. Be it known that I, LOUIS JANSON, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvenieutin Gage Attach ments for Oane-Shaving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to the devices by which the knifedisks used on cane-shaving machines for gaging and trimming the canestrips are adjusted circularly to present a new edge to the work and laterally to gage the width of the strips.
The object of my improvement is to provide a gage attachment for cane-shaving machines whereby greater convenience, accuracy, and security in the adjustment of the knife-disks are obtained than is ordinarily possible.
I will first describe in detail a gage attachment embodying my improvement, and then point out the various features of the said improvement in claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application to a cane-shaving machine of a gage attachment embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the said attachment detached from the machine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, parts being removed to reveal the construction. 13 designates the improved gage attachment, which is arranged in the ordinary way to bring the knife-disksG in thepath of the canestrip carried on the periphery of the revolving disk A; and B designates the bolts by which the frame B of the attachment is secured to the main frame of the machine.
The face of the frame 13" is beveled on opposite sides to a right angle, and in such beveled Serial No. 235,826. (No model.)
sides are formed transverse dovetail guide grooves B, meeting at the angle, and in. which are mounted to slide dovetail ribs D, formed on the inner faces of the carriers D. The carriers D, which are thus mounted to move in the horizontal plane toward and from each other, support the two knife-disks O, which are'set and move at an angle of ninety degrees to each other, and have their inner edges beveled, so as to present parallel cutting-faces to the work.
The dovetail rib D of each carrier D is formed lengthwise with an in ternally-threadcd socket, D and in it works the threaded thumbscrew E, which is formed on its outer part with an annular groove, E, engaged byaslotted plate, E", screwed to the corresponding rear beveled face of the frame 13 as shown clearly in Fig. 6. The thumbscrews E are thus held from lengthwise movement, while they are allowed to turn, so that by operating the same the carriers D, and with them the knife-disks C, may be adjusted toward and from each other for variously gaging the width of the cane-strips. A screw, D, passed th rough a horizontal slot, D in each carrier and screw ing in the frame 13 is loosened when the carrier is to be adjusted, and tightened to clamp the carrier in place when so adjusted.
In a circular recess, F, formed in the front beveled face of an enlargement on the lower part of each carrier D, is mounted to turn a spur wheel, G, having two studs, G, projecting from its face,which are secured in apertures in the corresponding knife-disk, C, so that the disk rotates with the spun-wheel. Au outwardly-concave collar-spring, H, is held in the recess and bears against the back of the spur-wheel, and a screwstud, I, having an enlarged head, is passed through apertures in the knifedisk, spur-wheel, and collar-spring H and screwed into the back of the recess. The headed screw-stud thus acts as a bearing for the spur-wheel and knife-disk, and, compressing them against the concave spring,pre-
vents them from being turned or displaced by any jar or concussion.
Each spur-wheel is engaged and turned by the teeth of a rack-bar, K, the lower toothed end of which is guided in its vertical movement in a groove, K, formed in the front bevelcd face of the movable carrier D and in the downwardly -projecting extension D of the same.
The groove K and the part of the rack in each extension D are covered by a plate, K permanently secured to the same. A removable plate, K", secured by a screw, K, and a stud, K entering an aperture therein, and cut away at its front upper corner to accommodate the set-screw D, covers the upper grooved portion of each carrier D and the rack therein.
The upper ends of both rack-bars K extend through vertical slots L in and are connected to a vertically movable block, L, by set screws L", passed loosely through transverse slots L in the block and screwed into the rackbars.
A hand-nut, M, is mounted to turn freelyin the block L, but is held from longitudinal movement therein by a plate, M screwed to the top of the block and engaging an annular shoulder, M, on the nut.
The hand-nut M works on a vertical screwbar, N, attached at its lower end to the top of the fixed frame 13 of the attachment, so that by screwing the nut M up or down the block L is adjusted vertically and the rack-bars K move therewith to equally and simultaneously turn the spur-wheels G and attached knifedisks 0, as desired.
A bar, P, fixed to and projecting downward from the block L, slides in a keeper, B, on the rear upper part of the fixed frame B and thus keeps the block Lfrom turning and guides its vertical movement.
The slotted connection of the upper ends of the rack-bars K with the block L permits said bars to move bodily with the carriers D when the same are moved in adjusting the knifebars are connected, and means for adjusting said block to move both rack-bars simultaneously lengthwise, substantially as described.
2. In a gage attachment for cane-shaving machines, the combination of a knife-disk, a
gear for turning the same, a rack'bar engaging the gear, a screw-bar, a nut working thereon, and a connecting device, through which the rack-bar is moved lengthwise by the play of the nut on the screw-bar, substantially as de- .scribed.
5. In a gage attachment for cane-shaving machines, the combination of aknife-disk carrier, a headed stud screwed therein, a knifedisk and its turning-gear mounted to turn freely on the said stud, and a stiffening-spring interposed between the carrier and the gear of the knife-disk, substantially as described.
6. In a gage attachment for eaneshaving machines, the combination of a frame having forward converging vertical sides, in which are formed transverse dovetail grooves, sliding knife-disk carriers having dovetail ribs adapted to said grooves and threaded sockets formed lengthwise of and in the ribs, adj usting-serews working in the threaded sockets, and bearings fixed on the frame, in which the adjustingscrews are mounted to turn, substantially as described.
