15 of the support means 12 is adapted to receive a shower curtain thereon, the curtain being intermittently grometted across its upper edge as is the custom. Projection 16 of the support means protrudes outwardly to an extent such that it contacts the rear wall 17 (FIG. 3) of the middle section 1 and thereby prevents the shower curtain from moving in any direction but laterally across the rail.
FIG. 5 depicts an improved header unit which also falls within the scope of the present invention and which combines the features discussed above of our novel header with a framing member 18. The framing member is part of the one-piece header unit and is shaped like the letter U in its preferred configuration with the open or free ends of the U constituting replacements for wings9 of FIG. 3. In this modification the U shaped member preferably runs from the outside upper rear edge of side 4 of stile receiving member 3 to a similar position on the opposite stile receiving member. FIG. 5 is of smaller scale than FIG. 2 and shows both stile receiving members from the same plane indicated by line 2-2 of FIG. 1. Framing member 18is of substantially a clothespinlike cross-section, best shown in FIG. 6. The member is composed of a body portion 19 and two legs 20 and 21, the space between said legs forming an opening adapted to receive the wall portions (not shown) of the shower stall. The framing member 18 of FIG. 5 is shown as substantially square but may be rectangular in shape if desired. The ultimate shower stall will, of course, conform in shape to the shape of the framing member which rigidifies the shower stall and holds the shape thereof consistent.
- known to be moldable and have such properties so as to provide rigid, impact resistant molded products is applicable. A preferred construction material which may be used is that generally known as pre-mix compression molding compound, gunk-molding compounds," bulk-molding compound, etc., and which is composed of an unsaturated polyester resin, various fillers such as clay, calcium carbonate, etc., fibers such as fiberglass, nylon, asbestos, etc., pigments and a cross-linking agent such as styrene. The composition is a putty-like material which is formed into the molded header by adding catalyst thereto and compression molding the resultant mixture in a molding press with downwardly or upwardly acting matched metal dies. When the header unit represented by FIG. 5 is prepared, it may be constructed of the same material but must be injection molded.
Although our invention has been described above with some degree of particularity and generally in its preferred forms, it is to be understood that said preferred forms have been presented by way of illustration only and that many modifications of both the construction and arrangement of parts thereof may be made 1 without departing from the scope of the instant invention.
