UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ADDISON SMITH, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
CONSTRUCTHON OF BUELDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,627, dated February 28, 1888. Application filed Juno 3, 1887. Serial No. 240.139. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Buildings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of buildings on the line of a diagonal street; and the object of the invention is to devise such construction of the front of each building that one will not interfere with the view of the other, and such that the front entrance will be at right angles to the side walls, and such as will afford the most advantageous show-window space.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a sectional plan view of three buildings, showing the fronts constructed in accordance with my invention.
A A A represent the parallel side walls of buildings fronting upon a diagonal street, B, which intersects a side street, 0, at an obtuse angle. Parallel with each wall A is a side window,D,which reaches to the building-line, and from the windows D are built the diagonal front windows, E, on the front buildingline. The window E reaches nearly to the door-entrance F of each building, and between the inner edge of each and the door-entrance is built a window, G, which is slightly diagonal to the center line of the building. At the left of the doorway F is built the converging window H, which joins at an obtuse angle the window J, which is set somewhat back of the front building-line and is parailel with the doorway F. The wall A of the second building is stopped short of the front building-line at the edge of the window J. The space from this window to the front building-line is occupied by the side window, D, parallel with the wall A. The windows E, G, H, and J and doorway F of the second and of subsequent buildings in the same row are the same as in the first or corner building and need not be further described.
By constructing the fronts as shown and described it will be seen that the buildings in no manner interfere with each other in street advantages and light, as each side window, D, fronts practically upon the street.
It will also be seen that the doorways F are in the center of the building and at right angles to its wall, but diagonal to the line of the street, and this construction gives space for the diagonal windows G H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A building formed with the side Window, D, in extension of one of the side walls, and the front window, E, set diagonal to the window D, the remainder of the front of the building and the doorway being set in from the front diagonal building line, substantially as described.
2. The side window, D, set in line with the side wall, the front window, E, set diagonal to the window D, the diagonal windows G H,and the window J and doorway F, at right angles to the walls, substantially as described.
3. The window J, built at right angles to the wall A and set in from the front building, in combination with the diagonal windows H G,
vdiagonal window E, and side window, D, substantially as described.
