JAMES C. WAKEFIELD, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY POCKET-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,347, dated March 13, 1888.
Application filed August 19,1887. Serial No. 247,395. No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J Arms 0. WAKEFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new, original, and useful Safety Pocket-Spring, an appliance for the closing of a watch or other kind of pocket and holding the same closed, of which the following is aspecification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
The invention consists in an appliance for the closing of a watch or other kind of pocket having a straight aperture at the top and holding the same closed, and which also allows the pocket to be easily opened by the wearer, but renders it extremely di'ificult for a watch or other article to be pulled or snatched therefrom, and thus affords protection against thieves, as well as being a protection against the watch, money, or other articles contained therein being thrown out and lost or injured by accident. It also keeps the pocket tightly closed, and thus prevents the entry and accumulation of dust and other substances, and thus forms a protection to the watch, money, or other articles contained therein against in' jury from these sources. 1
The appliance is constructed as follows: Three pieces of spring-tempered steel are jointed together,as shown in Figure 1,by thejoints b b and d, the side a a being a curved spring and holding when at rest the two arms 0 c, which form the other side.
Fig. 1 shows the appliance with the spring at rest and open. Fig. 2 shows the appliance closed. This is accomplished by pressing the two sides a a and c 0 together, the spring a a thereby straightening and the arms 0 0 forming the other side, drawing in almost parallel to the spring ad by meansof the joint d,which, however, passes just by and within a point, which would be equidistant from the centerof thejoints b 6 upon a straight line drawn be tween those points or centers, and thus holds the spring a a in tension, as shown in Fig. 2, until released by sufficient pressure from the inside, which opens it again, as shown in Fig. l.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the curved spring a a with the arms 0 0,in connection with the joints 1) b and d, capable of being shut and holding shut and being opened, as and for the purpose above described.
JAMES C. \VAKEFIELD.
