IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR FOLDING THE PLAITS IN SHIRT-BOSOMS.

Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 37.952. dated March 24, 1863.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. CHAND- LER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in machines for folding shirt-bosonis, preparatory to their being stitched; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, and letters ot' reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in providing a board with tixtures thereon for the purpose ot' holding the metal plates in their position where placed during the operation ot' folding', the whole forming a convenient ar rangement by which shirt'bosonis ot' any desired width may be folded with ease, precision, and rapidity.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its consti uetion and operation.

I provide a board of suitable material and dimensions and on one side place what I terni a Lstop'barj A. (See drawing, Figure I.) On one end of the board, and at a right angle to stop A, I fasten what I terni a catchst0p,B, (see drawing, Fig. 1,) which is beveled on the under inner' side for the purpose of admitting;q under it and holding to the board and in their places one end of the folding'- plates. I provide a spring-clutch bar, C, which is pivoted in such a manner at l that the opposite end, h, is held firmly to the board in whatever position it is required to be placed. It may be fastened rmly to the board parallel to catch-stop B, and raised slightly above the board, but it will not answer its purpose so well. I provide, also, plates of metal, D D D, (see drawings, Fig.

1,) of various widths and sniable thickness, around which the material is folded, the width of the plates determining the widths of the folds. The object of the catch-stop B and sprin g; clutch bar C is to hold the plates firmly wherever placed in the operation of folding. The bars A, B, and C may be either of metal or wood.

The manner of using' the machine is as follows--to wit: Takeaplate of proper width for the tirst fold, and around it wrap tightly the material used, as indicated in the drawings. (See Fig. 2, f). Then place it with the fold on the upper side upon the board beside stop A with the end of the plate pushed closely under stopAcatch B, and place the end of the springelutch upon it, and it will be held firmly in its position. Place a second plate on the cloth beside the first plate and turn the cloth ovtr it. Then place a third one directly upon it with one end under the catch-stop. Fold the cloth back and place the clutch-bar upon it, and proceed to forni additional folds in the same manner. NVhen finished, the clutch is turned back and the plates withdrawn.

I claime The combination of the stop-catch B and spring-bar C, or either of them, with the plates andboard, when arranged and constructed in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
