IMPROVEMENT IN PREPARING A PAINT-OIL FROM THE PETROLEUM RESIDUUM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,918, dated March 17, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPII MILLOGHAN, of the city and State of New York, have invented and madeacertain new and Improved Method of Preparing Petroleum or Goal Oils for Use in Mixing Paints, &c.'; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, and of the mode of preparing said coal-oil.
Benzine and coal oils have heretofore been used as a substitute for turpentine in mixing paints; but such coal-oil and the products of the distillation of such oil have not sufficient body to be used for grinding with paints and colors.
In the refining of petroleum and coil oils, acid has heretofore been employed to cause a separation and precipitation of the resinous matters contained in such oil, and this residuum has been of but little value, and is sometimes thrown away. Sulphuric acid is employed to produce this pre ipitation from distilled petroleum.
The nature of my said invention consists in the process of treating this residuum in order to convert it into an oil that possesses a consistence and body adapted for use in the grind ing and mixing of paints and colors.
To effect this treatment of said residuum, I first mix therewith about forty per cent. of water, and thoroughly agitate the same in orderto remove as much of the acid in said residuum as possible. I then allow the liquid to settle, and draw off the watery portion containing acid and impurities, and I prefer to transfer the oily portion into a separate vessel. I then mix with this oily or resinous material about twenty per cent. of lye of caustic soda or potash, of a gravity of 25 Baum, and shake or agitate the mass thoroughly for about an hour, the operation of which is to effectually neutralize and remove any traces of the acid employed in the refining of the coal-oil.
When the liquids settle and separate the oil is in a condition for barreling, and when eniiloycd in mixing paints, colors, &c., it will be found to possess a consistence and body that adapts it to use in such paints as a substitute for linseed and other oils heretofore employed. The said oil will dry and leave a body something resembling varnish.
The watery matter containing acid and impurities, separated by the first operation, may be usefully employed in the manufacture of superphosphate of lime.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The process, substantially as herein specified, of manufacturing oil adapted to mixing with paints and colors, from the acid residuum in the refining of petroleum or coal oils, as set forth.
