Abstract

A protective mattress having an upper face comprising three thickened portions, which define therebetween three divergent channels which intersect, and an orifice at said insection whereby the body of a baby or ill adult may be disposed with the legs in two of said channels and the trunk in a third thereby to orient the body so that body wastes are discharged into said orifice without soiling the mattress user. The mattress may be complete or intended for support by a lower mattress.

9 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures The present invention has for an object a mattress for protecting the newborn, young children or bed-ridden adults of either sex, from their excrements, either urine or stools. This invention is characterized by a comfortable mattress of conventional materials and locally waterproofed, having on its surface novel guiding pads and cavities specially designed to maintain the appropriate part of the body above the orifice of a removable receptacle set in a cavity in the thickness of the mattress.

It is already known there are systems having for their object the excrements of bed-ridden people, but the systems available today do not adequately meet the requirements and their cost is very high.

The present invention has then for an object to overcome these deficiencies. It provides in this regard a mattress for protecting the new-born, young children or bed-ridden adults, regardless of sex, from all their excrements, either stools or urines. The mattress is 1 characterized by an assembly including localareas of extra thicknesses and declivities having as their purposes on the one hand to maintain the body of any bedridden person in a position favoring the evacuation of excrements in a collector with risk-of soiling, or of any consequence therefrom, such as, for example, gluteal erythema, and also to allow normal growth of the newborns body by providing for a favorable position.

According to another characteristic of the invention, said mattress comprises on one hand a median extra thickness which is located near the receptacles orifice, and on the other still proceeding from bottom to top, that is, near the orifice and on each side ofit a lateral extra thickness, and finally a part advantageously forming an inclined plane at the mattress head.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the mattress also is provided with three channels preferably slightly inclined towards the receptacles orifice, there being on one hand two lateral channels passing between the extra thicknesses and on the other one central channel.

According to another characteristic of the invention, there may be a variation consisting of a removable element fitting with the mattress and according to the invention consisting on one hand of lateral extra thick nesses on each side of the orifice leading to the receptacle and advantageously forming an acute angle, and on the other of a median extra thickness near the orifice which may be provided with an extension leading to the orifice with the particular purpose to avoid soiling the top sheet.

Other characteristics and methods of execution will be found in the description below and in the attached drawings, in which FIG. 1 is a top view of the mattress showing the characteristics described;

FIG. 2 is a view in section taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a view of a variation of the invention in the form of a removable element which may be adapted to the mattress; and

FIG. 4 is a view in section taken on the line 4--4 of FIG. 3.

According to the invention, the mattress isolating the new-born, young children or bed-ridden adults from their excrements is made up of Lateral extra thicknesses 1,2, said extra thicknesses advantageously forming an acute angle starting from the orifice of a receptacle 5.

A median extra thickness 3 near said orifice which may be provided with an extension to shield the orifice.

A central channel 8 is provided preferably slightly sloping toward the orifice so as to achieve good drainage, said channel being located between the lateral extra thicknesses.

Two lateral channels 6,7 are provided. These are located between each of the lateral extra thicknesses and the median one, again slightly sloping towards the orifice.

A sloped part 4 forming a head-rest for the mattress so that the bed-riddens body remains well positioned.

In the FIG. 3 arrangement, there are also three thickened

portions

1, 2 and 3 as well as anorifice 5. Since this device is intended to be used on top of another support such as a mattress, there is no head-rest 4, but the thickened portion 3 is provided with a shield 9. A central channel 8 is provided between thickened portions 1 and 2 and there are channels for the legs at 10 and 1 1.

The FIG. 3 arrangement may be placed on another mattress one face of which is flat and the other face of which is recessed to receive a receptor.

Although the mattress of FIG. 1 is of an area suitable to a complete bed and the mattress of FIG. 3 is of lesser area and intruded to lie upon another mattress or support, the term mattress as used in the annexed claims is intended to cover both forms.

A further object of the arrangement is to allow proper propping up of the individual and to keep the appropriate body part above the orifice; to that end, the central channel and the lateral extra thicknesses comfortably maintain the individuals body, while the lateral channels located between the lateral extra thicknesses and the median extra thickness favor passage and maintaining leg position.

Finally the described system allows multifold positions.

It is self-evident diverse modifications may be introduced in the described and shown modes of realization without for that departing from the scope of the invention.

What is claimed is:

l. 2. The protective mattress of claim 1 in which the lower face of the said element is perfectly plane with a short conduit at the exit of the orifice toward a collector to register within said collector.

The protective mattress of claim 1 further characterized in that two of the thickened portions are disposed so that they lie on opposite sides of the longitudinal centerline of the mattress, said portions being of variable profile, sloping toward the central channel defined between them, sloping upwardly slightly toward the head of the mattress and sloping sharply toward the other two channels, projections of the lines of the edges fice, one of said thickened portions being in the centerline of the mattress and having a curved portion partially shielding the orifice.

7. A mattress as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said channels is along the centerline of the mattress and slopes toward said orifice.

8. A mattress as claimed in claim 1 in which upper face at the head of the mattress is higher than at the orifice to favor the good positioning of the user.

9. A mattress as claimed in claim 1 further comprising an under support having a flat face and a face recessed to receive a receptor.

Claims

1. A protective mattress having an upper face comprising three thickened portions, which define therebetween three divergent channels which intersect, and an orifice at said insection whereby the body of a baby or ill adult may be disposed with the legs in two of said channels and the trunk in a third thereby to orient the body so that body wastes are discharged into said orifice without soiling the mattress user.

The protective mattress of claim 1 further characterized in that two of the thickened portions are disposed so that they lie on opposite sides of the longitudinal centerline of the mattress, said portions being of variable profile, sloping toward the central channel defined between them, sloping upwardly slightly toward the head of the mattress and sloping sharply toward the other two channels, projections of the lines of the edges of said two thickened portions which face the centerline defining an acute angle.

4. A protective mattress as claimed in claim 3 in which the third thickened portion is equally divided by the longitudinal centerline of the mattress, its apex being adjacent the orifice.

5. A protective mattress according to claim 4 further comprising a deflector having padding on each edge, said deflector being part of said third thickened portion.

6. A protective mattress according to claim 1 further comprising a removable receptor located toward the lower face of the mattress and in registry with saId orifice, one of said thickened portions being in the centerline of the mattress and having a curved portion partially shielding the orifice.
